I'm excited for this new format! Since you asked for feedback at the end, here's some stuff I'd like to see on the Road to Ghana. First, do breakdowns of your games where you reflect on your progress - and actually reflect on your progress in them. Point out instances where your dictionary study has paid off and you've spotted a word you wouldn't have previously, or where you made a smart strategic move during an instance where you would have previously wasted time. Second - play some friendlies or go over your old matches with fellow Scrabble legends, and do a brutally honest post-match analysis afterwards. You've already identified some areas where you made small decisions that lost you a game or a tournament, and it was awesome to see you break those down. I'd also love to see the opposite side of the coin: have one of those players that's at the elite level that you're trying to reach break down *how* they managed to beat you. I'm sure you've built up enough good will with Team Nigeria or all the rising stars that you've introduced this audience to that they'd agree to a format like this - and as an audience member I'd love to see you interact with some of these big, wholesome personalities and break down a game in a less formal manner. And lastly - let's have some fun with this format. I'm nowhere near a Pro Scrabble player and had no idea how competitive or interesting it was until I started watching your videos. I'd love to see a video where you narrate your thought process during a game: play against a computer and tell us what your thought process is during every move. No idea if half of us would even manage to follow along, but it would be cool to get some insight into your process. I even think there could be some merit in doing a clickbait-y challenge video: if you want to make progress on wasting less time and focusing more on strategic play, why not play a game where you're only allowed 30 seconds max to make a move! Then break it down afterwards, see how often you made a "correct" move with the benefit of hindsight. Best of luck in Accra, you have this whole community rooting for you
Mack Meller does a bunch of series that's him playing against a computer and narrating his thoughts - it would be really quite interesting to have Will do the same thing to compare.
There is obviously more than one person with the name and not meaning to accidentally dox you, but Peter Morris was the first world scrabble champion (in 1991), and also a national champion in 1989. If you are indeed this person, that is quite humble of you to say you are "nowhere near a Pro Scrabble player", even though I acknowledge the dictionary has been updated multiple times since the last tournament Peter Morris played.
@@morrisgreenberg5223 Sadly, I'm not that Peter Morris. Although his name is probably one of the first things that comes up when you Google me - along with the football manager, a character from Heartland, and some guy who deals antique coins.
@@morrisgreenberg5223 Nah, he just thinks he's washed up too... If this is the world champ Peter Morris, he and Will should get together and practice together to get back in the game.
Will, there's a pokemon youtuber called Wolfeglick and he draws very close parallels to you. He is a former world champion who took up content making as his main focus. I would really recommend going through his video series of attempting the world championship each year, breaking down his prep and run throughout the year with a grand finale of the championship day results (which includes bits of everything leading up to that point)
No notes from me. If my viewing pleasure is a factor in this series, I'd ask you keep the reviews pithy like the ones you did here. When you go into Mack level detail, it quickly buries the rank and file viewers such as myself. I love the guy, but holy moly, I feel like I'm taking the SAT while watching some of his breakdown videos! I imagine it's highly useful for other scrabble experts, but we normies can't all handle all that delicious data. If the primary goal is to document your own progress, then do whatever you want, though :P
This is an incredible idea. Your attitude seems to show such pretty clearly already, but it never hurts to remind that positive self-talk is an essential piece to preventing self-critique from becoming negativity. Always an opportunity to do better, and always the capability to grasp such an opportunity. That's what you're displaying.
This video in particular might’ve been a little harsh because I’m somewhat starting from square one to build my skills back up again, but future episodes will definitely focus on the best moves I made as well!
How brave! Here’s what I think about this commitment - it’ll probably improve your scrabble results, but it will certainly improve your mental state on and off the board. This continuous improvement mindset can’t fail to unlock valuable internal intangibles. A quiet, strong example for younger folks facing their own daunting ambitions.
I love this video, especially the concrete examples of how small improvements to in-game decisions can make a dramatic difference. I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes for you on the road to Ghana!
Really enjoy this form of content. Coming from a chess playing/watching background, it's always easier to understand and apply game analysis from the person involved. The analysis of other people's games you do is always great, but being able to get your insight on your own play is invaluable and helps convey the different ways of processing Scabble at the highest level. Looking forward to the rest of this series!
If you were a fighting game player you would be getting a standing ovation from the entire community. Really excited to see where this goes. Best of luck on your studying and travels.
Will, this video resonates with me in so many ways. Although (or maybe because) I've been luckier than you have been results-wise, I've been extremely unmotivated to improve my game and word knowledge these few years. This year, out of various other errors, I lost my only game to Nigel (and allowed him to equalise his WESPA record against me) because I missed a simple 4-letter Z play which would have cleaned up my rack and set myself up for an outright winner. I'm still undecided on whether to go to Ghana, but I am similarly excited at the prospect of playing the top African players there. Your videos make me even more excited about Ghana. Whether I'll eventually see you there, I'm definitely looking forward to follow your Road to Ghana, and perhaps I'll get myself more motivated to improve too!
Kudos for being so transparent and sharing your goals as well as your analysis publicly. I think an honest assessment of the status quo is indispensible and the first step to reaching your goals!
Love the new format, mistake analysis is a good way to learn. 3:38 That's cool, maybe you can make a kind of puzzle series with positions like this. "Where is the best place for this word?" Or different words in the same spot and ask which word is the best, both pointwise and game technical
I'm excited! One small bit of feedback: in this video, you focused on what would have changed with what actually happened in the games. What actually happened isn't always the best judge of what you should have done! However, in these cases there is a reason why the plays that you suggested are improvements, and what actually happened is a reasonable result. I wish there was more focus on the board differences between the plays versus the actual result (like 6D FIQH temporarily closes off the top left of the board and forces bingoes to have a late S or fit overlapping SPAIRGE vs. blocks my opponent's only bingo). You could do a summary of the differences before showing the actual result to make this more clear, perhaps.
I haven't been watching any scrabble videos for a while. I just got a board and some friends that will play with me, though. Im so excited to come back and see this new series!
This is exciting! I just turned on notifications for your channel. One thought: if you find yourself thinking about TH-cam when you’re playing, remind yourself that playing Scrabble in that moment is the best thing you can do for the content, no matter how the tiles land.
Really good advice. I do find that once I’m in a game, everything else kind of fades away except for the puzzles of each turn, but it’s definitely something to look out for.
You were so dominant for three full days at the last Worlds -- that's not a fluke. If you had to compete in Ghana today, you wouldn't be a long shot, but I'm confident you'll be fully prepared by the time November comes around! Rooting for you to bring it home!
I usually only watch your game analysis videos, but I liked this one too since you that was a big part of it. I love how you edit the scenarios and moves, so easy to follow
Love to see the build-up to these types of events! One thing I will say is that the more relaxed you are, the more brainpower you have in your arsenal. The more fun/challenging, the more freedom your subconscious has to roam and find all the small details your conscious mind couldn't see. Anyway, goodluck and I'm really looking forward to this series :D
I agree with this for sure. In general, I do find that playing Scrabble brings me joy, though like anyone, I have my limits after a bad string of draws or a blown game.
I love your videos... I also appreciate your "vulnerability" However you are indeed a great player. Rightly said, The World championship in Ghana would be a great opportunity for lots of Nigerian players across all categories.
I love these mistake analysis videos. I think these are valuable to for everyone to see. It's just absurd that just playing the same word in a slightly different spot is all it takes to win or lose a game.
Scrabble is too hard of a game to not make any mistakes at all, so regret is inevitable :) but if I prepare diligently and stay focused, satisfaction is also inevitable!
Nice video once again Will. The Road to Ghana series will help others to prepare. Winning in Ghana might be a long shot but it's well worth the try. While we would love to have you play more live games, we'll miss your coverage/commentary. Another great one coming in the middle of the Albany New Year tournament
I recently found your videos and have just now realized you’re a competitive player as well lol! Your storytelling and digestible videos made me think you were primarily a TH-camr, good luck on your journey !
This is a great idea Will, much akin to Gotham Chess and his "Road to GM" series which has been a huge hit. I'm looking forward to this content in 2025, good luck with the tournaments!
Loved it, I never really played Scrabble outside of a casual basis, so I find this really interesting to see what scrabble looks like for expert players.
I think it is great! Many times we see only highlight videos, it is good to see more realistic scenarios were mistakes naturally happen and there are areas of improvement.
you definitely still got the goods! i personally love seeing you do a full analysis of your tournament games, i watch mack as well and my favorite parts of his bestbot series is his analysis of his moves after the games, i learn more from that than watching the game itself, could help you do deeper analysis of your own games as well maybe? good luck!
I could definitely see going a little deeper from time to time, but Mack is absolutely unparalleled in the depth of his analysis, so it would be a tall order to match him on that front. If I have a particularly fascinating game, I’ll give it a shot.
Hell yeah! That'll be a blast to follow along! As an amateur athlete myself, I'd recommend taking a close look at physical fitness as well. The tough fourth day at worlds recently could suggest that fatigue played a factor.
This is actually going to be a huge part of my prep. In 2017 I used to take an iPad to the gym and anagram words on the stairmaster for about an hour each session, and I was both fit and well-studied. Time to revive that habit!
Good luck! I think the key is always to enjoy wherever you are and whatever you're doing, since regardless of the end result, you can at least be satisfied in what you did at the time. Also, you might want to seek to get acclimatized somewhat to Ghana's temperature beforehand, since it's quite a hot and sometimes humid place (though my recall is November is quite dry). There were regular blackouts when I was there (though that was a long time ago, 15 years or more by this date; but it seems they still have them though I never stayed in a commercial hotel in Accra), so it's not a certainty you'll have conditions you're often used to. Getting used to everyday things in Ghana like drinking water from sachets (not necessary but likely one of the more common ways to get clean water), Ghanaian food (they will have foreign cuisines but many will be tailored to the Ghanaian palate, which is a bit different to a standard NA one - and they very much use a lot of foods that if I recall, you're allergic to? Allicin-bearing ones in particular) and the like might be helpful too. Anyway, all I can say is that if I won something, you're a far better player than I ever was - and while the world has gotten very strong in recent years, I don't know if the return has ever been commensurate with the effort. So try your best, it's still mostly a lottery, and I love watching your videos and am rooting for you and everyone else to do their best and enjoy the ride while you're on it.
Go for it Will, you can do it. (Instead of just loving the game, you must learn to love winning the game more too, the key word here is love, love conquers all).
Will, there are some things I'm curious about as an outsider. How do you work on the more intangible aspects of the game, like board vision? What about working on word placement, since those led to some bad outcomes in the games you showed? Do these things just come from playing more over the board tournaments, or are there tools for specifically improving these aspects of your play? Either way, rooting for you on this journey. It sounds like you are already making great strides towards improvement. Can't wait for the next video in the series!
I think for some of the focus-lapse type errors, actual live game practice over a board is the best way to get sharper. As for tools, many stronger players, myself included, get a lot of mileage out of analyzing games with an engine like Quackle or Macondo. Not every single computer recommendation should be considered gospel, but I think engines have a lot to teach human players.
A while ago, I made a video on this topic here: How to Win at Scrabble: Learning Words th-cam.com/video/HSh-6GWxqws/w-d-xo.html If you give this a watch and feel I missed the mark, let me know what I could include to improve.
Is hosting the WC in Ghana a good decision? Seems like many countries have high caution travel advisory warnings for going there. Whether or not these warnings are valid, I wonder if it will make any of the top players think twice about going.
When there's a Will, there's a way!
Absolutely great statement, Mack!

As for tools, many stronger players, myself included, get a lot of mileage out of analyzing games with an engine like Quackle or Macondo. Not every single computer recommendation should be considered gospel, but I think engines have a lot to teach human players.
Wow, this is an excellent video. Good luck with your journey!!
Hey Will, could you do a video going over your process for studying words? This is always the part that I have the hardest time with
A while ago, I made a video on this topic here: How to Win at Scrabble: Learning Words

If you give this a watch and feel I missed the mark, let me know what I could include to improve.
Best of luck! Looking forward to watching you win the World Championship!! 😁😁
Lol, that’ll be tough, but getting back into top form and giving it my best shot will be enough for me! Thank you!
loved it! definitely want more of these
Excited for this, curious have you been inspired by GothamChess's Road to GM series at all?
Absolutely, as well as others like WolfeyVGC who do a fantastic job chronicling their experiences at big tournaments.
massive fan of this style - reminds me a lot of Wolfe Glick's tournament breakdown videos for Pokémon VGC
I’ve watched a bunch of WolfeyVGC and I’m flattered by the comparison!
Can't wait for this series. You and Mack could battle on the Aerolith challenges
Great video. Can't wait to see your progress
We're cheering for you! Nigel won't know what hit him!
Nigel isnt playing next year so you definitely have a good chance of winning!! You can do it!
Good luck! You've convinced me to study the dictionary during 2025 too!
Nice one Will, you can do it ✊🏾💯
Looking forward to this series
Is hosting the WC in Ghana a good decision?
Seems like many countries have high caution travel advisory warnings for going there. Whether or not these warnings are valid, I wonder if it will make any of the top players think twice about going.
Best of luck Will. Despite what everyone has been saying I still consider you like the Marie Curie of New York.
Love the ambition, keep at it!
Hype has been built! Goal 3 is already a success
Good Luck Will! You got this!
