    Have always been impressed by your running: calling specifically. Your calls are loud and clear and accurate. A quick, short “YES”, “NO” or “WAIT” followed by one of the former. Always spot on. Good communication, information about bowlers to incoming batters, and encouragement are all keys to a good, winning partnership.

    I'm with you Gareth. Play to win, it sets the tone for the team as they progress through the season. However I understand their choice to bat out the innings as that can be a psychological advantage for them to build their future innings where as confidence improves in top order batters the runs will come. Love your content mate. Scratches my cricket itch in the Aussie cricket off season😅 Hope to see you in Australia in the future 🇦🇺

    Interesting points at the end Gareth. Inevitably, it’s the bowling team that need to take the wickets, so the onus is on them to be creative to take the wickets.
    The batting team should obviously go for the win, but the way league cricket is structured, points matter.
    It’s the batters day out as well, so instead of throwing it away, get some middle time, find some form, because next week you might have the chance to win.
    If you can’t get them out and get maximum points, look at yourselves as bowlers first.
    Slightly different perspective but there we go. I’ve been on the end of some hidings and dished some out. What did you learn from game. Regardless of result.

    Be glad you weren't playing in the South West of England until around 2012, where we played 55 over games with the options to win, lose and a win/lose draw. If the team batting second though they couldn't win they would go for the losing draw option, usually with 40+ overs of defending, sometimes the whole innings if the team batting first made over 300. It was torture.

    It's the job of the opposition to make it as hard as possible for you to get them out. Behind the game at 70/5, they've done a great job to come out with a point and some of the tail enders have had some time at the crease which will help them a lot more than swinging for a couple of overs.

  • @richardgrant4718

    Interesting comments here about a team "shutting up shop".
    I personally feel that batting is all about bravery - chancing your arm. Imagine if Botham or Stokes, in seemingly impossible situations, had opted for a draw instead of going for the win - which in a couple of instances turned whole series around.
    As far as your fielding side is concerned, we all know how difficult it is to prise out batsmen in purely survival mode. It often takes special tactics to do the trick - like positioning a deep mid-wicket on the fence and then bowling a slow full toss. Or making intimidating field placements.
    Such is the beauty of this game of cricket. Such a play on skill and emotions.

    You are 100% right Gareth. If this was international cricket with careers on the line it's one thing, but y'all are there for the love and fun of the game. Maybe they'd miss some points, but I bet they'd remember this game way more fondly if one of them had strode out, connected with a few and got a 50 or something than they ever will remember getting 2 competition points by blocking all innings. At least then they'd have something to talk about over a beer after the game as well.

      @@dazharan no they won't. they won't remember the game at all. and if they go to any kind of finals and do the same thing, they won't remember that either.
      dunno if you play cricket, but the stories you tell are never about the time oh yeah we stalled the game and blocked out a four. you don't get excited or nostalgic thinking about the 50th time you blocked a mid-division club bowler. nobody wants to hear about that.
      you do talk about the time you walked in with the team 9 down and a hundred behind with 10 overs to go and you launch into them with your partner at the other end, put on 90 and just go down swinging in the last over. that's the legendary stuff that you remember about playing. sure most times you'll roll your eyes back to the sky and try to heave the first ball into orbit and get bowled, but you can't have the story if you don't even try.

      @@henhicktaimon buddy I played in this same league for 4 years, I've played for a team at the bottom of the league fighting relegation and for another club at the top trying to win it. It's 2 different mentalities. Every point matters - especially when you're in a relegation scrap.
      Teams often go down by 1 or 2 points - at the end of the day they got 4 batting points from an unwinnable situation. If you are 81-7 against a superior team chasing 250, if you go out swinging you go home with 0 points that can potentially be the difference in relegation and staying up. Blame the league rules that still enables draws - it should be win/lose, with bonus points for chasing teams getting 75% or 90% of the score.
      Obviously you're not gonna do this in a win/lose final, but in a league game if you don't have a number 9/10 good enough to go for it, I don't blame them one bit because 4 points could keep them in the league by the end of it.

    I believe you might get some stick for that comment. BUT I think if you listen to what you said. You did mention that you could of been more aggressive in the field. Which is the key point. Win, lose draw, it’s the same as the pros do it. You have to be good with bat and ball and remember you can still accumulate points and stop the other team picking points up. It makes for a dull game sometimes. But nevertheless it’s all apart of the game.
    Aggressive cricket is something we assume can only happen with the bat. I saw at 70-5 off of 32 that’s 18 overs to score 180ish. 5 wickets you can be aggressive a short leg mid on mid off In and let them go over the top or create indifference with their shot selection.
    Thanks as always for the great content and the fantastic platform you are providing for all us cricket badgers!

    I'm a bit of both, for me it depends purely on the format. If its just win/lose then you've always got to go for the win, but if the potential to grind out a losing draw is there I see no issue in going for it, especially if the batting is the weakness of a team (as is the case with me).

    Well done Gareth and Woodhall, especially Kingy, a former teammate of mine at Timberland back in ancient history. I am fully with your comments about going for the win. If you are going to set a good example for the young players in your club then you should play hard and play to win, even if you get the odd heavy beating in the process. Unfortunately for Nettleham, their skipper Bridgens has always seemed to me to be a selfish kind of cricketer, considering he has a modest record at PL level. Certainly looked like he was batting for his average! Anyway, I will predict a top 4 finish for you guys this season as long as you stay injury free and of course availability.

It keeps both sides interested rather than one side ‘winning’ the game after 2/3 overs or 2/3 wickets down. I have played a hell of a lot of cricket in England and the safas and ozzies in those side never got declaration cricket either 😂 This is why the MCC play declaration cricket for all their outmatches. #spiritofcricket😜

    Interesting point and i get your point. However the opposition might feel like as many extra batting/bowling points they can get. Might help them not get relegated end of the season. I wish English leagues would drop extra points and just do a win is that many points that’s it. To stop teams doing this. But I think it’s a league rules issue not a opposition team and how they choose to get points.

    You have to tempt them out. Bring on joke bowlers, get your fielders in the right spots and toss a few up to them. It's a definite art winning matches like this. With good captaincy it can be done.

    agree with you completely, as a keeper there is absolutely nothing worse than when some fart comes in thinking he's blocking it out like a prime graeme smith to save his team but realistically he's just dangling his bat in front of every single ball which will eventually result in a loss anyways, it's when the awful balls come in and they're still leaving it or just tapping it away, ruins the game, ruins the respect and love both teams have for the amazing cricket we get to see in our lives

  • @vZorbie
    @vZorbie ปีที่แล้ว

    I fully respect your idea on why you think they should go for the score and not play out the overs, sometimes teams when they bowl first they know when the opposition score a high total like you guys did and know they will lose will usually bat out the overs because they know they can't win, I know it sucks that they weren't competitive enough but cricket is cricket and it will happen, especially when the opposition is as inexperienced as that team was, but if course awesome video cheers for the good content 💪💪

      @@canyoucricket Easy to say that when you've got an ex-test player and a country contracted player in your side. Gareth they're 81-7 chasing 250 mate, and they're probs gonna be in a fight to stay up and every point is valuable. What do you expect them to do? Tee off lose points and potentially get themselves into relegation trouble at the end of the season? LCBPL is still a bit behind enabling draws unlike other nearby prems, blame the league not the team if anything

    I don't really get the rant about the other sides "defensive" batting - they finished 125/8 - so they pretty much gave as good as they could after starting badly and being 13/3. How does swinging across the line slogging and getting out in 25 overs help them get a batting line going? Your side was totally dominant - it's up to your team to set attacking fields and go for max points.

    • @canyoucricket
      @canyoucricket  ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear your point and I'm definitely not advocating swinging across the line. However, they had a very talented batsman at the crease for the majority of the innings who could have got them at least a few more batting points if a bit more positive intent was shown.

    Sorry sour grapes! You win, you get the points - do not critise the opposition. They probably did not want to be all out being beaten by 200 plus runs. In the end Woodhall were not good enough to outthink and bowl out the opposition.

    Having played a lot of seasons of premier league cricket some weeks you have a weak side playing against a better team, why should they give you the win when they are weak? Part of the idea of this level of cricket is to be more like 4 day matches. You have to be good enough to bowl them out, that’s your teams responsibility. I’ve been in both scenarios with teams but the rules are there from the start, you know you have to take 10 wickets.
