Hiking The Ireland Way with The Hiking Rev, Stage 2 - Sli Gaeltacht Mhuscrai, Kealkill to Millstreet

- In this video, I left Kealkill to start the second stage of my Ireland Way Thruhike, Sli Gaeltacht Mhuscrai. Leaving the country lane, I wandered once again in the woods only to encounter THE BOG! A fairly steep climb up the Shehy Mountains gave me the last glimpses of Bantry Bay and the southern coastline.
The beautiful community of Gougane Bara would be my next stop and a well deserved rest day at the Gougane Bara Hotel. They provided a lovely Full Irish Breakfast the next day before I set out hiking again.
On my way to Millstreet, I sauntered through the quaint village of Ballyvourney. As I arrived in Millstreet (pop. 1,500) I checked into the Knockdrish B&B operated by Doreen Dennehey.

I have to agree with you Rev - the Irish people are so kind and friendly. I was there in 2011 for a month and stayed at B&B's and also rented a house for a week on Valentia Island. It was magical and anytime I asked someone for directions or anything, they went out of their way to help me, it didn't matter what town I was in - everyone was always so polite and helpful. I asked the owner of a coffee shop if he could guide me to a nearby shop to buy a phone and he handed me his and said please use this to make the calls you need to and there is a shop nearby but it doesn't open for an hour so sit yourself down here and I will make you a hot cup of tea. This man was so generous to let me use his phone and when I needed directions to the B&B just outside of town another patron came to make sure I knew exactly how to get there. Each B&B host was a treasure of information and told us about the local must-see places and things to do. I will definitely go there again - maybe this time it will be to hike the Ireland Way 🥰

My husband is from Baelick, Macroom county Cork. The family has a dairy farm there. They are truly kind, sweet, hardworking people! So glad you got to meet the beautiful people of Ireland!

Another great video, I am 38 and from Minnesota and I can say that being half irish and seeing your series on the beautiful country has given me more of a push to get over there sooner than later. Loved the part of the lady feeding you, goes to show that there is still kind people in the world.

I THOUGHT THATS WHAT IT LOOKED LIKE! Yes, that's my newest tent. It's a little tricky to set up correctly but so far I like it.

@@TheHikingRev Maybe you want to consider a microphone with a so-called deadcat, just in case wind noise bothers you. I'm using one made by Australian company Rodes, directly plugged to my Smartphone. It's light, effective, does not require extra batteries and costs about 50-60 francs/euros/dollars.
Rev, be careful in those boggy places; they can be like quicksand. Such lovely places and hospitable people! May the Lord continue bless your trip!

Hi Rev. What a great video. Such spectacular views. I've walked through a bog where the grass seamed to float on top of the water and every step was a surprise of the depth of the water. At first it was a bit scary but it turned out ok. That plate of food was such a beautiful gesture I cried with you until you had your tent packed back up. God's love is great!

My wife and I did a 2 week 1700 mile driving vacation in Ireland and if any of the locals saw you looking at a map they would walk over and help you with directions...I’m biased because most of my ancestors are Irish but I agree with you that the Irish are super super nice, friendly and engaging. Thanks for sharing your video...I’m definitely going to hike the Ireland away..I need to finish the PCT first

Mind blowing beautiful scenery but it looked like you needed rain (mud) boots on your feet. Gorgeous butterfly and i got teary watching your reaction to the food the family generously gave you when you pitched your tent on their property. These days I think I’d rather live there than the USA. Our country has deteriorated in so many ways. …. Its just not the same anymore

Hey Graham. I did this hike in late August because of my passport situation. When I come back this year to finish the trail, I will probably do it in May/June.😁

When you hike through the bogs, your hikers and socks must get soaked. How do you continue to hike with wet feet and not get blisters? Or do you carry and extra pair of shoes/socks with you?
Hey Judy. I do swap my socks out each day. So that lessens the possibilities of blisters. 😁
I love your channel, but all your positivity makes you seem a bit like Ned Flanders. Aren't you ever grumpy?! lol - nice lady to give you a home cooked dinner. How many in America would extend such hospitality? Maybe in rural areas.

Just curious - are there fresh water supplies along the trail and where do you use the washroom? Thank you.

The only freshwater sources that I found on Trail was cattle troughs and asking homeowners to fill up my water bottles. I did filter my water that I got out of streams.
As far as using the washroom is concerned, I would dig a 6 inch cat hole, then bury it. 😁
