      That’s great to hear. It is soooo important. Literally the difference between life and death in a real encounter and so necessary if deescalation is going to have a chance. Thanks for watching. All the best in your training.

    i used it, but what i used more was directives-they put things in black and white
    as in
    “back up, don’t touch” clarity
    but this was great when things were too ambiguous pre tension

    A big mistake I see many a bouncer make, including Geoff Thompson himself and another popular RBSD guru, is to deliberately touch an aggressor while supposedly deescalating. Touching a hostile, or even just having your hands close to his face or above his hands, will often be seen as a threat and provoke an attack. These bouncers are correct in thinking that this dominating fence position provides them with better defence and offence but ignore the fact that it's poor deescalation and increases the risk of violence.

    • @Combatprofessor
      @Combatprofessor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Couldn’t agree more. We call it the principle of unwanted touch . The only time I advocate touching is when they are compressing your fence and you are unable to move away-truly stuck and cornered , or if you’re monitoring a weapon that has been drawn.

    Excellent commentary on this subject, one thing I've seen lately is the shocking lack of even this simple technique amongst Gardai (police) which would greatly increase their safety.

    • @Combatprofessor
      @Combatprofessor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sadly there was always way too little training given to police where I live and now the popular movement to defund the police is just going to make it worse. Second to budget, there is so much bureaucracy involved in making the smallest changes to curriculums. Decision makers usually want specific techniques and moves like this lock or that escape. Soft skills like the fence become too ambiguous. They’re hard to measure and manage. It’s a battle we are constantly fighting. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks Kevin. Reading Safe School and Taming The Serpent just now too. Brilliant stuff.
    Should fencing always look this way or is it important to find one’s own? If I imitate yours I can do it but it is incongruous to my usual communication.
    Is this lack of practice on my part or is it ok for fences/casual blur to vary lots?

    • @Combatprofessor
      @Combatprofessor  26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@crumplepoint2712 you need to find you own expression. There are for example very low variations that Thompson advocated but they don’t work for me at all . In law enforcement many officers struggle with basic assertiveness and they teach simple tricks like holding your vest. It’s definitely better than hands at the waist. The most important thing is that it’s up and actively moving and defining space, dissipating nervous energy, and keeping you in an active state of movement. Static fences are an exception state that I rarely use unless a situation is super tense and highly charged. It can be helpful to play with pre emotive striking and shielding from your fence-striking preferences will help you customize your starting point.

    I see a lot of wrist locks in BJJ and in stand up martial arts like aikido. But, I was thinking, why do we not see any finger joint locks in ground martial arts like wrestling and BJJ? The only place I see finger joint locks being used are in stand up martial arts like king fu, or aikido. So, what is preventing us from using finger joint locks on the ground. Such an application might be a life saver in a real life and death struggle that goes to the ground. Do you know of any finger joint locks that might be used in the guard, Mount, side control, or turtle positions?

    • @Combatprofessor

      Small joint is a huge part of JJJ ground work. You can get an idea here

      @@Combatprofessor Thank you for the link. I will buy this video. Another QUESTION - I notice that you have made a lot of homemade equipment to help you and others to build muscle memory. You can practice with this equipment when you have nobody to train with. I was wondering, have you ever made a piece of equipment where you can practice gun disarms for times when you do not have a training partner? I have been trying to think of such a piece of equipment to make, but, I am coming up with zero. There is nothing on the internet for sale for this particular training. If you could make such a piece of equipment, I think you could make a lot of money selling it to the martial arts community.

    Leaders around the world are predicting food shortages because of the war in Ukraine, blockade of the Black Sea, flooding in USA breadbasket, droughts in Europe, high price of diesel to ship food, decline in available fertilizers, inflation of food prices, supply chain problems with the lockdowns in China, unavailability of tractor and combine parts, and the burning down of 30 food processing plants in America in the last 12 months. This means there is going to be social chaos starting NOW and will increase as time goes by. Time to make sure my FENCE is in good repair. Ha ha. But, also, we need to now go out in groups. Don’t go shopping alone, especially to the grocery store. Go with a stout looking male in your group. We need to start thinking about forming groups for self protection.
