How anyone could think Rautavaara is some sort of successor to Sibelius is beyond me. This is the fourth or fifth time I’ve forced myself to listen to his “symphonies”, hoping to hear something cohesive, interesting and purposeful. The woodblocks don’t help matters either, except to wake me out of my Rautavaarian stupor. I’ve learned my lesson.

I'll be honest, I'm not much of a fan of Rautavaara's later symphonies. But as a Sibelius devotee, this piece is the most 'Sibelian' Rautavaara gets, imo. Sure, it becomes more Stravinskian near the end, but the tone colors, the voice-leading, the layering of ideas, the brevity; it's all incredibly influenced by Sibelius here. I don't know. I respect your opinion, but I keep coming back to this piece because it feels the most like the immediate extension of Sibelius than pretty much anything else I've heard, and I have spent decades searching for composers and works that would fill that niche. Just my thoughts. There is a lot here, and it's always been disappointing to me that Rautavaara never continued in this vein - I'm happy that he found his road, and followed it. But this brief early stop is what I crave more of
