He wasn't talking about practice at all, nor his practice habits, he was wondering why he has to answer questions about practice to the media. He made himself available for questions from the media, and all that was asked was 'practice' questions, so he wondered why he had to stand up there and answer such silly questions. Ie. "Why are we talking about practice when we should be talking about games." His rant was purely against the media's bias.

If I remember correctly, AI said something like, "I'm the MVP of the league, and you don't get to that point by not practicing hard." And I'm guessing the inference he made is that if he needs some time off, then he's obviously put the work in and deserves to decide how he can best use his body: similar to "load management" nowadays, or even Dennis Rodman taking off to Las Vegas in "The Last Dance".

Allen Iverson was totally right for standing up for himself when it comes to the media or the press
Their soul purpose is to tell lies and make up stories about someone that is not even hundred percent true
They literally tried to push Allen Iverson over the edge.
After he'd just lost the game and lost his best friend who was Murdered. But he kept his cool and spoke his mind. I love that about this guy he doesn't let people push his buttons.
The media had no empathy whatsoever towards him or cared how he felt at that moment. Neither did they ask him one question about his friend. it was sad to ear them laughing when he kept on saying "Practice "over and over again because I think he was lost for words about that issue.
Anyway it made me very emotional when I watched the whole press conference it got really emotional and sad for me when he started talking about his daughter and what he had to deal with after the game was over and what he had to go home and hear from his own daughter asking questions about him being traded. When he was the only star athlete on the Sixers that whole entire Season
That whole N.B.A press conference shouldn't have happened but it did.
And this was probably one of the reasons why Allen Iverson choose to walk away from the N.B.A without him winning a Championship like he deserved because all the other accolades don't mean anything without a Championship period.

Yes, but Allen was referring to the fact that they were asking him about practice during a press conference. A press conference should be about discussing games...not practice...is where he was coming from. Many kids (he claimed) misunderstood him thinking he was indicating that he shouldn’t need to practice (like others since he is so good), and that was an unfair assumption on their part.

I remember the day this happened. I was 14 at the time and when it first happened I really though it was much a do about nothing. Meaning I didn't understand why such a big deal was made of the whole situation. I still don't think it was a huge deal. The year prior A.I. was as close to a one man team as possible in the NBA leading that 76ers team to the finals and then got a game from that dominant Lakers team. I wouldn't call this a rant as it was A.I. just calling it like it was at the time.

I watched the entire press conference. He sounded genuinely hurt. If you listen closely he sounded like someone wasn't being fully honest with him behind the scenes about the trade rumors, causing him to have to deal with the matter publicly. If he's a franchise player, he's thinking they can be straight with him if they want to trade him and not make him look bad in order to do it. In other words the talk about his practice habits was a smokescreen, as the team would have been criticized for trading him if he wasn't the problem. But I think he was trying to show integrity and not throw anyone specific under the bus.

It’s obvious that Coach Larry Brown back then wouldn’t have known how to handle today’s NBA with a certain limit on training camps and team meetings and what have you. It’s not about being lazy in terms of not preparing for the season. It’s more about protecting our superstars from injuries and fatigue so that the NBA can give us a show week in and week out. I understand that older legends like Oscar Robinson and the great Celtics teams and Lakers teams would scoff at not having as many practices as they did back then but we’re obviously in a different age now where we have to be more “protective” of our athletes otherwise we’ll be seeing a lot of career-threatening injuries and that will hurt the league to a degree.

This is media ladies and gentlemen. Media is surface level and often times racist to black athletes. Most of media was typically white-male dominant. During that time, there were writers and reporters who loved nothing more but to create narratives of the black male professional athlete. They've always painted this bold picture like they are not educated and thugs. No different from your "stereotypical black man" that's painted. A.I. tried to tell them he is human. This from professional all the way down to your local newspapers. It was worse in the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. It was never hard to see. ESPN is to blame as well. But this what they do and have done for forever. Why as a black man does he always to try and explain to white men that he is human? It is because we were never depicted as such since the beginning of time and slavery.

His practice rant (coming from a guy who understands hood dialect) he’s saying that why are we not talking about the game but practice? He references the fact that he lost his friend… shouldn’t a franchise player at least get a pass when he’s having a difficult time? Obviously one doesn’t get that good at that size by not practicing. Derrick rose is also another story that shows a small guy shouldn’t go too hard all the time because the body won’t hold up when you really need him. And look what happened because Tom made the bulls practice for extended period of times. And iverson output was far more than even rose. How could the man be knocked for a practice or two when he still went out there and played the finals with 15 fractures? The dude could never get a break and he maxed out. True legend

Why does the nba play so many games anyways? Shouldn't we have a season that's just the playoffs but 1/3 as many games?

AI didn’t need to practice to be a HOFer. We talking about practice. I think kyrie iriving would need practice talking about practice. He doesn’t talk to the media and you can say he should retire if he always wants to take personal leave. AI wasn’t a champion but he had the heart of a champion. Heart of a champion talking about practice. *We’re talking about practice*

Don’t condone the behavior of Allen Iverson by defacing his coaching staff. Gary Payton said they were out drinking and they talked about practice and he said that his coach didn’t let him practice at the time
