Since you are using a 1/4 inch straight bit only means you are using the shank to rub against the guide. Won't this cause friction against the bit causing it to potentially heat and burn your guide? Also it looks like you extend the shank very far out. How much of the bit shank are you actually gripping in the collet?
It's actually better to use a bit with a bearing. For those who don't have one, I've shown that you can also use the bit that came with the trimmer. The length is not a problem, and it is firmly held by the collet.
@@twcdesign I'll give it a try. Nice design for sure. I would be more comfortable with a bigger router with a larger bit shaft diameter. I usually do things with hand tools since I don't make many iterations, but this seems versatile enough to build.

@coppulor6500 Mortising jig on a table saw or on a band saw. Best to save the router for things that can only be done with it. The router bit has less cutting service and therefore will dull much more quickly. There are lots of videos showing the other approaches.
from the mathematician's standpoint i adore this technique because at that point you have frontloaded all of the precision work. imagine you have apprentices working with you to complete orders - the result would be foolproof every time. incredibly sleek and hardly takes up any space in the workroom

The mortise jig should just be on the other side of the tenon insert, so you can just flip it around and it would be reversed.

I am with you there. I would definitely do a bit of bulk waste removal before stressing a trim router motor/bit like that.
It's actually better to use a bit with a bearing. For those who don't have one, I've shown that you can also use the bit that came with the trimmer.

What is the reason for the two side wings to protrude slightly, instead of being flush (3:39)?
I think it’s so that the blank for the tenon can be put right against the jig accurately each time?

You can do the same to the hole, having a guide as well
What about longer pieces of wood?
You can set up at 90 degrees and put the wood along the workbench. Bit more difficult to keep steady though.
