As Dorothy put it "There's no place like home." Especially for Milo and Otis taking their new families back home to the farm where they truly belonged.
"And after the whole group was gathered together, Milo and Otis led the way down the road; The road that would take them to the place where their lives had begun; The road that would take them...Home." It has been too long since I've seen this. This was always a favorite.
I'm happy and relieved that Milo and Otis reunited once and for all with their families, leading the way to follow the road back home to the farm where they truly belong instead of being lost in the wilderness forever, which was not the place for them to live out the rest of their days, knowing the dangers it holds for domestic animals. Their real home was back on the farm, and they knew that's where they'll stay and raise their families, eventually reuniting with the rest of their farm animal companions.
This makes me feel old and young at the same time. The ending quote is always bittersweet. It's too bad when you grow up you learn about the sad things that happened to some of the animals while filming.
I haven’t thought of this movie in years, but I saw a pug and thought “Milo and Otis. Why’d I think that?” Googled it, and now I’m crying. So many memories just came back
Just like Benji the Hunted, Lassie Come Home, The Incredible Journey, Far From Home: The Adventures of Yellow Dog, and Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. I love movies about the journey and the return home plotline, always wanting to hope that the main characters eventually make it back home in the end where they belong.
Everyone should show their kids this movie. It teaches about finding friends, your first love, hardships, the miracle of life, growing up...this movie its just pure genius. its heart warming and sad and i love it. the best story of friendship in my book.
I'm especially happy at the end where the two families meet again and go back home together, never to be lost or separated again. They will be together forever on the farm and be welcomed back by the animals.
@@blue-sea8901 Three lessons that the ending teaches us: There's no place like home, home sweet home, and home is where your heart is. Milo and Otis may have separated for the time being after finding mates, but they never gave up hope on ever getting back home someday after the winter season was over and safe for them to travel again. I bet their farm friends were worried sick about them ever since Milo and Otis got lost.
Foxes, Deer, Cats, Dogs, and even Raccoons! Oh this is what I've always dreamed of, living with the animals that inhabited fields of grass and plains. I loved this movie so much and I can watch it again and again throughout my life and still love it. I love it because of all the animals and wild life, and I loved the fox and the deer--other than Milo and Otis being favorites!
One should never be ashamed of feeling both happy and sad after watching this movie, after knowing what Milo and Otis go through to find each other, separate for the time being after finding their own mates and having families of their own. thanks for posting this! When I was little I never got to the end so I grew up thinking it was a sad movie because they never got home -- now I know the truth!
I didn't like how in the Japanese version that the ending felt like something out of "Benji the Hunted" where the narrator was silent and didn't make it one hundred percent clear that they were already on their way home when showing the two families on that road together and not telling or revealing the whole ending which felt unfinished with questions than answers, being silent about it which made me cry, thinking they end up lost forever, knowing it can't end like that after everything they went through and deserve a better ending. Like in Benji, we see him complete his mission to save the cubs and leave them with a new mother, revealing him resting on a spot where we see the helicopter flying ahead, but no narrator to tell us if they finally found Benji and took him back home, despite that it implied he was found and rescued....offscreen. So I can assume that in the Japanese version of this film, it may not say so, but I'm sure it implies that Milo and Otis still eventually find their way home together with their families on the road straight ahead to take them there. They may not show the whole thing, but we know that's what the ending lets us know about.
Seeing Milo and Otis back home on their farm at 2:45, hopefully that taught Milo a lesson to never go near that river again that took him away from his farm especially since his mom told him and all her children never to get too close to that river.
Yeah. And I'm sure that Milo will help Joyce to teach the kittens not to make the same mistake he made. But if he hadn't jumped into that box, he would have never met Joyce and had a family. Just like Otis would have never met Sondra and had his family. So fate took them in different directions, but in the end, they all reunited and traveled on the road together back home to the farm where they belonged. They may have survived out in the wilderness till spring, but it was still not the place for Milo and Otis to raise their families. It's not the place for any domestic animals to be out on their own which is dangerous. So I'm happy that the English narrator helped clear things up that the Japanese version did not do in silence, despite Wikipedia site claiming that in both versions, the two families found the road taking them back home in the end, even if the rest was off screen.
@@Disneyfan82 I agree. Perhaps Milo will persuade Joyce saying something like, "now Joyce, I want you to tell our kittens that they can't go near the river" while marking a certain area saying that they should never go past up to this certain point. But yes, Milo getting lost away from his farm helped him to meet Joyce which helped Otis meet Sondra. That's also true that they all headed back to the farm together since the narrator mentioned that Milo and Otis agreed to take shelter in Winter (it would be best not to freeze for them) and during Springtime they will meet up and head home to the farm together. It was great that Milo and Otis met Joyce and Sondra but, another way for Milo not to get lost and get back home was after his wooden box ended up at the deadwood swamp which was the end of the river, Milo should have just walked back in the direction he drifted away and soon he would have met up with Otis since Otis followed the river to the end. Not only that but, I hope Milo's mom was still alive when they all returned back home to their farm.
@@afriendofbean And I bet after Milo and Otis get back home, they will have a whole lot of stories to tell the rest of the farm animals for ages to come, passing it down to the next generation. Even if they don't show it, I can see the farm animals surrounding them after their arrival, wondering and asking where they have been all this time, worried sick that they would never see Milo and Otis again until now. I hope their parents are still alive after that and being reunited with them off screen. Kind of feels like "Benji the Hunted" where we only see Benji on the cliff and the helicopter flying above to imply that he was saved and rescued, but I wish we saw more of that.
@@Disneyfan82 Yes I agree but, it depends on how close the other farm animals felt towards Milo and Otis wanting to hear their story but Otis would want to hear it because after he rescued Milo from that deep pit Milo said to him, "you have no idea what I went through, bears, snakes, and seagulls" and it sounds like Milo went through more than Otis having some animals being helpful towards him and some giving him trouble while Otis was meeting other animals who wanted to help him and some wanted to play with him. I can only hope the other farms animals gave them a happy greeting once they all returned back to the farm together wondering where they were, especially Milo's mom who was hopefully still alive and hopefully everyone would want to hear their adventures and learned never to go near the river that took Milo away and not to think about swimming in it either and if Milo's mom is still alive, and while she would be happy he was back, I can only hope she wasn't angry saying, "Milo, I told you and your siblings to never go near that river and they listened but you didn't." I haven't seen "Benji The Hunted."
@@afriendofbean Well sometimes movies don't always tell or reveal every single detail during the beginning through the end, due to time and money, meaning it's up to viewers to make their own implications and theories from what is already mentioned at least. I mean we never see Otis's mother besides his other siblings, so if she and Milo's mother are still there, I'm certain they would be one of the first to welcome them back home and be surprised to see the litter of kittens and puppies they brought along. I believe the other baby animals would be the most interested to hear their stories of survival out in the wilderness that will be passed down from generation to generation. Then there is that chick Otis watched after from the start who is probably grown by now and recognizes Otis, being another to welcome him back. And I did read the storybook version of the movie about the whole farm being in an uproar on the return of Milo and Otis, which should imply that they were welcomed back home.
when I watched this movie as a kid, I did not know anything about Dudley Moore, but after I've seen him in a couple of movies, I know him quite well now, he was a good actor, he sounds like the man of a hundred voices when he narrated this movie
Yes, Milo and Otis had fun on the way through every obstacle they faced, but now with families of their own, it was time to go back home together on the farm where they belonged because the wilderness was not the place for them to raise their litter together. Home sweet Home is the lesson for them in the end.
I'm glad that the English dub version of this film implies that they do go back home in the end together, something the Japanese didn't make too clear, confusing viewers to question if they still made it back home together instead of leaving them worried that they never go back. But then again, it wouldn't have made any other sense for them to be on that one road in the end together. Going back to their real home was the whole point of the film in both versions. The wilderness was not the place for Milo and Otis to raise their families.
I wish they had used the original score by Ryuichi Sakamoto. it had more feeling of the beauty and harshness of the nature of the seasons in Hokkaido. Anyway, the author/director of this film, Mr.Mutsugorou, who is the owner of the farm and Milo and Otis, is known as the most animal-loving caring person in Japan. it is just so impossible for him to have let animals die in the making of the film! and I remember seeing the behind the scenes, there was always staff around those animals.
I thought the Japanese version felt more like the ending of "Benji the Hunted" where we see Benji sitting in peace after completing his mission to help the orphan cubs find a new mom and all we see is the helicopter flying in the air, leaving it almost on a cliffhanger of audiences wondering if Benji ever did make it back home in the end. But I'm sure that's what happened to him after that, even if they don't show it on screen. Just like they only show the road in the end of Milo and Otis with their families on the road in the Japanese version, but that doesn't mean they stay lost in the wilderness when their main goal was to get back home to the farm once winter was over. Otherwise it would break my heart terribly if they never go back home when the wilderness is not the place for them to raise their families.

75 minutes edited down from 75 hours of footage shot over a period of 4 years, did anybody know that? 4 years, I'm sure it took less time than that to make movies like Homeward Bound: The Incredible journey & Charlotte's Web (2006) for Babe it took 7 years of development
I watched this movie a few times as a kid and I almost cried each time. After hearing the dark story behind the scenes a lot of cats and dogs were killed and that is just sad.
The guy who composed the music for this movie, Michael Boddicker also did the music for Flashdance. He also played synthesizer on Michael Jackson's Thriller and Bad albums.
This was made in Tokyo? I did not know that. Thats why there are only two English names in the credits. Thanks for posting this movie. Im going to let my 5 year old son watch it tomorrow. : )
Yeah, that may be true. But for Milo and Otis, their main goal was to get back home to the farm as soon as possible. The wilderness was not the place for them to raise their children and they knew it. So back home on the farm was where they knew that they truly belonged.

1:55 HAHAHAHHAHA HE RUNS OVER HIS OWN PUPPY
Milo and Otis 🥰😍
75 minutes edited down from 75 hours of footage shot over a period of 4 years, did anybody know that?
4 years, I'm sure it took less time than that to make movies like Homeward Bound: The Incredible journey & Charlotte's Web (2006)
for Babe it took 7 years of development
LMAOOO best bit wen otis runs over his own puppy LMAOOOO
My favorite part always puts a smile on my face
i love this movie i used to watch it all the time when i was little
I watched this movie a few times as a kid and I almost cried each time. After hearing the dark story behind the scenes a lot of cats and dogs were killed and that is just sad.
Awwe I remember watching this when I was a kid!
Me too.
Never forget this move
The guy who composed the music for this movie, Michael Boddicker also did the music for Flashdance. He also played synthesizer on Michael Jackson's Thriller and Bad albums.
Very good movie. Bravo! :)
So freaking cute!

This was made in Tokyo? I did not know that. Thats why there are only two English names in the credits. Thanks for posting this movie. Im going to let my 5 year old son watch it tomorrow. : )
i used to watch this when i was little!! :')
Me too.
1:54 omg that poor puppy 😂
For some reason part of me is often sad at the happy ending. I guess it's because the adventure's over.
Yeah, that may be true. But for Milo and Otis, their main goal was to get back home to the farm as soon as possible. The wilderness was not the place for them to raise their children and they knew it. So back home on the farm was where they knew that they truly belonged.
Great quality videos, thanks for sharing.
