Sir: Thank you for your videos!! My car was showing flat power after 3k rpm. I tought, this must be the Turbo, but since the turbo kicks in until 3k rpm, then it must be something that might be expensive: injectors for example. Then I stumbled on your videos. So I took it upon myself to do some troubleshooting. I got a fancy toolbox on the internet, and started with the oil and filter change thanks to one of your videos. Then i changed the fuel filter and applied carefully all the steps highlighted in the part 2 video. Then i gathered my energy and started going through the vacuums and hoses, MAF...Nothing suspicious. So i removed the EGR, it was dirty, but not too much. I cleaned it, and made sure the valve stem was moving back and forth when i pressed it with my hand. Then i connected the egr again (battery was disconnected through the whole process). Took the car for a drive, it was lacking power just like before, but I insisted on driving it on high rpms for 10 or 20 miles, until i felt the power again. It was a smooth acceleration until 3k rpm, and then more power unlike before. Glad it was not injectors, the turbo or the lift pump, the expense wouldve been real worse. Now the car is running great, but my back is hurting after some bending :D
    P.S: Car is a Mondeo mk3 TDCI 2.2
Thanks again sir, you helped me so much in saving a few bucks, but also in having some peace of mind now.

Martin, when you change the fuel filter the new one will come with three plastic covers over each of the holes. Take them off and fill (I used a kitchen measuring jug) via the fuel in hole to the top. When you think its full give the filter a gentle shake and the air will come out. when the fuel is at the top of all three holes put the plastic caps back on and secure in the car. This minimises fuel spillage onto the alternator below. You can then take off the plastic caps as you clip back on the fuel hoses. Finally, before reconnecting the pipe that supplies the fuel pump, lift it up and fill this with diesel as well. Put your finger over the end as you lower it back down to connect to the filter. This should mean a much reduced chance of an air leak, which is a nightmare to clear on these models (just getting the T-shirt printed now)!

Loads of good advice Martin coming thru...
In defense of the Mondeo...Martin's has done 150000 miles...he picked it up cheap....who knows what maintenance has been done over the years?
The EGR bypass or blanking is not a MOT failure....you can't physically see a difference on most that are done.
Injector's are not a problem on Martin's car as his is the earlier TDDI (Direct Injection) engine, as opposed to the later TDCI ( Common Rail).
The TDDI has a much better rep for reliability than the early TDCI's....which have a reputation for having lots of Injector problems.
Bar that.....the only other major issue is the Dual mass Flywheel, which distintergrates and usually has to be changed along with the clutch.
Otherwise....a very good car, drive and handling often cited as best in its class.
    A great used buy.

Great video Martin. I have been reading up on this fault and lots of people have pointed to the fuel filter. Them being of poor quality or air bubbles forming due to blockages from never being changed. They also recommend inspecting the MAF sensor , making sure the thin wire inside isn't broken or dirty. Hope you get it sorted Martin and will continue to watch see how you go on.
    Cheers, Jeff.

just unplug the MAF and see if it drives betters, if its over fuelling i would say thats because it does not know how much air is being drawn in threw the into so its over fuelling to save the engine from damage

Hi Martin, it could be the lift pump that is playing up, next time your having problems give the lift pump a good tap in the rear wheel arch, plus get the fuel filter changed and get a good injector cleaner in the tank. It's worth marking the fuel lines if you change the filter so they don't get mixed up.

    • @retrorestore

Been there got the T Shirt Martin as regard diesels....
I currently have a Rover 75 diesel...BMW engine... have changed both aux fuel pumps, one in tank and one in engine bay.
Bosch made with a 50kish life cycle.
The BMW engine was... I'm told..was the first common rail derv engine...and its very good with a strong Rep.
Fitted a bypass on advice from the diesel gurus Martin... car runs better, and slightly better mpg as well...so definitely consider it.

Mass Air Sensor can be cleaned with Carb Cleaner (you know all this...am sure..) unless totally fooked....

Great vid mate your right it could be many things my first thought was collapsed pipe causing air restriction to charge pressure system maf sensor reading to ecu good but map sensor reading under boost (due to air restriction) and ecu adding more
fuel per injection cycle = more black smoke. But with the kangarooing it could also suggest fuelling problem. Not all engine fault codes will set a warning light on dash and most of the time you have to monitor the live data from the ecu to find the
problem .looking forward to part 2

I've changed quite a few Mass Sensors with broken rotted out connections. Salvage Yards $10. Usually fixed the problem. But in your case, I suspect that hose restricts airflow and results in a rich fuel condition, is why the smoke and misfire. Great trouble shooting video.

The dreaded mondeo strikes again lol brilliant cars when they run but pain in the backside when they don't. I've seen similar symptoms of what your having Martin. Cut open your old fuel filter and see if there's iron fillings inside. Think you use a magnet to see the iron fillings. If you find any it means fuel pump Also other thing to check with these motors is injectors. You'll have to do a test by connecting 4 clear bottles to the injectors and see if the bottle/bottles fill up rapid. If it ain't those then you are missing a dust cap lol it's usually the tdci models that have the problems more. Good luck and you'll sort it

Hello, thank you for the video. I have a Mondeo MK3 TDCI 2005 with power loss and a lot of smoke. The coils symbol is blinking. I took off the EGR and cleaned it. My question is now, if I schould be able to move the piston in the EGR with my finger or a tool. How strong is the spring inside? I can tell that I can not move it just a millimeter, so maybe the EGR is broken and has to be changed? :-) Thanks for good videoes.

EGR is a really crap system... despite having an extra tank and pump on the car, SCR is a much better way of dealing with emissions at the end of the cycle rather than a half-arsed attempt trying to do it part way through, interrupting the flow and introducing hot, part-burnt gasses into a process that loves a clean, cooled and condensed charge to get the best power available for every power stroke... not to mention all the crap that gets thrown back through the inlet manifold and clogging it up. I have just finished stripping a mk3 Mondeo TDCi and the plastic manifold is full of gunk (as are the inlet ports) and the EGR valve is going be dispensed with on my new Mondy `54 Diesel Estate Auto...

  • @robtaylor4462
    @robtaylor4462 7 ปีที่แล้ว

I ad this with a laguna 2 1.9dci ran ok but lacked power and started smoking. I was horrified that the manifold was caked within a mm of its life. took the lot off, cleaned egr, mass air pipes manifold the lot. ran sweet after, and changed oil too after all crap going in engine. after that every service I removed egr and cleaned it. felt like it was 120bhp after and consumption was miles better.

    • @jaggass

that pipe crimping wont help. if you have never done the fuel filter, then that wont arm anything. think they are a pig to bleed as I did one on a focus with that engine. I normally get some fuel in a tub, fit filter and use a 12v pump like lidl currently have for 12.99 to fill it as much as possible. I hope it turns out to be something simple! you don't have much luck with them Mondeos.

Might be as simple as something like a knackered body to engine earth. If your getting a crap earth the sensors on the car will be jumping and jolting around and giving the ecu dodgy readings. I think you can rule out the turbo, intercooler and pipework as normally for jolting like that the hose would of had to of blown off and you would hear the loud hissing. My money would be on a dodgy earth or a knackered MAF sensor

    • @retrorestore

We tend to look back at older (or "old") cars with rose tinted glasses. Yes, they were often easier to work on and it was easier to diagnose problems, but it definitely doesn't mean they were any more reliable.

      @retrorestore  7 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree but there's s much technology on today's vehicles and it's usually the sensors that fail and not the part they are monitoring. Also these sensors are way overpriced and can't be serviced unless you have the correct diagnostic equipment and that costs thousands.

It would take too long and too much text for me to explain and answer this properly (I'd probably do a TH-cam video on it if I pulled my finger out!)
Both old and new cars have good and bad points. On the whole, modern cars are better built, comfier, and are more reliable, require less maintenance and less "tinkering" - it's rare these days to even see someone out washing their car on a Sunday, let alone have their head stuck under the bonnet (mainly because they don't have to).
You can test many different sensors with an oscilloscope such as the Hantek units that are on eBay for less than £50, and they plug into a laptop. Eric O (South Main Auto) and Ivan (MotoYam82) use 'scopes to diagnose many different problems - yes they do use equipment by Snap-On, etc., but the principles are the same.

I understand all that but it's about finding the balance but everything is out of balance where style and the technology outweigh the practical use of vehicles to the extent where cars like this Mondeo would have been scrapped a long time ago as it would be uneconomical to repair even though it's a perfectly good vehicle

There was a limited edition of the Acclaim which had a turbocharger (the Avon Turbo). I've only ever seen one of these cars.
