A very informative video you've made. Really enjoyed it. While I'm glad that regional industries, especially Malayalam cinema, are getting the national importance and relevance that eluded them in the pre-Baahubali phase, I feel that we all sell Hindi Cinema extremely short. To be honest, I feel Bollywood has been the favourite punching bag for both masses and classes since very long, reaching an all time worse post SSR's demise.
While people rightfully call out the Hindi Film Industry for producing mediocre content, they conveniently forget that all other film industries in the world also produce bad content on a consistent basis. It is just that their bad films get camouflaged due to being confined to the regional audience. While even the best Hindi films of any decade since Indian Cinema's inception is talked about only among hardcore cinephiles and they are classified as 'underrated' in comparison to films with bigger budgets/stars.
Another problem I've seen is that 99% film critics and online reviewers while making comparisons on Bollywood vis-a-vis regional industries tend to do so by comparing the worst of the former to the best of the latter. Is it fair to compare films like 'Pathaan', 'Jawan', 'Dabangg', 'Happy New Year', 'Rowdy Rathore', 'Bade Miyan Chote Miyan' and their ilk with movies like 'Kumbalangi Nights', '96', 'Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam', 'Jallikattu', and their ilk?
You have rightly called out the audiences' preference for star-driven movies due to wanting escapism from harsh realities in their personal and professional life as a major reason for mediocrity thriving for a consistent period of time, but at the same time, pls also highlight, in future videos, the outstanding work of other great actors not only from regional but Hindi Cinema as well.
Some of the best Indian films of the 21st century have been from Hindi like 'Sardar Udham', 'The Lunchbox', 'Haider', 'Tumbbad', 'Aankhon Dekhi', 'Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota', 'Ship of Theseus', 'Three of Us', 'GoW', 'Raman Raghav 2.0', 'LSD', 'Udaan', 'Ugly, 'Judgemental Hai Kya', 'Titli', and many more. In terms of content, Malayalam Cinema has definitely flexed its muscles in the past decade with great new wave movies like 'Kumbalangi Nights', 'Great Indian Kitchen', 'Joji', 'Drishyam', Lijo Jose Pellissery movies, 'Rorschach' etc. to name a few, it needs to be mentioned that they too had seen a decline in quality content for nearly two decades from mid-90s to 2000s where artistic stuff took a complete backseat as all its stars shifted to commercial-driven, formulaic fare where the larger-than-life hero beat up 100 people all by himself, romanced the girl, and saved the day.
While you can find many channels declaring Bollywood cinema as finished, passe, think of the past, and hailed South Cinema as the 'new Bollywood', I would request you to go different and highlight the 'avant-garde' cinema of Hindi Movies that are no way inferior to what Malayalam Cinema has produced since 2010s. I specifically mention Malayalam because it has definitely been consistent in the past decade in terms of outstanding content, story-driven movies, while Bollywood has been consistent since the inception of Cinema in India.
Just because the commercial, masala movies hog all the limelight due to the dichotomy of North audiences and media coverage, as you rightly mentioned, the 'Malayalam-level' content from Bollywood gets totally neglected, except for the odd mention of 'Top 10 "underrated" movies in Bollywood', while regional cinema gets all the accolades for the phenomenal content they churn out (rightfully so), their more mediocre and dogshit stuff gets brushed under the carpet.
Pardon this long paragraph, but I'm just expressing my concerns regarding this sometimes unfair belligerence on Hindi Cinema as a whole, when in fact it has been the most consistent film industry of India when it comes to dishing out movies that cover opposite ends of the spectrum: 'cinematic masterpieces' and 'hot-dumpster fire'.

Thank you for your thoughts on the Hindi cinema vs Malayalam cinema topic, very articulately put and fully agreed! In my future videos I will try to cover the Bollywood vs Mollywood debate, definitely more light needs to be thrown on the consistency aspect of films in both the industries.

Dude you are in some sort of lala land. Malayalam cinema is consistent since mid 80s(since Bug Ms) came into picture. They were parts of gems in 80s,90s and in 2000s. At least one film either of them were part of. What you mean Malayalam consitent only in last decade?

    • @thegoodgirl3382
      @thegoodgirl3382 23 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

As a malayali, I'd say this is the worst phase of malayalam cinema with commercial side of movies completely camouflaged for content which is neither good all the time. 90s was the golden Era of Mollywood. 2000s is good too considering good actors and though repetitive but engaging scripts. Know before you talk please

@@ReelRealReflect Thank you for taking my comments in the right context. I too consider myself a movie lover, especially Indian Cinema, for many reasons. I'm in the tiny minority of Indians that consider any movie from Indian Cinema as my own, unlike the majority of the population for whom the cinema/actors of the region they grew up in is the 'best', 'greatest', 'end all be all', while movies/actors from other Indian regions is 'crap'.
I know I will get a lot of vitriol from regional fans that will see me as a 'Malayalam cinema hater', while those who read my comments from top to bottom will take it in the right spirit, as you have done. Pls make more videos on Assamese, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, and Odian Cinema, as well. Hellaro (2019) is one of the best Indian films that I've seen in a while, a Gujarati movie that should've been sent to the Oscars instead of 'Gully Boy'.
'Dhuin' and 'Gamak Ghar', two Maithili language films, too are among the best of Indian movies that can give international cinema a run for its money, as is 'Aatmapamphlet' from Marathi, released last year. I urge you to watch all these movies to discover the gems of Indian Cinema that is in no way shape or form inferior to the best of American/European or any cinema of the world.
I feel when our own people start appreciating the cinema of our land from other regions, instead of endlessly fighting amongst one another in a futile effort to prove 'their' cinema industry is the best, we'll be rid of this deep-rooted inferiority complex born from centuries of Colonial era hangover that everything from the West is a benchmark/superior, while anything from our own country, outside of their region, is 'bullshit' and something to be frowned upon.

@@TheNorwayMachan007 Thanks for your comment. If you've read my post from top to bottom without skipping anything, you would realize that I was talking on the consistency of good/bad films from all film industries in India. Where have I said that Malayalam Cinema produced great stuff only from the 2010s? Just so you should know, I'm well-aware of the golden era of Malayalam movies began in the early 80s and lasted till mid 90s.
My post was simply calling out the unnecessary hate and vitriol to Hindi Cinema from those who hail regional cinema as way superior. It is for those who think that Hindi Cinema can never in a million years match up to Malayalam Cinema in terms of content, while the actual truth is completely different. If you belong to this category, then its natural for you to be stung from my aforementioned post.
However, if you're among the select few of our great and diverse country, who love great cinema from our nation, irrespective of its region, then you shouldn't have any problem in accepting that all film industries produce good and bad content. Malayalam Cinema has produced great stuff with its golden era being much later than Hindi i.e. the 80s and 90s with a decline in quality during 2000s. The new renaissance began in 2010s.

Fahadh and Irffan are two gems, but the things that Mohanlal as an actor have done in the span of his career in Indian cinema is unmatched. I think all the comments will continue to reassure you that.
Same goes for both Mammootty and Kamal Haasan, setting the bars so high from the 80s, over 50 years of dominating their own domain of acting. Redfining themselves everytime.
I believe Fahadh will be one of them, but he has still got to do a lot when compared to the others.

Just a shy guy with immense talent to pour every emotion known to man on screen. He oozes charisma, charm and just nails role like it was ment only for him. He does this to every movie he does. I loved this video. India doesn't have a very cine literate audience which is why bad or mediocre acting is celebrated even today. Videos like these should reach all people so that we can create a better audience for our films. Also this video showed my how underappreciated Mohanlal and Mammootty are in Indian cinema. Their body of work and calibre is unparalleled. I'm not saying this because I'm a malayali but as a film lover. Mohanlal at his peak is the greatest acting talent our country has ever produced. I love each and everyone mentioned in the above video but even FAFA post maheshinte prathikaram reminded malayalis of mohanlal in his younger days. You can find videos of directors saying the same. Mohanlal has done films like vanaprastham where he plays an impoverished kathakali artist to an Alzheimer's patient in thanmathra. His range as perfomer is yet to be matched. Check out Karnabharam ( sanskrit drama ) the acting there is totally different when compared to screen acting. He's not a trained actor in the traditional sense. He never attended ftii or nsd. Also a lot of people tend to under value the ability to pull of comedy. Thats where mohanlal excels over the above mentioned actors. It's true that in the past decade he hasn't done anything worth mentioning. But man mohanlal from 1985 to 2010 was pure magic.

Appreciate your work brother. Hope you do well. It's quite sad and embarrassing that people up north don't have a clue about Mammootty and Mohanlals work. 400+ films in multiple languages, numerous national state and filmfare awards yet they are so underappreciated. They are a prime reason why FAFA can do what he does now.
The day we are able to form an indian audience for our different language cinema is the day Indian cinema will be a force to reckon with. I'm genuinely done with non hindi films being termed as regional cinema. Lets celebrate kumbalangi nights, hellaro village rockstars, sardhar udham, super deluxe etc with the same enthusiasm and spirit. I'd suggest three films each of these legends with completely different characters in each, and then you may assess on your own where Fahad stands compared to them(across generations):
      Mohanlal: Thazhvaram(1990), Iruvar(1988), Nadodikkattu(1987)
      Mammootty: Vidheyan(1994), Bhoothakannadi(1997), Pranchiyettan and the Saint(2010) (or Mathilukal(1990))
      Kamal Haasan: Mahanadhi(1994), Nayakan(1987), Pushpaka Vimana(1987)
(Not sure if these are available on hotstar or youtube with subtitles, but these are the suggestions)

Our lengendary actors have already shown what they are capable of, and when we read the title once more "Best actor in India today" FaFaa truely deserve the stance to be in the top list with Ranbir, Manoj, Rajkumar, Vikram, Vijay Sethupathi, etc (just mentioned a few). FaFaa already breaked out of language barriers he will do more in the coming years.
When we gets to the list of top senior actors currently alive that will be some thing like this - Mohanlal, Mammootty, Kamal Haasan, & Amitabh Bachchan.

There's a whole unending list of actors from Malayalam, uncelebrated and unknown to the rest of India, starting from the late 70's. For instance, consider watching Kannezhuthi Pottum Thottu, Kireedam, Sandhesham, Nadodikkattu, Ustad Hotel to know the range of Thilakan, who came from a theatre background. Acting powerhouse he was. Similarly, the actress Sukumari. Neither of them known beyond Kerala or at the most Tamil Nadu.
Similarly Bharath Gopi, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Sankaradi etc. If you could search for the imdb list of classic Malayalam movies from the Golden Age of Malayalam movies(late 70's to mid 90's), you might stumble upon and get familiar with these names.

Most great actors have standout performances in specific movies, often from a peak period in their careers. When asked to suggest the best performances of their favorite actors, people typically recommend older films. However, in the case of Mammootty, you can simply show his latest movie, "Bramayugam." That's the difference between Mammootty and other actors, because he consistently delivers performance-oriented movies every year.

There has always been great actors in Malayalam cinema. Sathyan was a legend - at a period when loud dramatic histrionics were the norm, he was subtle, restrained and studied. Then there is the national award winner P.J. Anthony. Ask any major Malayalam star like Mammootty or Mohanlal and they will tell you - Bharath Gopi, Tilakan, Nedumudi Venu and Murali were the best. Those who came from comedic and minor roles also shone later on - Jagathi Sreekumar, Shankaradi, Oduvil Unnikrishnan, Mala, Kuthiravattom Pappu, Innocent, Mammukoya, Kalabhavan Mani, Indrans...
And why when you say "Actors" you have negated the female kind?
Sharadha, Urvashi, kpaca Lalitha, Revathi, Manju Warrior, Monisha, Jayabharathi...
THERE ARE TOO MANY SUPERB ACTORS IN MALAYALAM MOVIES
The industry stands miles above the rest of the country in excellence. IT IS JUST THAT *YOU* had not realized the fact.
It is also testament to why Fahad Fasil will not put on airs and declare himself as the crowned badhushah of acting kingdom.

I think I wanna say mohanlal acting never feels he's putting efforts to do acting its feels like iam watching some real person
With fahad it's different sometimes feels like watching real person sometimes we feel he's putting efforts so it's not flawless .
Clearly we can see this in joji
In climax the way he smile to hide his sadness and helpness to do what he wanted to do but he can't do that disappointment, hopelessness ,sadness are clearly visible in his smile
    Before this scene also great
And Another scene where his dad tries to kill joji after that incident he comes to the canal that emotional dissatisfaction, sadness and anger the way he underplays effectlessly so beautiful
These two scenes where he is pretty real to the acting
Another scene joji dad tries to warn joji he puts his hand on joji chest that very beginning that is also great
But other scenes I felt he is putting efforts
In aavesham most of the time he is real in acting same goes to trance
I would say his most realistic acting belongs to malik not fully but some parts
Especially where he talks to diliesh pothe scene with tired angry face and finding difficult to breath
And when his son dies before and after scene .
But both has so much charisma in their acting even if they do Norma acting it feels special to me.
And both these guys do lot with their eyes and both guys do conflicted emotions with their smile .

    Mohanlal is natural
Kamal hassan is method acting. They both can do a dancing role. They have done it.
Irfan khan is great no doubt. Vijay sethupathi is also natural. Fahadh, rajkumar rao, vicky kaushal are method acting. Paresh ji, nasirudeen ji, pankaj kapur are great.

Thrimurthies of Indian cinema- Mammootty, Mohanlal and Kamal Haasan. Doesnt matter which order you place them, all the three have set standards the others have to live up to. Fafa is reaching there and has time to prove his worth.

If Ranbir pulls of Ramayan with conviction. He will become the greatest actor of Indian cinema with great range.

Fahad is a great actor only for Gen z kids. He could never hold a character through the movie. Every now and then he could make you snap out of the movie . He keeps on reminding you that this is an enactment when watching his movies. Also he gives too many expressions for a simple scene (which many people consider as great) when you just have to behave. It is a shame when people bring up his name and forget to mention both the 'big Ms' ( Mohanlal and Mamooty) of Malayalam cinema when talking about the quality actors. Fahad is just an actor by profession . Never in his dreams can he pull off the characters Mohanlal has done just in his 20s or in Mammootty in his peak . These so called reviewers like Bhardwaj and all rate Fahad as the greatest actor of the country. As a malayali it is so irritating to say the Name of Fahad in the same breath when you say Mohanlal and Mammootty as great actors Appreciate you for addressing Mohanlal and bring him in the thumbnail .

Thank you for the comment! And you’re welcome 🙏🏽. That’s an interesting take on Fahadh’s acting, never came across this criticism before. However, I still believe he has the potential to become legendary with more experience(maturity) and if he is fortunate enough to do movies of the same kind(substance) Mohanlal and Mammootty did in the 80s. We might witness greatness in the coming years and I look forward to it.

Haha I bet he never wanted to. Because he never can . If you carefully look through his filmography it is very clear that he always chooses characters that have some grey shades. Eccentric characters!. His character will be mostly psychopaths , robbers, Freud . He never does a genuine well defined character role. What he wants to do is make a smoke screen between his character and the audience. Let him do a proper character role without the close up cameras, effects and heavy BGMs and get some appreciation from the general public and critics . I bet he will disappoint you

@someonelikeyou6138 Ofcourse! And that’s a nuanced observation I must say. How about his portrayal in Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum? Also I believe BGM and close ups are part of evolved filmmaking, I wonder if high budget film will steer away from these aspects for the sake of art. In any case, let’s see what the man can actually accomplish with talent + maturity.

@someonelikeyou6138 agree with on his negative shedy Psychological charaters but his acting is pretty effectless dude for me if an actor hides his efforts flawlessly and effectively then I must consider that actor Tobe great which mohanlal has this tremendous effectlessness and natural acting but Mammooty though not watched his movies fully but I must say he is forced in his acting
That's why I never liked Daniel day lewis acting very forced acting same goes to kamal hassan
      And Mammooty
Fahad hides his efforts very well on screen and he is very good subtle actor he can do so many human emotions with his eyes and smile and stare just like mohanlal without words
Mohanlal master at subtle and uperplay acting
Yes fahad charaters had reputation and his mannerisms also his reputation
But as far as acting concern he is very good in it but I even I don't like people hyping him as best actor in india and generation like that

Dude it's like when you are asked to pick from a 150 ₹copy of a 1.5 lacs watch and a 1500 ₹watch. Fahad is that 150 ₹ copy who looks like it's original. His first problem is, his every character stays with him forever. He is not flexible. If you notice after doing Kumbalangi nights in his every performance you can see the mannerism of shammi . Another problem is he lacks the sense to understand a character inside out . The best example is Vikram . Even a kid who has watched spy movies in the childhood knows how to behave as a character. Why does a cold efficient secret agent, who is supposed to be vigilant in stealth when is about to catch a criminal ( marriage function scene) make a goofy face and play around with people(especially when there is nothing to do with comedy for Amar in the script.) He, instead of elevating that scene, was making it spoof . Image Tom Cruise doing this in mission impossible in the middle of an operation 😂😂( when is not in the script). Fahad does not understand when to be funny and when to be not. That scene itself is the proof of his pathetic acting. Blud will still over act if he is asked to play the role of a wayfarer 😂😂 And the third is his lack of basic masculine features and body language to perform powerful characters. He is just ruining great characters one after another . Somebody should tell him it's not school level skits where a lean kid appears and shout ,screams and the audience should make believe that he is so menacing!!!.. (Of course the filmmaker has his own reasons for the casting.) His acting is childish . If Fahad is the best actor in India then you should agree that Nicholas Cage is the best actor in Hollywood. I remember being happy, crying , and respecting a lot of the characters of the big Ms. It is not a question of whether Fahad will come to those levels . It is that he lacks sense to understand charecters. He is hyped. He will give you more and more loud and even louder performances but will never improve.
