    As long as you apply pressure to the top round while inserting the en bloc you will not get bitten. The moment you release pressure the bolt can drive the round into the chamber and get you; so you better get your fingers the heck out of dodge.

      Traditionally one uses the hand (like a knife hand or karate chop fashion) to sweep back the charging handle as the en block clip is inserted to avoid the dreaded "M1 thumb" or "Garand thumb" as your moniker says . Or at least that is the way the USMC taught in the late 50s early 60s.

    • @h8GW
      @h8GW 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you weren't using your thumb to hold the bolt back by pushing in the clip at its rear?

  • @GarandThumb

    I use basic M2 ball which is a specific loading for the M1 Garand. The Civilian Marksmanship Program sells this ammo at very reasonable prices. Around .50 or so cents a round.

      Just payed $2.00 a round for my first 100 .30-06 rounds to feed my first M1 Garand, but at least they're 150gr with pressures good for the M1. Was doing my Garand TH-cam thing when I saw a 9 year old comment of yours on a Nutnfancy video upping the Garand for Florida climates. Feel like I saw some kind of esoteric side of gun TH-cam now.

  • @GarandThumb
    @GarandThumb  12 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Dummy round typical refers to a round rendered inert by removal of powder and primer. In this case these are simply snap caps. Which are designed with rubbed primers to deaden the impact of the firing pin to prolong the life of the firing pin during repeated dry firings. Conversely I use them to practice loading my garand so that I don't have to chamber live rounds in the comfort of my home.

    .30-06 (7.62x63 if you like it in metric notation more). Although if you reload for it stick with bullet weights of 170 grains and below with IMR 4895.

  • @GarandThumb
    @GarandThumb  11 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The caliber is .30-06, otherwise known as .30 Cal. The diameter of the bullet/slug itself is .308 inches or 7.8mm with a typical weight of 150 grains (10 g).

    @ptmccain Where I live Carbine matches differ from Rifle matches in the length of engagement. While rifle matches are typically 50 -600 yards, Carbine courses typically indicate targets closer than 50 yards with movement and reloading thrown in there. Thanks for commenting!

  • @GarandThumb

    They are dummy rounds/inert rounds/snap caps, they have a rubber primer to absorb the impact of the firing pin.

      Eight military round thirty ghost clip magazine.

  • @GarandThumb
    @GarandThumb  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Not sure I quite understand the first question. When the round is ignited the gun powder burns and the expanding gases propel the slug out of the barrel. At the same time there is a port drilled into the front of the barrel so that some of these expanding gas can be tapped off to drive a gas pistol backwards which then subsequently ejects a spent cartridge. Not completely familiar with the NY law. But if the ban is nothing over 7 rounds then the Garand would be banned. Which is a damn shame.

    • @garrettzkool63
      @garrettzkool63 ปีที่แล้ว

      old ass reply, but technically the internal magazine in a garand only ever holds 7, it cant fit 8, so its like a permanent 7+1 capacity. not sure if thatr helps but could maybe be argued that its acceptable.

    We were taught to keep the heel of our hand in front of the op rod handle as you push the top of the clip down with your thumb. After the clip clicks, simply raise your hand upwards; sometimes the op rod requires a love tap forward…

    One trick is to load your clips so when inserted the top round is on the right. This allows for a shorter reach with your loading hand assuming you are loading from the right with your right hand. Works either way but a tad easier.

  • @thegr8pulido
    @thegr8pulido 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Garand is the name of John C. Garand, the Canadian-American man who designed the rifle. He actually pronounced his name the way it is pronounced in the video, so although the pronunciation is not the common way, it is not wrong.

  • @GarandThumb
    @GarandThumb  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It shouldn't happen. But if it does it is quite painful and can bust your thumb.

  • @eogg25
    @eogg25 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    before you go on guard duty you have an inspection by the officer of the guard and when he stands in front of you, you quickly open up the Garand breech and as soon as his hand moves you let go of the rifle. so he can grab it then he gives it back to you and you close the breech. I did it many times and never got my finger grabbed by the mechanism. it wont happen if you are trained not to let it happen. the rifle has low recoil because it is about 8.5 pounds. good rifle.

    @SASRCaptainClifford If you have the bolt locked back properly, it can't move forward until you hear the "click." As long as you keep pressing down on the top round in the clip, the bolt will not feed it into the chamber and can't give you the dreaded M1 thumb. There is no need to hold the op rod back with the edge of your hand.

  • @phprofYT
    @phprofYT 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Place back of hand on charging handle as you push in the clip. That works for me every time. Use mine for hunting.

  • @videodistro
    @videodistro 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh, another video poster - son of a vet who used the M1 - showed to use the bottom of the right hand against the bolt release when putting in the clip. He said he learned to do it this way from his dad. I suppose most in the military ended up learning their "own" way or that of a mentor (sarge!) so it would be interesting to see what the weapons manual says on loading.

    • @silvermediastudio
      @silvermediastudio 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The original manual of arms includes using the meat of your right hand to hold the oprod handle back, so even if it releases while your thumb is in the action, the bolt will be restrained.

    It wouldn't work. In the M1, since you can't access the magazine without the bolt fully to the rear, you'd eject any rounds you already had chambered. You can't depress the rounds in the magazine in order to get the bolt over the top round so it can close on a round you dropped into the chamber because there isn't room.

    question. I bought a Springfield Armory/National?? 1970s M1 repro, but it doesnt load on an 8 round clip. It loads on 7 just fine, but it will not load on an 8 round clip whether the first round is on the left or right, and the casings as far back as they can go. Im about 90% sure my enblocs are GI spec, but they are brand new and i have currently broken in two of them. IT seems that the round is getting hung up on the metal part of the receiver that guides the round up and into the chamber. Is it a worn recoil spring? It is really frustrating me now. In order to get it to chamber, i literally have to PULL on the charging handle to get it to chamber, but it scrapes the living hell out of the 2nd round in the process. THEN when i try to pull back on the charging handle, i literally have to take a hammer to the handle to get it to pull back, but if i load 7 i can manipulate the handle manually without issue (yes i am using blue dummy rounds during all this)

      Fulton Armory uses the old receiver and build around that. They use complete USGI parts except for the barrel and stock, and some other minor parts. With CMP and Fulton Armory, you're guaranteed they don't use the nasty welded receivers that float around.
      The Garand receiver is very hard and expensive to make. No company wants to do it because there isn't a big market for it, and it would cost too much. Some companies still make M14/M1A receivers but they don't quite follow the original blue print for it. The original M14 machine was sold to China, and before the 95AWB, you could have gotten your hands on a really nice Norinco receiver which was the closet thing to the real M14 that is made during "modern" times. The receiver required a lot of work since the Chinese didn't really get the process down and just pumped out as much as they could.

    • @GolfFoxtrotCharlie-gfc
      @GolfFoxtrotCharlie-gfc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      CMP has them starting at $600 on up. Obviously the higher the price the higher the quality, but the $600 range is still fine, they shoot, just dont look so pretty. If you go to 2 sites called ammo garand, and garand gear you can buy brand new barrels and virtually every part for them and bring one to life.
