My wife and I conduct auditions for our church worship team and we always make sure the person auditioning is as prepared and as comfortable as possible. This includes letting them know what songs to practice for at least a week ahead of time. We also make sure they have attended the church's connect class where they learn the mission and vision of the pastor and church and have attended for more than 3 months. We have them play or sing with the tracks on Ableton. We're all volunteers though so I'm sure churches that pay their musicians have to treat it differently.
For electric players specifically id say that another awesome way to be prepared for an audition (or just on Sunday mornings in general) is to learn all the guitar parts as well as any lead lines that are done by keys as well. In my experience if for some reason the keys player can't play the line or just has to fill in something else, electric guitar is usually next in line to fill in that part! (Like the Christ is enough lead line for instance). And same for keys players probably!

I have never heard of a church asked church member to audition, as a singer or musician. New concept to me.... how many folks in your church play instruments or can sing? My experience may 1 or 2 , no need to auditions in my case.
Weird how it’s different based on areas. Some need bass players. Some need guitar players. Some need singers. Some need piano/keyboard players. Few need drummers....🤣 actually hearing a lack of drummers is a first for me but I believe it happens. Some need all thee above....
Im a drummer and i use to play at church growing up and then i move to an other church and you have to audition i dislike that because for me is like ok you have to be really good to worship God they make it seem like this is a concert i feel that appearance shoildnt have to play a role in you wanting to worship God with other musicians. It sucks that discourages alot of people
Carlos Cervantes it is a JOB. It is no different that applying for a secular job. No employer in their right mind would hire someone based solely on a resume. In order to maintain the quality of worship at a church, a good worship leader or pastor will make sure you will be a good fit for the team and church, ultimately making the worship experience better. It is also important that you be skilled at your instrument. Just because someone can “play guitar” or “play drums” doesn’t mean they know how to play a certain style of music, or that their ability level is on par with the level of proficiency a particular church requires. An audition is not meant to discourage, but ultimately the WL has to do what’s best for the team and the church.... and sometimes an audition is a way to weed out the folks that won’t fit.

I would exercise a bit more caution as a leader in how we express our views bro. The afore mentioned qualifications, if we're honest,is where many leaderships criteria is satisfied. Why? The moment someone points out our need everyone of ours, to be different, to be above the worlds standard, you're either legalistic or a pharisaical looney... No my friend it is not like any other job. All this content is good and useful enough to get us through the demands of modern churching. If all we pursue is providing a "good worship experience" in the context of this present culture,... good on ya.. Is it, 'As it is in heaven"???
Why should we chose who can lead worship? We should give everyone a chance and we can never tell how strong they are in their faith. You got to pray on it you can’t just decide on your first impression. It’s a big deal!

Exactly! I'm a keys player and I learn all of the electric guitar lead lines in case of emergency.

Drummers are a dime a dozen. Sometimes it seems like half the people I encounter play drums. GOOD drummers....well....
