    To any Monster Hunter World players out there, don't be put off by the MHGU footage. All the concepts put forth here apply 100% to World as well. Sure the models are higher-poly and the weapons are less stiff across the board. But learning the forethought required to apply a Greatsword or Hammer will serve you just as well in the New World.

      @Nitrox-. 4 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      I agree on this statement but sadly it also is a very effective tactic to just charge and slide down a hill for the aerial attack of the hammer when available - this kind of ruined hammer in MHW for me as I loved the anticipating that I had worked to master previously and then the best attack becomes something you need absolutely no brain for.

    • @norsehorse84

      @@Nitrox-. Sure, it's not like the spin move has a crapton of startup so you still are playing preemptively like Hammer does. It's also not like it requires understanding distance, spacing, and using the elevation to dodge attacks either.
      Nope. Absolutely NO skill required.

    • @Nitrox-.
      @Nitrox-. 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@norsehorse84 Salt, nice - this is obviously exaggerated. It just completely changed the dynamic - instead of effectively using the old methods you should pretty much always search for slide options and thats just boring to me as it is too centered around one move. Also you had to play around the startup of the charge before, it just took longer because movement couldn't be enhanced by sliding (and imo it was not as straight forward to set up).

      @@Nitrox-. Sure but isn't this why a couple of people in the community disliked the things they added in MHW though? It's all too different from what they have picked up before resulting in them being dissapointed in the game. Which btw alot of the old style of predicting monster movement is still there, hell I even use the Brutal Big Bang Clutch Claw combo way more than the slide.

Just a couple of Life Powders and I helped them figure out where they messed up and how to not make the same mistake as much. They usually just got a tad too greedy with a combo. Now they are usually the most reliable people for me to hunt with because they learned from those mistakes instead of keeping bad habits.

      ChironTheCuddley That only really works with a set group, though. When you’re playing with random late-game players, you assume they know how to function already. And yet, there’s often that one overly confident hunter who was clearly carried by someone and has no idea how to put out their own ass when it’s on fire. I don’t have literal days to teach the fricker how to not die - all I can do is keep them from carting us into a fail.

    I tried starting GS in MH4U my first MH back in the day, put 80 hrs in, couldn't get past Gore Magala in Low rank. I wasn't into the whole hit and run thing, tried SnS, LS, DB. Found out after trying all those weapons, I wanted GS reach and dmg but with SnS combos, and finally changed to Charge Blade and it fit me like a glove. Got through Gore and Shagaru was a breeze by comparison.
    The fighting game analogy makes sense to me since I play a lot of those. I equate GS to Zangief slow, patient, rewards capitalizing on mistakes for big dmg, but sometimes some playstyles just aren't for you though i.e. the SF2 Zangief vs Guile matchup is a test of patience. If you love the playstyle then you'll be fine, if you don't you'll tilt. Gore was my GS wake up call.
    I like characters with tools for everything, even if their health or damage is subpar. For new FG players most people recommend easy characters so they can learn the system. Sometimes you have to try the whole roster and see what you're comfortable with.

      My early experience with MH4U was similar. I started with S&S (mobility and fast item usage) then somewhere around Najarala fell in love with Charge Blade on first sight. Despite this, Gore Magala was absolutely my "wall" to break through (many ragequits occurred), but once Gore went down, Shagaru was no trouble at all.

    This was extremely helpful, thank you! I’m an insect glaive main in world because I enjoy the manoeuvrability and being able to dodge rather than counter attacks. However what I sometimes find is that I panic dodge and very quickly don’t feel in control of the hunt so tactics go out of the window and then I’m just trying to survive. I think taking the time to learn these pre-emptive techniques would really help my hunting and build my confidence so that I can know the monsters next move and act accordingly rather than feeling I am constantly on the back foot in dodging their attacks. I've seen my two friends getting into the series with World, and the first thing I explained to them is to give a shot to each weapon before focusing on one, just to learn how to hunt efficiently (had to learn that in the hard way myself back in the days...). At first it was overwhelming for them, but they enjoyed the game a lot, I was so happy when they told me about all the fun they had hunting

    This is exactly why I told my friend who wanted to main Charge Blade to start with Lance :3 So he could focus on learning the Monsters first, and only after he understood their moves, then he could start to focus on the more mechanically oriented weapon knowledge.
    I often tell people there are categories of Knowledge in the game: There's knowledge about the Target (how a monster acts), Weapon (mechanics & timing), as well as Base knowledge (stuff that applies no matter what weapon you use or monster you're hunting, like UI, aiming, how upgrading and skills work) and Environment Knowledge (Do you need Hot drinks? are there Shortcuts or Traps?). Learning the "basics" or "fundamentals" will help no matter what weapons you choose :3

    I started in MHTri with the hammer and I was so proud when I figured out the timing to get Rathian with a superpound as she turned around after a charge. Like so many of your videos, this one takes an experience that implicitly happens to a lot of players and spells it out explicitly so everyone can learn and benefit.

I already know How to use or work the mostly MH's weapons but surprise me how I never get tired to learn some more with you and it's amazing the way we always have something more to learn no matter what. You are amazing. Thank you for everything!

    Played ever since 3U and started with Switch axe but then picked up Greatsword. I eventually used every weapon, but picking something that you like is a good way to start learning. It's always the first weapon that you have fond memories of and that's always been GS for me

    No only have I liked this video as much as all the videos you've done all these years that I follow you, but I think that you introduced a quite interesting thing categorizing the weapons into groups and I think that the community should use that and make more content about it, I never saw anything like this before but it's very useful and interesting, it made myself think: "what have I beeing doing all these years? I'm totally an Inosuke (Kimetsu no Yaiba), all I ever did was run around playing as good as I could and never really planned any strategy". This made me want to know even more about all the weapons and see other experienced hunters habilities. Thank you Gaijin, you're one of the most respectable hunters that I've ever known!

    I need to go back and pick up the Hammer, again. I realized, after so long away from MH, that I'm making a ton of nub mistakes with the Switch Axe that I wasn't before. I love when you put up videos like these. They 1) Make me want to go play more MH. 2) Make me go in feeling a little less confused.

    I started with Light guns in FU and fell out for a while (not by choice), When 4U came and brought the Insect glave everything I knew had changed, the reflexive nature of the weapon give me a constant feel of momentum during the fight. Haven't put it down since, but grasping at new concepts, especially in GU is well worth it for anybody.

    Funny how all 3 of my main weapons come in the Reactive Action category: LS, GL and Bow. I really like to be on my toes and dish out constant damage while being able to dodge or block. Of course, that takes patience and skill too and I'm not quite great at it yet.

  • @CiromBreeze
    @CiromBreeze 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I definitely think you have to play at least a bit preemptively with the dootstick, because you need big openings for your recitals and encores, especially if you want to use them aggressively and not corner-horn. Arguably more time needed than a GS charging without Focus.
    I think each weapon could easily fit into more than one category here!

    I'd have to say though I think Switch Axe is more or the "Reflexive Side" of weapons since the basic actions for it is chop-and-dodge. Styles and hurts definitely does change how you play with it, but the Switch Axe, especially in sword mode, was played more as a spam weapon with which you dodged with to keep up the spam.
    The elemental discharge, which is what can burst and stun a monster, was mostly used when an opportunity presents itself, and so usually the stun or flinch opportunity won't matter as much as the monster is probably down when you use it anyway.

    Thanks for the video. It really reminds me how I play monster hunter back then and how I should play it in the future. Your video reminds me how I should stay calm, observe and play strategically and being careful with my positioning.
    I don't know why but after I've started playing mhw, I feel like I started to play aggressive and blind. I started to not care the consequences of being hit or what position I'm standing. Whenever I see a monster, I feel like a madman whacking the monster and ended up eating monster attacks like a punching bag, tho they were not enough to kill me. I didn't realize how rusty I got until I tried to go back and play mh3u once, and I got my ass handed to me nicely by a royal ludroth.
    Tbh, I like this play style more. My mhw aggressive play style makes my heart raced and often frustrates me. But after I took it slow and steady, I started to feel more in control and more comfortable with the way I treat the game.

    I would personally argue that these are the most important skills for any monster hunt: observing patterns and reacting properly. I don't care what you try to kill the monster with, if you can't take advantage of the best times to hit it, and keep walking into it's attacks, you can't do much of anything!!!! Nice video, Gaijin.

    • @Stratelier

      I agree, 60% of a hunt is simply recognizing what a given monster is trying to hit you with -- and not taking the hit.

    I started my first MH game years and years ago choosing my main weapon simply by it's look. At that time it was the GS, was like the most cool looking weapon out there. I think that's how it should be with others too, choose a weapon that you think looks cool or fun and go with that. Don't worry to much about dps or meta or what not. Hunting is fun because we're playing the way we want it. Remember, no weapon type is weaker than the other. If you master it, any weapon is OP. So try all weapons and find the one you feel so much fun using.

    The journey to finding my main weapon was wild to say the least.

    Hey gaijin I just recently bought MHGU and got back from taking a break since I stopped playing iceborne (by the time it released last year) but playing MHGU made me realize how fun Monster hunter really is. What killed me in MHW was the lack of hub interaction basically they made such a big hub with hot springs similar to portable 3rd but there's never anyone in them so it feels bland and boring among other things, the game doesn't have that colorful quirky style either like you said in that other video and idk maybe they should have added at least a newer weapon to make the game feel fresh( unless you consider the clutchclaw a weapon). Anyway I started using bow in MHGU for the time in a portable MH overall its very fun to use tho kind of confusing for me since im using adept style and it removes some of the moves but I saw your bow guide and now I'm in more clarity. Anyways thanks for the guides and Vids hope to see more content from you!

    That's 2 of my mains, I intentionally drag the fight to 30mins+ if its my first time. And choosing the GS was not a bad first choice because it forces you to learn the monster, or else you'll find yourself being hit most of the time (and waste a lot of healing resources).

    SnS is pretty much the only weapon that i can use. I really like the elemental variety that it can offer,also the fact that it's really fast,you can dodge out of almost any attack and you get free mounts without taking aerial with adept and of course who can forget chaos oil and it's little chilrden.

    I recently started a new save file in MHGU and decided to only use weapons I usually don't use.
    Long story short, I have a lot of respect for people who uses gunlance. Such a high maintenance weapon. My brain just can't grasp GL playstyle. I also picked up hammer and lance, two weapons I rarely use but now loving.

  • @fabienz31
    @fabienz31 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    mfw I never watched any weapon tutorial, much less this video, and I already main one of each category. I'm main-main GS, and it's important to note that in MHW, with both the super armored shoulder bash and the recent iceborne mid combo slingshot, the GS can be played much more both reactively and reflexively. And I guess since thoses are specifics combos, it's also pretty explosive (or not, dunno).
    The category limits are blurry anyways, every weapon is its own thing. That's also what makes the game fun.

    This is so true! I began MH tri with the great sword and after many many hundreds hunts I tried the hammer and I loved it so much it became my main. Sadly I hate what hammer became in MHW so I went back to the great sword. But I love what they did with the GS and the gunlance.

    IMO in Iceborne, the charge blade can also be considered a preemptive action weapon as the flinch values are much higher (landing a big fat SAED with both physical hits connecting is not a safe bet it'll flinch a monster) AND monsters being far more mobile (rajang, ebony odo, brachy) means you NEED to play to punish a monsters recovery frames for very certain attacks instead of relying on pure stopping power
