      Give us a single sentence definition of Democracy and Republic. No catch phrases or jokes just the straight definition that covers every use of the words.
      You are right that the USA is a Republic...but to criticize others we must know if you know what you're talking about about.

    • @thewisecracker-rq1pu
      @thewisecracker-rq1pu 18 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +6

      @@STho205 A republic is a form of government where the power rests with elected representatives and an elected leader, while democracy generally refers to a system where the majority rules, often through direct or representative voting. In a republic, there are constitutional protections for individual rights that prevent the majority from overriding them.

    • @garyweston3269
      @garyweston3269 18 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

    • @STho205
      @STho205 18 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@thewisecracker-rq1pu that is correct. But drop the last sentence as that is just POV rhetoric. Your two simple sentences are good objective definitions.
      Republics don't necessarily protect individuals or the state from individuals. China is a Republic. The USSR was a Republic...but then again so is the USA.
      The structure of the governments were similar but the methodology was different in practice.
      For instance the Electoral College doesn't protect the state from individuals...it simply forces the Republic to elect a president through the states....but the modern EC can't decide NOT to follow the democratic majority inside their states.

Throughout 2024, I'd say whenever the subject came up that with voting as increasingly digitized as it is, there's no such thing as "too big to rig," and that whatever rigging needed to be done by dems in PA, WI, and/or MI would be. On Nov. 5th, Tobtor proved me wrong.
      And I'm not unhappy about it.

      Oh stop this shit. Democrats say we live in a Democracy, Republicans say we live in a Republic.
      We live in a Democratic Constitutional Republic. Literally have all the main aspects of both for checks and balances as a Democracy prevents the worst aspects of a Republic (A patriarchal theocracy) and a Republic prevents the worst aspect of a Democracy (mob rule). Its in how many founding fathers fucking letters and diaries? 20+ of them...
      They knew a PURE Democracy was bad and caused the downfall of every nation that used it and they knew a PURE Republic was bad because it ALWAYS led to an eventual tyrannical rule by the elite. So we have what we have. We DEMOCRATICALLY elect Representatives to serve in the government to be our voice and pass the laws. Term limits and needing the vote prevents families from becoming a dynasty via gaining power over generations and laws to lock it all into place.

      @AstroTheFungus you might want to read what you just wrote again. I started teaching civics and the constitution to the boy scouts of America about thirty years ago. The constitution is the founding law of the land. Everything else stems from it, and needs to not violate that core "law of the land" which it is. A law in the USA is invalid, null and void, if it violates it.

    • @AstroTheFungus
      @AstroTheFungus 12 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@garyweston3269 yes, that’s true, but what I’m saying is that not everything we hold as common sense now is written explicitly in the constitution. Is the right to privacy ever specified? No, but we derive a specific conclusion from the general wording of the constitution. Even if nowhere in the constitution is the word “democracy” written, the fact that the very same constitution establishes the right to vote and the separation of power, two crucial components of any democracy, is enough for us to understand that the US can be labeled as a representative democracy. It fits the criteria, so therefore it is one, even if nowhere is it clearly stated.

    It's sad that Americans are so un-educated that they do not know that America is a Constitutional Republic. This idea was clearly stated in Aristotle's "Politics" that Democracy ONLY leads to tyranny and oligarchy. What are they teaching in college's? It's not correct history or how our government is setup. I here a lot of people throw these words around, but the more they talk, it's obvious they have know idea what the words mean or the implications of them in real life.
    We need our whole educational system changed back to teaching students real subjects that prepare them for real life.......

      You are of course technically correct. But our government is founded on and works on Democratic principles. Meaning fairness such as "liberty and justice for all". Most people think of democracy in this way. Not just that "the majority rules" which is a flaw of a pure democracy. Fortunately, our founding fathers recognized this fact and created our constitution and national government accordingly. Not much point in continuing to beat the "Constitutional Republic" drum.
