Arma Reforger - AI Test Indoors

  • Testing Arma: Reforgers Vanilla AI. Scenario was game master, with a few infantry squads engaging me hiding in a building.
    While the AI are now able to move inside the buildings, they still have a long way to go. As you can see in the video, the AI are susceptible to being farmed at doorways, and rush across/into them to revive team-mates. Additionally, the AI take too long to react to the players LOS (up to 5 seconds in some instances!) and sabotage themselves.
    Hopefully BI will continue to fix these issues, the purpose of the video was to demonstrate how easy it is to eliminate more than a dozen AI by simply hiding in a building, where improvements can be made.

    I've alway felt like the buildings are need to be about 15% bigger for decent indoor action

    The AI's work very well, especially on smaller custom maps with their skill setting set to Cyclons in the world editor.

      It may be different on custom maps but my experience has been poor. The AI is clearly bare bones, and doesn't yet have basic functionality worked out. I'm not adjusting skill setting so as to gauge the default AI strategy. Their behavior is... half baked.. from my observation. I'm more looking for actions that make sense, not necessarily better accuracy

      @@zeektm1762 Well, on my custom map, they will chase me down, even into underground structures, but yes, when it comes to the combat itself, that leaves alot to be desired, the accuracy did get alot better when i set my own custom AI's to cyclon, instead of shooting at me after 3 to 4 sec, they shoot at me as soon as they see me and hit me alot faster.

    The AI reaction times are unrealistically slow, that's the main issue here. The fact that they are at least facing the right way most of the time is at least some progress. They also seem to assault en masse a bit more effectively. Looks like they just need to add some simple CQB scripts for room clearance, and also really reduce their aiming-shooting time at very close quarters. Can be longer at longer distances.

    Not really sure whats good about it here? They just lined up to get shot, I remmeber the ai on metal gear solid, they'd open the door a quarter of the way, throw a frag or flash, then they'd all burst in and start shooting

      Because the AI was optimised for small levels and room clearance. The AI in arma has to do sooooooo much more.

      ​@@hustlekingcairo3317mgs ai is actually far simpler. Just has a few scripted features designed for the game's needs. Arma ai has to handle far more.

    Is house clearing better then Arma 3, because it's kind of clunky in Arma3 where my camera or gun would go through the wall or the door would shove me out of the way sometimes killing me. I was thinking of getting the game, just wanted to know how well the cqc is

      The AI have the *potential* to be much better in indoor environments. Including complex terrains or hybrid terrains. Unfortunately, AI is not as much of a priority for this title as it is marketed mostly for console/MP audiences. My hope is that A4 differs in that regard. However, AI mods will be very hot for A4 and Reforger.

      @@zeektm1762 On smaller maps with a proper navmesh and the AI skills set to cyclon in the world editor, and they will react much faster.

      ​@@zeektm1762actually AI is a priority. BI is working on an update that'll add the ability to command AI units on the ground, and they'll be able to drive and conduct their own supply runs in Conflict. They're not prioritizing consoles. If anything, they've brought consoles on the same terms as PC since they recently added mouse and keyboard support. BI is developing an Arma title on a brand new engine which is why this stuff's taking time. When the official helicopter update arrives, the AI will be able to fly them too

      @@Brody_Austin I haven't observed any indicators that improving the AI is a priority, more so currently just implementing features that we already had in A2/A3. AI being able to fly is basic, AI being able to take cover is basic. I am curious where you heard about AI being able to do their own logistics, could you share? That is exciting if so.
      I'm afraid I have to disagree with the notion that they aren't "prioritizing consoles". The types of discussions I have seen on the typical forums and the words from the developers portray this game as being an attempt to appeal to the console milsim audience, which is *not a bad thing* at all. I'm reserving my final judgement for when Reforger enters Beta.
      I agree with the sentiment that the engine is a factor in the slow development.

    it's alright, but do they ever use grenades or any utility? ai can think to open a door, there can be procedures that could maybe take over for more effective clearing

    I'm playing this game since it was operation flashpoint, ai indoor was never a thing as game atmosphere is mostly played in wide open ground, but driving ai was much better in first game, and it just became worse, in Arma 3 u can never trust on it.

    the AI is clearly low skill here, up their skill and the time to react will be much faster and will feel completely different.
    only problem I see here is that you kept their skill low and thus you can "farm" them. so its not something they need to fix, you can already fix it yourself in the options.

      The AI is default settings. There is no way to “up the skill” in Reforger Game Master. I am basing my footage on default skill, as it is what BI views average AI competency to be. There was no modification to the units.

      Also, the skill of the AI is not the problem. Having a much higher accuracy only turns them into robots, which is not the same as adding meaningful dynamic behavior.
