Friend, you really appreciate those break-action rifles don't you! Great respect for Henry rifles and Mr. Imperato, but I still wish Harrington&Richardson was still in business! They pioneered the switch barrel, multi-caliber rifle/shotgun combos years ago! American made too! Affordable also! That said, your statements about single shots and hunting were appreciated! Please keep sharing, Blsgs, gg
I have a Savage single shot brake action, deluxe with walnut stocks and checkering! I check 30-30 loads with style! I used to use a 788 in 30-30 for that operation. Sadly I had a brain fart and let a collector talk me out of it along with my 788 in 44 magnum! 😢
I have an NEF single shot in 30/30 -223-270 each is very accurate. The 30/30 is my usual deer rifle. The 270 is for elk and the 223 stays on my ATV for coyotes. The coyote gun averages 30 per year as I run fences it has a nice 2 to 7 power scope. The 270 has an expensive 3 to 9. The 30/30 is factory open sights.
They can be surprisingly accurate if you land a good one. Great idea to put a good scope on it. People forget that and stick cheap scopes on their “cheap” rifles. Big mistake. They can often benefit from a trigger job though! Roy
Roy, Love it. But what I really want would be something smaller and straight walled. Thinking .38 spl/357 or .32 mag. like your splendid .32 conversion.
Kinda, but it’s of much higher quality. I’ve owned many H&R rifles and it can be hit or miss. Sometimes they shoot great, other times not and triggers go from terrible to “okay” as you know. This is first class all around. Roy
I still am, Larry. Can’t resist them. Watch for a cover gun in Guns in a while. I wrote up the new SSK Contender frame they are making. Www.hausofarms.com is selling them. A marvelous base to build on. Roy@@larryvollmar8763
Here's to hoping JJE Capital Holdings LLC brings back H&R firearms. Their Handi Rifle was basically the same functional idea, but they were made in many more calibers than Henry currently does, also custom barrels weren't that difficult for them. Does Skinner make a peep for that Henry?
Skinner does make a sight for this one. And I agree about the H&R models. If brought back, I just hope they ramp up quality a bit to make them more consistent. Roy
@@fmgpubs Agreed. They were so affordable and did well for the price, but I don't think people would object to another $100 on average (shotguns and rifles) if they got better fit/finish for it.
MR Hunnington since you have and love contender's like l do you should get a 16 in.carbine 30-30 and a buttstock/forend l'm sure you would be impressed.l also have a MGM contender 18 in.carbine barrel in 25-20....both are very accurate with cast or jacketed bullets.l enjoy all your videos sir.
Thanks Philip. I had a 30-30 rifle and like the fool I am, sold it years ago. But I keep my good eye open! I just love the 30-30 and have taken several Missouri Whitetail with it in my Contender. Works like a charm! Thanks for touching base. Roy
It’s more about taste than mechanics. Both will hunt fine, with most single shots having a slight accuracy edge over levers. But for those I know who enjoy single shots, it’s about the feeling of slowing down a bit, the challenge of knowing you have one shot and how nice they are to carry. Roy
You need all of them! Ha! I like the simplicity and feel a single shot brings. A sort of “state of the mind” it puts you in as you single load, cock the hammer and know you just have the one shot. Roy
@@fmgpubs ok, so it's just because it's cool and adds challenge, we aren't talking about a weapon for getting as many deer as possible like a Marlin 1895CB or an AR-15 in 350 legend
I have a bunch o those 110 gr. FMJ bullets made for the .30 Carbine … I’m betting you could get some serious velocity out of them in this set-up. Time to experiment! Roy
I agree bill. I always enjoy the American made idea of things like this. It sorta’ begs for a bit of customization too. Maybe a stock refinish, and believe it or not … how about hard chrome for a finish. That’d be retro and modern all at the same time! Roy
Fun, mostly. Plus many people like the challenge of only one shot. It makes you take your time. A single shot also slows down a day shooting, allowing you to put more time into thinking about your shooting, sight picture, trigger squeeze, etc. You also shoot far less ammo than a semi-auto, and they are great platforms for honing your reloading skills searching for the most accurate load for your rifle. Roy
Seems excellent on my sample rifle. I’ve not heard of build quality issues with their guns though. What’s been your personal experience? I hesitate to believe rumors but if you have personal experience, I’d love to hear it. Roy
I'm not a fan of single shot rifles because I'm skinny, and they rock me pretty well, and they also dont provide any recoil reduction for the operator.
Use smaller calibers. A 30-30’s recoil is very modest and can easily take deer, etc. Get some tips from someone to help with your stance. I find leaning into it by rolling your shoulders forward slightly and keeping the stock tight against your shoulder allows you to handle even higher recoiling rifles. I’m not a big fellow at all, but I shoot .45-70s (double rifle and single shots) and .500 now and again. Mind over matter! Roy
@fmgpubs , 45-70 single shot left a bruise so big on my arm and chest from one shot I never want to shoot that caliber again. Very painful. Also, yes, I held it perfectly snug to the shoulder, and it kicked the heck out of me. That's the only rifle that's ever bruised me especially that big it wad half my chest type of bruise. I do believe it was a 500-600 grain custom load bullet.
Some of those custom loads are ugly. I favor a hard cast 350 gr. bullet at about 1200 fps. Nice and mild but still very effective. PAST makes a simple recoil pad you wear. Find them online. Roy@@trevorthomas1030
@fmgpubs , I was bruised really bad for about a month. It was brutal, but lessons were learned that day about the custom loads people bring out to the range. I do still want a 45-70. I just don't think I'd personally ever load it that hot.
$500 ×/- for an NEF clone?! Nearly as ugly as that Homesteader PCC POS or the worse RG clone revolver. Trading on the pretty (expensive) lever gun rep is detestable
Paul, this is no NEF clone. It’s beautifully made, accurate and has a much better trigger. I’ve had plenty of H&R/NEF/Rossi guns and this is clearly in another category. Plus, they are selling well as many fellows enjoy single shots so Henry responded to the wants of the market. Roy
Now you can safely load up the spitzer projectiles.
Or lever evolutions
Savage 99 Lever action does just fine. It is in a rolling magazine instead of a tube.
They make this gun in 308, why reinvent the wheel?
Even a lever gun is a 2-shot with spitzer bullets, if you have your whits about you when operating it.
