Nehemia, as a calligrapher, I can only say that a single scribe would use only the one type of ink. I use one kind of ink for all the writing, and then maybe a different ink for embellishment. It would be unusual for me to use different inks for the main text of any piece I am scribing. It's just easier to do that, especially given the very different qualities of the 2 main inks you are discovering in Sassoon. This is just so interesting, thank you both for the discussion.
Worth noting you live in a society where it is logistically very easy to get consistently matched ink on demand. Some scribes of old may have had to make do with whatever was available at times

Nothing else has been permitted because of lack of durability. The gall-nuts dyo (and even carbon) may have a slight difference in composition with each mixing but the two show up differently under the scanner that Dr Gordon uses.

When I see the image of the Name @9:53 I feel like I'm witnessing a miracle. Why? When I looked beneath the Name at all the rest of the vowels, I noticed that for all of the other vowel markings the original ink has flaked away until they're quite literally a shadow of their original form. But not the cholam. At first I thought it had been re-inked along with the letter since it looks as dark as the letters that have been re-inked. But, under the ultraviolet light @10:32 the cholam is not the color of the re-inked letters. In fact, under the ultraviolet light it looked like the same color as the other vowels that were never re-inked! If it's the original ink, that would mean that it went through the same aging and use that caused all the other vowels to flake away and caused the letters to need re-inking. But not it. Not the cholam. In my finite brain, that means that God would've had to preserve it Himself "for such a time as this" as a witness - I think - to the truth. I wait, in excitement, for the day you get to examine it further!
The Codex Sassoon will be permanently displayed at the ANU Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv so your prayers have been answered. It should be no problem for Nehemia to examine further. Amen.
First, wonderful info. A thought on the YHVH erasure. Restriction was not to erase a letter.... This erasure didn't erase any letters completely. Karaite loop hole?
Interestingly the Leiden Peshitta reads דהא קאבותא דדיתיקא דמריא מרה דכלה ארעא Behold the Ark of the Covenant of MarYa (Lord Yah i.e. Yud-Hei-Vav-Hei) Lord of all the earth.
