Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Fatslob The Wise? I thought not. It’s not a story the Arabia players would tell you. It’s a Viking legend. Darth Fatslob was a Viking Lord of Black Forest, so powerful and so patient he could use Siege and Walls to influence his opponents to stop... raids… He had such a knowledge of Black Forest that he could make his opponents resign with full resources. The defensive gameplay is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be... unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing a game after 5 hours, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught Voobly everything he knew, then some of the players started posting their victories against him in his wall. Ironic... he could save others from being attacked, but not himself.
I saw the Mayans and Britons ranking coming from a mile away due to your comment on the Mayans Overview video, but love the vid nevertheless. Huge props for the little Saracens gag that gave me a giggle despite you picking on their team bonus almost being a running joke!
On the subject of the Britons, I’ve never really been able to work out if Thumb Ring is actually all that important. Yes, it can help raiding, but if you’re just firing longbows into a massed-up army, in all likelihood you’re still going to hit something, and Thumb Ring might just mean you overkill a few units to the detriment of the rest of the army.
After playing some games as the italians, I've come to the conclusion that the Genoese crossbowmen are very powerful. First there's the shock factor of your paladins dying to crossbows without much effort, then there's stuff like they can hold their own against skirmishers and other ranged units. I once saw them massacre an army of battle elephants in 10 seconds! Amusingly, their biggest counter is halbs.
I think the Vikings should have had an honorable mention due to them having the best early economy bonus in the game along with the full Archer tech tree. I mean their is a reason why Vikings almost always go archers in feudal.
I just discovered the Persians as my archer civ. They only cost wood with the Persians special bonus, so you can spam them out like the cheapest trash unit. Combine that with the raiding Paladins, the tanky Elephants & the faster working TCs.. oh I m in love with the Persians! :D
My ranking would be: 1. Mayans 2. Italians 3. Britons 4. Vietnamese 5. Ethiopians. I think the Italians having a bonus for each of their 4 foot archers paired with the fact they all counter different things is highly underrated. You can make an army of skirmishers (more armor, counters archers) Genoese Xbow (counters cavalry) hand cannoneers (cheaper, counters infantry) and arbalests (more armor, general purpose) and crush anything your opponent throws at you
@Fernando JS who loses their italian archers to siege late game with a civ that gets a super fast imp time, that comes with a fully-upgraded-for-free-3/4-Huskarl? and how am i the first one mentioning the obvious a year later?
I am subscribed for more than a year now - never played AoE2 though. Today, I finaly bought the game on steam and can't wait to play it - I wasn't such excited for a long time.
That straight face while saying "Saracens' team bonus is useful for breaking down walls quickly" should get you an award. Because I actually thought for a split second you got lost in what video you were narrating.
Great video and hope you continue this series! We need someone to do top 5s or top 10s in the community and this was perfect! You can extend this to top other units, tops civilizations on certain maps, top maps, top ... moments, ect... Its really endless
As a Mayan player pretty much every game I was sat here fuming when he said Saracens #1, only to be made look foolish about 10 seconds later :') great vid SOTL
Mayans as #1 and Britons as #2 was pretty much set in stone and I believe almost nobody would object. The rest #3-#6 spots are also easy to point out with the Chinese, Ethiopians, Italians and Vitnamese, though their specific ranking is up for debate and cannot be 100% determined imho, since they are quite different from one another. In the ranking system of Spirit of the Law, I would say Britons and Mayans are A+, Chinese, Ethiopians, Italians and Vitnamese are A or A-, and all other Civs rank at B+ or lower. This is all ignoring Horse Archers and Hand Cannons. With these in mind, the ranking is a lot harder, but I think for foot archers, Spirit of the Law did a great job with the ranking, though some might argue between specific placements. Still I don't think anyone would have a much different view.
Oh I object to both. The Mayans don't have a good answer to anything with high pierce armor. The britons are quickly out-shot by other factions that get in range.
That 'against high pierce armour' thing is probably the only thing that keeps the Mayans from being totally OP tbh. And Plumes still deal 2 dmg to Huskarls per shot because of +1 vs Infantry so it's a bit better than a generic archer. With the Brits, Mayans and Vietnamese are your safest bet for 'closing the distance', as well as the aforementioned Huskarls - the rest will get peppered before they even get in range though. A high rate of fire means nothing if you are dead. :p
The Saracen are my #1 most infuriating civilization. I WANT to love them. The ideas behind them are interesting and fantastic. Archers that can take down walls fast, very unique market bonus, mamelukes are insanely fun to use, and an elite navy, yet almost every one of those bonuses have something wrong with them. The archer bonuses aren't nearly strong enough, their market bonus, while it is actually the most useful thing imo and way better than people think for an early game speed boost, but kind of debatable (I would really love a SotL Saracen video that analyzes this!), Mamelukes cost way too much gold, especially for the Zealotry upgrade, and the galley bonus is actually kinda meh in the new navy meta (good but not great).
@@roelofsonneveld1049 , if you own the HD edition of AoE2, just try those motherfreakers out. They shred TCs, Castles, and even fortified walls. @@roelofsonneveld1049 , the new mayan skirts tech can actually be quite more useful then people thought. And they can shred through buildings as well since for some reason their second projectile does one sold damage no matter how much pierce armor a building/unit has. Making Castle take 2 atk than 1. And with a Saracen Ally, it becomes 4.
Hi Spirit. I really appreciate what you do. I´ve been watching you since the very first japanesse overview civ and i could improve my game thanks to you. I think that aoe2 community has grown up on by the work of youtubers like you who show that aoe2 isnt just an ordinary game. In fact, its an unique piece of art. Thank you very much and keep making vids. Thumbs up for Vietnamese overview!!!
I was for the first time considering disliking your video because you put Saracens as #1, as Mayans is my favorite civ and you didn't even give them an honorable mention! you totally got me! lol Great video man keep it up!
I know I'm late to the party - but yeah, even if it doesn't win for raw damage against buildings, the Saracen-allied Briton Longbows are actually quite frightening against Castles, even, when they're in a decent-sized group. If you can just protect them from getting picked off by Huskarls, Skirmishers or Onagers, you're golden - while you may not raze their Castles very quickly, you're effectively untouchable for a good amount of time, for all intents and purposes, and can keep dealing damage from well out of the enemy's range. Then you can bring the Rams out while your opponent is effectively 'suppressed' by the sheer volume of arrows flying out at all directions. ... again, all assuming you can protect the Longbowmen well.
Haha, you had me there for a second, Spirit! I was like: "Huh, Saracens? I wonder what kind of marvelous explanation he has for why the're so good. Oh wait, he's trolling." XD
Hey man, if you abuse the market for the saracens (namely selling 300 stone as soon as you hit feudal), you can do an incredibly mean archer rush. Not to mention you can also fast castle by 14:40 (25 villagers+loom) without interrupting your economy and immediately start making two cavalry archers at a time right as you hit castle age (who DO shred through walls)
Seriously, though, I hope the Saracens get a nod when you do a civilization overview of the Vietnamese; the high pierce armor of the Elite Rattan Archer, coupled with the Saracen team bonus, makes them surprisingly strong against buildings.
An updated DE version of this video seems necessary for newer players. Vietnamese, Persians and especially Saracens got buffs as it seems, Mayans were nerfed. Also, I think you should add categories as in the „Best Civ“ Videos (Cavalry, Siege, Naval, ...). This could be Archer Rush, Late Game, Crossbow Play with Support Units, Value against natural counters, Amount of Micromanagement. You might come up with more.
If you are considering unique units, Korean War Wagons can be considered among the best archers in terms of their tankiness and high base attack, though they can be vulnerable to units with anti-calvary bonuses. I believe they also deserve an honorable mention.
Vietnamese are still one of my favourite. They have great archers and they're surprisingly flexible I've found. I've been playing Britons less nowadays but I'm still near unstoppable once I'm at full power with them - which to be honest is much rarer nowadays.I should try the mayans. I've been testing Incas recently as they have things that make up for some of my archers weaknesses but I never did go mayans.
Honestly, Obsidian Arrows is probably my favorite tech in all of AoE2. I just played a game where my opponent had fully walled on BF and didn't expect anything because I had only been making archers. Then after researching OA, I bust down his walls in two hits, park 30 arbs under his forward castle, and take it down within 20 secs, and he was just like "wtf is going on" in the chat xD 11 Siege archers ftw!
I would have give magyars an honorable mention as well. Their archers are decent for a rush with the extra line of sight, their cavalry archer are above average without being top tier, they don't lack anything in the tech tree if I recall well. They can't be counted as archer civ, but they're still solid
