    So many lens reviews are tech-first and experience-second. Your style is the reverse, and it’s way more helpful in understanding how the lens will work on a real shoot. Thanks!

    Charlotte was an amazing model!! I loved her movements and how creative she was! The photos were beautiful!! I think all of my favorites were on the 28mm end! After watching a lot of your zoom lens videos, I’m learning that I really love distortion as opposed to the “flatter” look at the telephoto range. Awesome video and awesome team!!

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yesss I agree, it was SO much fun to shoot with her! And thank you, I think my favs were the 28mm ones too and a couple of the 200s as well. I'm the same as you, I always lean more towards having a bit more distortion and environment in my shots hence my fav prime is 35 :D

    The Tamron 28-200 lens would have to be the most generally useful lens ever made. The focal lengths in this zoom ( or similar from any other manufacturer) will enable you to do about 95% of your photography as a general shoot photographer. Of course specialised portrait lenses are going to do better portrait but are going to cost about three to four times as much. Back in the film daze I had a Tamron 28-200 and it was permanently fixed to one of my cameras. Just as an aside, I still have it attached to a film camera that I keep for nostalgic purposes. As an all purpose general lens it really can’t be beat and would make a super travel camera for a family that want much better images than smart phone photography could ever give. Also great for photos of the guys pumping iron down at the gym too for single or group shots (just saying).

This should be a nice video if you don’t have one(i didn’t check) to see how we can create a preset and where to find or buy good presets.

    The lens is a no brainer for travel photography. The sharpness is quite amazing for an all-in-one and the aperture is quite acceptable at all ends. 28mm is limiting but not a deal breaker for me. I'm definitely getting this lens but I wouldn't use it for serious shoots. For that, I still go to my 16-35 GM, 55 and 85 GM.

    I'm completely surprised that you tested out this lens for portraits! Somehow you made magic with it. I honestly think if you attached a potato to your A7iii that somehow you would still capture something magical. To me, this video demonstrates that the photographer, subject, lighting, and post-processing are much, much, more important than the difference between lenses. The Tamron 28-200 is such a versatile lens and I can't wait to have it for travel and hiking photography. I think I'll stick with my Sony 85 1.8 and Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 for portraits though.

  • @tubularificationed
    @tubularificationed 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    Couldn't believe my eyes how good these "super" zooms can be today. Even the bokeh style was mostly nice, and w/o green bokeh fringing. Actually no color fringing anywhere else neither. The contrast and flare robustness against bright light is also a surprise. If Sony only knew, what Tamron are doing for Sony currently :) Canon may become as good as they want with their newest cameras, but 3rd party lens support becomes more and more decisive, esp. when attracting new people photographers (who are usually on some kind of a budget) towards a mirrorless system.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @tubularificationed
      @tubularificationed 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LockeLeon By now I saw a TH-cam review which rules this lens out for now (for people/portrait) due to bad AF reliability. And no, this is not the "rare" isolated issue for AF-S which Sigma attempted to fix with firmware recently.

    Great video. Was thinking about picking one of these up for my outdoor portrait work since it covers all the classic focal lengths and then some. Not really concerned about the slower apertures with all the really good AI software out there that blurs backgrounds. I tried it on a screenshot from one of your photos here at f/4 and it looked great, like it was shot around f/2 or so. Those 4-5 shots starting at 9:13 (28mm-73mm) look like they could be in any fashion magazine. You'll notice most fashion magazines or online model portfolio shots from the big agency websites dont have photos with super shallow depth of field and really blurry backgrounds anyways, thats a TH-cam thing haha. Will probably get one of these. Thanks

  • @samsen3965
    @samsen3965 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    This was a highly educational and great review of this Tamy.
    To introduce myself, I love to have 1-fit-all but hate to see the result of a not-good UW zoom at the end of the day and a need to repeat it all!
    1st impression: Compare to their earlier Tamron 28-200mm f/3.8-5.6, this newer ultrazoom has done a great improvement.
    Then you really did well with natural light shooting, irrespective of the gear.
    Lastly, you showed very great collage images at the end, in terms of what this glass can do at the end, the first (FLs) was perfect. The second one (Bokeh in relation to constant ration Face Portrait) missed a major element. That is model's face was in motion so the viewer can not really compare the FL-related distortion of the face for comparison purposes.
    Nevertheless, to say excellent coverage.

    Most interesting in the bokeh comparison is not the bokeh, but the compression of facial features. From big nose, small head to small nose and big head and quite perfect around 50 to 100mm :-) I will use this slide to decide on the focal length in the future for portraits!

  • @Narsuitus
    @Narsuitus 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have a 28-200mm f/3.8 to f/5.6 Tamron that I especially like to use as a replacement for my 28-70mm f/2.8 and my 80-200mm f/2.8 Nikkor lenses when I need to obtain tight face shots to full-body shots on the beach around sand and salt water.
    Not only does my Tamron allow me to shoot quickly but it also saves me from having to change lenses on the beach and expose my more expensive lenses to sand, salt water, and high winds.
    Plus, for some reason, my clients seem to prefer the portraits produced from my Tamron over the ones produced from my Nikkors.
    When I shoot backlit portraits, I like to use fill-flash. For me, the variable aperture makes calculating the correct fill-flash ratio a nightmare.

    I shoot lots of back lit portraits with my A7iii and that's the only time eye AF seems to not always lock on consistently. I've heard it's a bit better with the a7r4. Even then though I rarely have an image that is out of focus. Usually just slightly changing up your angle will get it to lock on again.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm the opposite I feel like I shoot backlit all the time too but never really have any issues with the eye af which is why I mentioned it here. But yeah luckily with the small focus point pretty much all my images were sharp anyway :)

    Will this lense be good on Sony APSC? It seems a great all in one lens on Full frame.

    I came on here to have a look at this lens to go with my new Sony A7iv, here in the UK. Although I have the new FE 20-70 f4 and FE 70-200 f4, I want to buy an all-in-one light travel or walk-around-lens, and one that is versatile and light enough to shoot portraits like this, with wider apertures. It seems to be very impressive. I also use the Sony 85mm f/1.8 and Sony 50mm f/1.8 for model photography. May I just say that your model Charlotte is really pretty. Gorgeous girl.

    I just purchased this lens to take with me to Universal Studios. It will be the only lens I take with me. It's now May of 2022, and firmware updates of addressed the focusing issues.

    Hi Julia, what settings do you put on your focus settings? Is it on wide? I can't seem to get my subjects to be on focus. Thank you

    I bought this lens but was disappointed it did not come with a tack sharp model. *shrug* But mine is getting used for hiking and travel. It's very sharp on the corners for the price. It's pretty much the best budget lens to come out for the e-mount that you can do almost any kind of photography.

    I have this lens... not sure yet if I am happy with it. It does not have IS, so if you are shooting on the long end of the zoom you need faster shutter speed to get crisp shots. The Sony IBIS works, but is not great by itself. If light conditions are bright, you can get good shots, but on a rainy day you have to get the ISO up.. The small end (say 35 to 75mm) is great. So think of this as a 28-75mm that can zoom to 200 if conditions permit........

      Tamron has a 28-75 and 75-200 at a constant f/2.8. I believe they have a 16-28 too, so pretty much the whole range at a constant f/2.8. Might look into those.

    I just ordered Sony a7C silver with the tamron 17-28 f2.8 and need now a cover of 28 to 200 or 300mm range. i hesitate with the combo sony 24-105 constant f4 + tamron 70-300 4.5-6.3 or the tamron 28-200 f2.8-5.6 alone. the camera today are ok up to 6400 ISO, i don't see the problem of pushing the ISO. I don't think than the eyes can distinguish between 100 and 320 ISO with a sony a7c. i have compared the photo at multiple iso files from a labs and have them side by side on a 32 inch 4K UHD screen and there are no difference. there are not too much difference between your photo with the 35mm and this one. the photo are darker but there is not a huge difference honestly. a post edit can probably reduce the difference massively.

    Sounds like an awesome lens. Really impressed with the shots on the long end. I wonder if I should grab the 28-100 together with the 17-28 to cover all my landscape stuff and get a 85mm 1.4/1.8 for portraits instead of simply buying the full "holy trinity" (17-28, 28-75, 70-180).

      I have this Tamron 28-200, then a 20mm 1.8 for landscape and astro, and I'm getting an 85mm for portrait. should be all I need!

    Awesome review Julia! Very comprehensive and concise, nailing all the important aspects of a lens. Thank you! I currently have the 28-75 f2.8 the 70-180 f2.8 (both tamron)and got this 28-200 to test out and see if i should sell one. Ultimately i think I’ll keep my original lenses but regardless, this lens has an incredible value and performance compared to its cost. Perfect budget zoom all in one or travel lens for sure. But thanks again for your videos, they’ve definitely helped me on my photography journey :D

      Thank you so much, I appreciate it! Yeah I feel like you're pretty set with those 2 lenses, I LOVED the 70-180 so would be really cool to be able to try out the 28-75 one day too.

      Thanks for the informative review, Julia! @Matthew, I'm also trying to decide between Tamron 28-75 and 28-200 (have 70-180 and love it, too). What made you decide to keep the 28-75 ultimately?

    • @matthewchute5514
      @matthewchute5514 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tech4Baba I wasnt aware of it at first, but the light transmission is almost a full stop better on the wide end with the 28-75. If you watch dustin abbots review comparing the two, you can see that on the wide end, he had to reduce the shutter speed by almost half on the 28-200 to get the same exposure (like 1/50 for the 28-200 and 1/100th for the 28-75). The disparity of between the two lessens near the 75 end, but being that I love shooting in low light and already owned the 28-75, I stayed with that. That being said they are all great lenses! Hope this helps!

      @matthew I currently use the Sony a6000 and I have the 85mm 1.8 for portraits and 18-135 3.5-5.6.
      What else should I get? I shoot families and street photography for travels

    • @matthewchute5514
      @matthewchute5514 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @westrayc75
      That all depends! Do you find yourself repeatedly using specific focal lengths? Do you really use the zoom range when shooting street photography? Do you like shooting wide open or at a specific time of day? All things to consider :)
      You’ve got a great focal length range between your lenses (love that Sony 85 f1.8!), but if you wanted to upgrade you could always get a wider faster prime such as 35 Or 50 f1.4 or f1.8. 35mm is great for street photography and also would be nice for wider family portraits.
