2009 GMC Sierra 3500. Thanks for posting this! Laying on the side of the road in heavy traffic, in the rain, and it won't release 🤬. I saw the part where you mentioned that not tightening up until it clicked can be a problem, so l wound it back up tight( the end of the tool snapped off, thanks GM) and the lowered it again, and it came down flawlessly 🙌👌💯

Thanks a million for this video, I was about 5 minutes away from cutting the bracket off after spending a couple hours fighting it. I'm debating cutting the safety latch off when I put it back in. Here I thought taking off thr spare would be the easiest part of replacing the rear brake lines.

You can try lightly grinding the secondary lock so it doesn't catch so easily.

Worked like a charm, thanks. FYI, milk crates work great for holding the tire up while loosening it.

Thank You for this video. This was my second rodeo with my secondary latch. I thought all the lube I put in the first time would keep it working for a while, it didn't. I was at home so I could use a floor jack and piece of wood to jack the tire up to get the weight off. Getting the weight off is key to this operation as far as I can tell. I tried to trip that latch with the weight on but couldn't.
IMHO, I've been around the block enough to see GM pull some pretty stupid mechanical pranks but this secondary latch business even beyond them ... I SMELL GOVERNMENT REGULATION on this mess.

Good video homie. Def got a thumbs up. I hate this design with a f'n passion. I don't see them changing it anytime soon though. I live in West Virginia. So salt wreaks havoc on this system and is a nightmare from hell stranded inside the road trying to get this bastard down. Your message definitely is a big help but even with it I've had troubles at times. Maintenance on it is a definite plus and it can definitely save you some cussing down the road. There's been times I have beat, kicked, cussed, slammed it with hammer, cussed more, beat, slammed it with a hammer some more, pride pride and pride, and about every other thing you can do underneath it to no avail. Some pb blaster or wd40 helps when salt has dried up the internal works. A couple 3/8" extensions that's really long and a short one or two work pretty good when the cranking extensions get worn out. Def pay attention to the lil knob inside that you attach to because it doesn't take much slipping with the provided extensions to round it off. Then you do have troubles when needing the spare and it's snowing or raining, the kids are crying, woman is bitching, but nobody else will crawl under the vehicle....bu hey at least it is a place you can get away. Lol.

Alternative tip: The hoist is held in by a single bolt. If you remove the bolt and move the hoist toward the driver's side, the hoist will detach. Then you can pull the tire and hoist out from under the truck and work on it.

Loosen cable tension. Tap the bottom of the stem (you'll see it's spring loaded) with a mallet and that will also release the tire, very safely.

I was on the side of the interstate for over 3 hours the other day trying to get a spare tire to come down because the secondary latch was frozen. The cable would come down but not the tire. No amount of kicking or prying or pulling on it worked. What finally did the trick was raising and lowering the cable right at the point of where the catch kicks in until it finally dropped. Hope this helps someone I went through hell

My '99 Silverado and my dad's '02 Silverado did NOT come with this secondary lock mechanism on the cable hoist from the factory, that came later and then they did away with it, so they had it right the first time.

Thanks been yellin, screamin and throwin shit all over I thought that latch had something to do with it but I wasn’t sure. I was just trying to put the spare back under there. You mentioned when tightening up to continue until it clicks - it should click twice and/or skip twice(feels like the thing turning just breaks for a second and then comes back. I didn’t do that last time and that’s why I could get it back down. It’s a secondary lock system so the tire can’t fall off. The manual states that and insists the clicking or slipping twice. It also states you can not over tighten it, so no worries there. Thanks again brother

The "safety" latch is an INSANE idea.
I can't imagine ANYONE doing this on a dark night, on the shoulder of a freeway.
Crawling under the truck and poking/prying with a screwdriver is pure B/S !
If that's the best the engineers can come up with, they need to be hanged !
Get rid of that piece of junk !

    • @AnthonyJ350
      @AnthonyJ350  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hello I am actually going to attempt to drop the spare tire in my 02 Silverado 1500 for the 1st time in 21 years.. I know I know stop laughing.. Am I to understand that if I'm turning the jackpole, the cable will come out but the black safety mechanism could still remain hooked... Let's assume the tire doesn't drop down at all. What do you think would be the proper steps. I heard you say in the video it got loose but the tire would not come down. And do you know if there is a way to to unbolt the whole mechanism from the frame with the tire still mounted? Last thing is that half inch square drive on the winch accessible when you're laying on the ground the ground assuming I have removed that black tube.. I was thinking a cordless drill with a socket adapter, and I could reach over the top of the tire

Ok this is a spare tire. Why in the world do they make it so difficult to remove in the 04? I had a 2000 Silverado and it wasn't this difficult, you just let the tire down and turn the center fixture at an angle and pull it up through the center and remove wheel. Honestly these 2004's are going to strand a lot of people simply because you almost have to be a mechanic in order to remove it. This is so way not cool!

So looks like I fixed it. Wheel was mounted with the front of the rim against the bottom side of the truck. I flipped the tire and hoisted it and its secure now. Either that clamp wasn’t sitting securely against the rim and/or hoist was at its max up position not securing the tire completely. Thank you for your response. Got to lube up the wire while I was at it to! I blame it on BigOTires when they changed out my spare for a new tire ha!

Most trucks use a cable system of some sort though. Also a lot of people need to use their bed, like construction workers.

@@AnthonyJ350 true, but I’m a construction worker & carry lots of tools & Materials with the spare in the bed. That cable system sucks! On the other hand if I would’ve kept up on maintenance I’m sure it would’ve been fine.
