Jonty Rhodes was incredibly special. In 1992 during the World Cup he announced his arrival by running out a Pakistani batsman by NOT throwing the ball at the stumps...but by RUNNING AND DIVING at the stumps with ball in hand. They calculated / speculated that Jonty saved 20 runs per batting innings in his fielding position. Not just because of insane acrobattics, but also because he was like a sniper...running out batters like crazy. Runs batsmen would normally take they simply wouldn't dare to if Jonty was there.
Regarding the no ball rule: at the first point of contact with the ground, some part of the bowlers foot needs to be behind the line, if in front of the line or on the line, it is a no ball. It’s slightly different for spinners compared to seam bowlers as seam bowlers plant their foot firmly then follow through with their action. However, for spinners who don’t have as much momentum going through their body, their first point of contact might be the front end of their foot whilst the back half is in the air as their body pivots on their ankle. The umpires will check to see if at that first point of contact with the ground the part of the foot that is in the air would be behind the line or not then judge the no ball
The rule for no ball is on the first contact of the foot on ground some part of the foot needs to be behind the line or crease. The foot can slide or cross the line afterwards. On the line is a noball. The umpires miss the close calls all the time. Thats why now that part is slowly being shifted to the tv umpire. By the way in cricket even for runouts the bat needs to cross the line, on the line or in the air is out. But new regulations say, if the bat has once grounded after the line but bounces up in the air after wards at the time of wickets being disturbed then batsman shall be deemed safe. Line as they say belongs to the umpire.
You can't run when the ball is in Jhonty Rhodes's hand.. his Area of fielding was Backward point and that position is the hardest fielding position in Cricket because batsman slashes hard...And it was a saying that he covers almost 4 meters right left and Above him..sorry for my Bad english 😅
@@lylekruger4864 absolutely they were. I rank Mark Waugh up there too for his overall catching ability. But Symonds is probably the best all round fielder.
Jhonty was an average batsman but he made up with his fielding skills, I remember the first series I watched was between India and south Africa way back in the 90s and the biggest thing I took out of it was that every match jhonty saved around 30-40 runs and it was very frustrating. Mind you where he used to field that position gets balls coming at you around 100 mph sometimes even faster
Jonty Rhodes and Herscelle Gibbs were the perfect fielding partnership, Jonty was more defensive so the ball wouldn't get past him and Herscelle was more attacking so he would create more chances for run outs and catches and were both great batsman. Even Ponting said he hated playing against them because it was hard to score.
Even if Jonty didn’t make runs for us in the game, he would more than make up for it with the amount of runs he saved in the field. He made every kid start practicing dive catches and everyone wanted to field at backward point position. Such a legend for South Africa 👌
The place where jonty fielded is called the point. Since then it has been nicknamed as rhodes point as he was that good. There are some awesome runouts he did too.
Fielding is a very crucial but very often overlooked part of cricket. Teams like SouthAfrica, Australia, New Zealand always produced gun fielders. Teams like India and Pakistan mostly struggled in this area.
Jonty Rhodes was an athlete in every sense of the word. He played for the South African cricket team, but he was also a great field hockey player . He was actually chosen to represent South Africa in field hockey in the 92 Olympics.
16:09 Part of the bowlers foot must land behind the line .. it can land and slide forward it will still be legal..If however the whole foot lands on or past the line then it is a no ball
Jhonty Rhodes is arguably the best fielder. I was a big fan, especially when he dived through the stumps with the ball to effect a run out in the World Cup. Ponting's fielding prowess extended over a longer career where he was brilliant at catching, intercepting and hitting the stumps consistently. Please check out "Punter" Ponting's highlights.
Jonty is famously one of the only players ever to be picked in a major international team predominantly on the basis of his fielding. His batting was ok but far from great (avg 35) but not many other batters would have earned themselves a 50 test career averaging less than 40. However Jonty saved so many runs and created so many wickets with his fielding that he more than made up for his batting faults. He set a new standard for attacking fielding that became the paradigm for everyone who followed
really enjoyed this video, what a legend jonty Rhodes . here is a short video on no ball title is (No Ball | The Laws of Cricket Explained with Stephen Fry )
There are players who specialize at fielding positions. Rhodes made "Point" his kingdom, nothing goes through when he is there. Also check out some of today's greats like Guptil, Dilshan, Pollard, Jadeja, Warner, ABD, Kohli, Stokes....
Cricket has evolved a lot.....fielding is very important in cricket "Catches win you matches".....is an old saying in cricket.....great batsmen can win you matches but great bowling and fielding will definitely win you tournaments.....fielding in cricket is fun....watch some ipl,bbl matches, t20 matches...... the fielding efforts are insane there
Regarding your no ball query Nick, some part of the foot should be behind the line. If it's on the line, they say on line belong to the umpire and eventually he will call it a no ball
For a valid ball, some part of the feet should be behind the line when it lands/touches the ground... Regarding Jonty Rhodes, at that time avg career length was 10-15 yrs. Also, South Africa was not allowed to play Cricket because of Apartheid policy. He started with the team when they started in 1992.
Jonty Rhodes missed some cricket due to apartheid. South Africa was admitted back into international cricket in 1992. Jonty made his test debut in Nov 1992 - South Africa's first test match on home soil since 1970. Jonty made his ODI debut in the first match of the 1992 cricket world cup in Australia. South Africa was originally banned from attending but was admitted at the last minute.
That's why you put your best fielder at backward point! TO save runs, make spectacular catches and execute runouts from drives that produce thick edges.
Jonty Rhodes only has one equal - Ricky Ponting. No one stopped balls like Jonty did, but Ponting came close. Ponting though was much better at hitting the stumps. Other outstanding fielders - Andrew Symonds, Mark Waugh, Allan Border, Steve Smith (Australia), Paul Collingwood (England), Herschelle Gibbs, AB de Villiers, Temba Bavuma (South Africa), Viv Richards, Roger Harper (West Indies), Martin Guptill (New Zealand) Ravi Jadeja (India), Dilshan (Sri Lanka).....
Jonty Rhodes is the guy who made fielding COOL. After he became popular for his fielding, everyone wanted to field like him but no one ever came close. He has been one of the best fielders, if not the best fielder cricket has ever seen. I still remember I used to be so excited to watch a South Africa match just for his fielding. Also watch and react to some of his awesome ground fielding, you ll love it.
The reason for Jonty retiring was he broke his hand in 2003 world Cup Match while attempting a catch. That was the last game he played. He was a pretty good Middle order batsman. th-cam.com/video/J4Z5Jurs9uc/w-d-xo.html
I hadn't checked the comments to see if anyone answered but a ball is considered a no-ball when no part of the bowler's foot is found behind the line when it first lands. You can deliver a ball with your whole foot, half a foot or a small piece of your heel behind the line but a part of the boot must land behind the line once the foot first makes contact with the ground. There are bowlers who's foot slides on deliveries but it is that first point of contact that determines whether the ball is legal or not.
Another comment - catching is definitely another level above in Cricket over Baseball, solely because of the lack of gloves. No doubt. But as you saw for the recent Windies v England Test - dropped catches are relatively common compared to Baseball where its not uncommon for 2B, SS and 3B to field at 0.995 for a season. Also, Baseballers are far superior throwers. Even catchers - picking off runners at second takes a very hard, very accurate throw (Yadier Molina ! What a beast. Is he the best ever ?) The accuracy of SS and 3B at throwing runners out at first as a matter of course still amazes me !
Jonty was an ok Batsman averaging 35 in both ODIs and Test cricket but its not an average of a top player but his fielding made him impossible to drop escpecially in ODI when Run Outs are far more common which is how he played 245 ODIs
For most cricket fans and critics.... Jonty Rhodes is the best Fielder ever .. Period. He is the one who showed the world how it is done... Diving, Sliding, strong throwing arm ,catching and stopping boundaries... He was good at everything...
I was waiting from very long time that when you will react on jhonty Rhodes..as u did may catches videos..but i was waiting for jhonty one.. As i saw your this video on my timeline, i immediately watched it and liked it..i am an indian but jhonty was my all time fav.. we loose many matches because of his fielding.. he was also a very good batsman.. Pls do some more videos on him..
If the foot passes even an inch over the white line, it's a no ball. The way it is described is "some part of the foot has to be on or behind the white line for the delivery to be a legal one"
Fact Johnty Rhodes is the only player to won the man of the match award coming as a substitute fielder(no batting or bowling) for his brilliant catches and runout.
I think the rule for no ball is at least half of your feet should be inside the line... I meant the first contact.. not the follow through. If you feet goes outside the line more than say 3/4 then most of the time it's a no ball. It's umpires call. Yes the umpire misses it also. That's why now-a-days every time there is an out they check with the TV umpire about the no ball.
to be a legal bowl some part of the boot must be behind the line, even if its a very tiny bit its ok. most of the time what happens is that a lot of bowlers foot lands behind the crease but slides away as they deliver the bowl.as long as the some part of the foot LANDS behind the crease it wont be a no bowl.
Awesome reaction guys ❤ Yes, barehand catches are sometimes real painful. Once I blew off my middle finger trying to stop a ball smashed at me, and had to go through a surgery...😅 *Answer to Nick's question:* It's a No ball if the bowler's front foot heel lands just on the line or in front of the line (also called popping crease). It's a fair delivery if the foot heel is behind the line.
cricketers, and kids in general are taught from a young age to catch with soft hands, you learn to lead the ball into your hands. go with the direction, fingers out straight at a 90 degree angle to the direction of the ball's travel to avoid broken fingers, as an ex player i can tell you we spend many full days of training just to learn the art of catching high balls, or ground level bullets
Fielding is very important part of Cricket too, Nick, Gabe I really want u guys to check out Brendon Mccullum, one my favourite batsman. He is a destructive player that hits 95miles bowls to sixes for fun.
The hardest part of cricket for me is not facing the fast bowlers, but be fielding close in to the batsman. You guys need to see some of the catches those fielders take and like you say without a glove.
15:33 You can't pass the line. some part of the foot has to touch the line. The bowler s foot has to "land" after the jump with some part of the foot behind the line. it is ok if it crosses the line during the delivery.
For a delivery to be legal, some part of the foot has to LAND behind the line, even after landing if it slides infront it's not considered a no ball. If it lands on the line, it's still a no ball, we say the line belongs to the umpire.
2:36 😂 I do hate it but you're wrong about one more thing that baseball was created by Americans to have their own thing coz that was just the way baseball was promoted at the expense of Cricket, till then it was apparently the most popular sport in both US & Canada (from what I read), both also played the first ever International Cricket match in 1844 (match organised in 1843 apparently didn't took place due to some confusions about the scheduling) & that match was also apparently the first international sports event in modern times even before modern Olympics. Baseball also came from England & the oldest written reference to baseball is found in the 1755 diary of a Surrey man William Bray (I first saw this on a clip of a baseball documentary made by some American baseball fans looking into the sport's history, clip was on mlb website & probably is still there). I do believe baseball was likely developed from Cricket (despite the rounders claim) & I even once saw a video (that youtube video saved in a playlist appears to be gone, probably removed) where after a tournament I think at Broward County Cricket Stadium a local American politician (may be mayor or some council member) said it was developed by kids on English beaches trying to play Cricket but since the ball wasn't bouncing well they bowled mostly Full Tosses which resulted in baseball like pitching (pitching itself in Cricket means hitting the ball on the pitch). This 10 mins video doesn't explain everything but it's still good, The Forgotten and Lost Greatness of American Cricket th-cam.com/video/Ps-rxP30fF4/w-d-xo.html Fielding has always been a specialised field in Cricket & that's why the best ones like Jonty Rhodes stand out. Fielding now due to t20 Cricket is said to be improving since saving every single run means a lot. But I'll accept baseballers definitely have superior throwing skills. Still the best aspect of Cricket for me is Bowling & no comparison exists in baseball.
Jonty was a great batsman as well his career was a bit short because South Africa was banned for international cricket for a long time because of apartheid and when they were admitted back it was already halfway through a lot of players careers.
When apartheid was abolished in south Africa for the first time all races came together to support cricket. In south Africa there is 4 races blacks , whites, coloureds and indians First time south Africans was cheering for cricket like citizens cos cricket was viewed a white man's game. Indians here are the largest non resident indians outside india the British brought us here in 1860 as slaves. Today indians make up 40 percent of doctors and engineers here . Lots of love from South Africa.
For at least a decade there was an argument about whether Jonty Rhodes or Ricky Ponting was the best fielder. South Africans say Rhodes, Australian's say Ponting. Here is a video of Ponting's best catches, you guys decide. BTW runs outs is where Ponting really stood out. Ponting hit the stumps a lot more often than Rhodes. th-cam.com/video/U423wOQVM2c/w-d-xo.html
Unlike baseball ring fielders in cricket can not be considered as defence men, reason being they are in attacking positions, i,e to impose on the batsmen that they are there to get'em out (catches/ runouts) & not to defend runs. Especially the one's really close in or the ones standing behind the stumps usually on the off side (called Slips). Fielders outside the ring are there to defend runs. Hence can be considered as defence men. Though Jhonty was always or mostly in attacking positions to enforce wickets. And As cricket is much more strategic sport, hence the field positions also become subjective to the situation the game is in.
It opposite in cricket now a days if you are not good in fielding/defense even if good in batting/bowling you are benched, previously you could have gotten away with it. Jonty Rhodes is a legend anywhere in the world if you want to give some one credit for there fielding you just call him Jonty Rhodes, there isnt even a 2nd option here, i am not kidding he was so far ahead of everyone, he was specially famous for his long diving fielding and catches.
*When bowler land his leg some part of leg needs to be behind the line if its just on the line its a noball...you can keep the leg fully behind but not behind the stumps...this WIvsEng match was the only match i have seen where 3 times player was not out because of no ball its happens once or twice but not thrice😢*
Batting wins you matches, Bowling wins you series, Fielding wins you world cup Sometimes u threw yourself or your arm at the ball to catch nd hoping it sticks, sometimes it does stick
South Africans in general like Australia were brilliant in the field. This is what set us apart in the past buy yhebother counties are equally if jot better at us today. Hence south Africa loosong some ground in world rankings.
*Mostly ppl are average but there are always some guys who are extraordinary at fielding...Jonty Rhodes was that person...he was so good at it. these days he is never idle he is always hired becoz fielding in Cri is very important and lots of team are pathetic at fielding Jonty is always hired by some IPL team and he stays mostly in India....he named her daughter India coz she was born there n Jonty is mostly like to be found in India only if not South Africa*
Don't worry too much about defense and defending...just don't say throwing. Bowling is preferred, but you can say pitching. We're pretty good with baseball terms and we understand that you will use those terms.
I have watched few baseball catches. And it seems to me that, since players try to catch the ball with one hand only sometimes some easy catches become very difficult. And most of the time their balance is off. If they had gone for their other hand or both hand it would have been better. I think in baseball chances of getting hurt due to imbalance is very high.
He was good but difference is you comparing him to greats are usually have longer careers. Regards to noballs the bowlers must have some part their foot behind the line on first contact to the ground.
Ricky Ponting is at par with Jonty Rhodes or maybe a touch better. Yes Jonty raised the fielding standards in the mid 90s but this man Ponting has done it all from taking incredible catches to brilliant runouts and be it at any position from slips , silly point to hitting the stumps from the outfield. Not taking anything away from Rhodes but Ponting's the best allround fieldsman imo.
He is the only player to win man of the match award as a substitute fielder, he took 7 catches as a substitute fielder

Hi Jonty Rhodes is from my home town cape Town South Africa. What a humble guy he also suffers from epilepsy.
Any part of the foot has to be "behind the line" if it is even on the line it will be called a no ball

What many people don't realise either, is that Jonty suffers from epilepsy. Quite the inspiration for overcoming challenges.
The whole foot has to cross the line to be no ball

The hardest part of cricket for me is not facing the fast bowlers, but be fielding close in to the batsman. You guys need to see some of the catches those fielders take and like you say without a glove.
15:33 You can't pass the line. some part of the foot has to touch the line. The bowler s foot has to "land" after the jump with some part of the foot behind the line. it is ok if it crosses the line during the delivery.
The greatest fielder ever without a doubt !!
JayaPonbalan Jp i would argue viv richards, he was supernatural in the field
This 10 mins video doesn't explain everything but it's still good,

Fielding has always been a specialised field in Cricket & that's why the best ones like Jonty Rhodes stand out.
This catches are not his best there are many more better ones to be honest. You should definitely check out his run outs as well.
I might be wrong but as per my knowledge, Baseball has evolved from a British game called Rounders.
Pls reacts to jhonty's best runouts.....those r mind blowing
When apartheid was abolished in south Africa for the first time all races came together to support cricket. In south Africa there is 4 races blacks , whites, coloureds and indians First time south Africans was cheering for cricket like citizens cos cricket was viewed a white man's game. Indians here are the largest non resident indians outside india the British brought us here in 1860 as slaves. Today indians make up 40 percent of doctors and engineers here . Lots of love from South Africa.
Do a reaction video of Jacque Kallis one of the best South African all rounders ever
When the foot crosses the line completely, that means no part of the foot should be behind the line then it is called "no ball"
Cricket is also difficult because the ball not only swings in the air it also does after hitting the ground making it impossible to hit.
Lads check out the Ben Stokes catch from last year’s cricket World Cup v South Africa - it is INSANE
Some part of foot(heel) must be behind line, if heel is on the line then it's a no ball...
Jonty's runouts are even better!
*When bowler land his leg some part of leg needs to be behind the line if its just on the line its a noball...you can keep the leg fully behind but not behind the stumps...this WIvsEng match was the only match i have seen where 3 times player was not out because of no ball its happens once or twice but not thrice😢*
Batting wins you matches,
Bowling wins you series,
Fielding wins you world cup
Sometimes u threw yourself or your arm at the ball to catch nd hoping it sticks, sometimes it does stick
The technique of catching is simple never go with hard hands your hands must act like a cushion
Don't worry too much about defense and defending...just don't say throwing. Bowling is preferred, but you can say pitching. We're pretty good with baseball terms and we understand that you will use those terms.
You have to checkout about ravinder jadeja....he is currently the best in the world
In cricket feilding is becoming more and more important...everyday in cricket.....unlike baseball...
The best fielder in cricket right now is India's Ravindra Jadeja
He was good but difference is you comparing him to greats are usually have longer careers. Regards to noballs the bowlers must have some part their foot behind the line on first contact to the ground.
Ricky Ponting is at par with Jonty Rhodes or maybe a touch better. Yes Jonty raised the fielding standards in the mid 90s but this man Ponting has done it all from taking incredible catches to brilliant runouts and be it at any position from slips , silly point to hitting the stumps from the outfield. Not taking anything away from Rhodes but Ponting's the best allround fieldsman imo.
keep the work up
It only hurts when you drop it.
watch paul collingwood's fielding tutorials
Jonty Rhodes is god of fielding
He applied for the fielding coach of Indian team but was not selected for some reason..
Watch 22 spectacular sixes of jonthy rhodes
Some part of the bowlers foot should be behind the line at first contact.
Jonty named his daughter name "India".
