Hi Friends, in this tutorial I am explaining how to pait forground, midground and background to improve your painting. How to interpret what you see in real life using visual language for the painting to tell a story. How to use valus, tones and edges in different grounds and why it is important.
Hope it is helpful, if so please like, subscribe and share.
Happy painting!

this is an incredible lesson - the painting when it's done almost looks like a magic trick where the human observer fills in the blanks.
7:38 "...the focal point is attacked with all my might and strength." 😀 I Love that!! You're the best TH-cam watercolor instructor!!
Thank you Kevin 🤣👍
it is the most helpful watercolor painting lesson in my life...appreciate a lot!! what a great job!
I'm so glad!
Your teaching style is awesome i was trying to learn about light and dark areas via diff videos but ur one made it super clear where to put focus how to do other areas light you are a great teacher thank you❤
Thank you! So glad to hear this!
So beautiful! Reminds me of Zbukvic's paintings. :) Thanks
Thank you Gaia!
This is very helpful. A lot of people show what they do and explain what they do, but not why they do it.
I'm glad this tutorial is helpful! You are right and Why is the most important part, isn't it!? :)
You have a wonderful way of explaining the process in simple, easy to follow terms. Of course, it requires lots of practice to implement these skills consistently. I look forward to more videos and information about any online workshops or courses.
Thank you Mark! I have Patreon at the moment if you're interested. I share a lot of good stuff there, not just show and tell. I usually receive "you are the only one who explains why" feedback on my teaching style. It's only $15. Also, I would recommend, going through all the demos without preference of subject and even if you don't want to paint just listen. Honestly my biggest progress was due to lots of listening before painting. Practicing without knowing exactly what and why close to useless. Best wishes!
Fantastic light sepia work ,especially details of bldg, n sciography in foreground.👍
Thank you!
Wonderful lesson, thank you!! Greetings from Chile
Many thanks!
SO VERY HELPFUL THANK YOU!!!
I'm so glad! Thank you!
Amazing talent you have !. Thank you for your demonstration.

🎉 nice to know.
Thank you!
that was very helpful. i find that i do well when doing a monochromatic painting, but i fall apart when trying to introduce colors. i found your explanation about the use of warm and cool colors based on where they are in the painting very helpful...i will keep practicing
Thank you Dan! I'm so glad this tutorial is helpful. Best of luck!
Beautiful!
Hi Nina, thank you for this. Do you have another video explaining the tonal numbers you mentioned please.
Thank you! Yes, I do. It has green 200 number as thumbnail. One of the oldest. But, I have the numbers there 1 black to 10 white, this is what you see on grey scale tools. But, as we paint in watercolor from light to dark, I find it confusing, so count them backwards (not just me, haha). So now I use 1 for white and go down to 10 as black. I feel like I need to update this "200" video to be consistent.
@@nvfineartstudio7296 Thank you Nina, I understand your system now. Like you in my mind White paper is 1 and black is 10 for the reason you state re tones. That’s how I number my grey and colour tone scales.
When it comes to chroma/intensity I number the other way round 10 to 1 or 0
Oh btw, I joined your Patreon Creative tier after I wrote my comment.
This is great, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask, there is an option for direct message on Petreon or right under the videos in comments. Hope you enjoy it!

Haha 🤣 good one, JZ invited me personally to WSV and had no issue with my style of painting, can't see how you would then
Hope you understand what this tutorial is about 🤣
Excelent!
Lovely work, I really like your use of colour.

Thank you Brian! This particular video will be a part of my course. But I'm getting ready another street scene for you guys this weekend. Hope it is as enjoyable :)
@@nvfineartstudio7296 Thanks Nina. You've brought about a step shift for me in my own painting. Thoroughly worth the sub. Best wishes, Brian
Muchas gracias!!!
Es un placer! Estoy tan contenta de que sea util!
Thank you so much for your video, it is very helpful! May I ask which colors did you use? How did you make them darker? And do you use your paper on the table, or do you have an angle? Thanks.
I'm so glad! I use a painting board at approx. 30o angle. I think I used a mix of ultramarine, a.crimson permanent and c.turquoise. I usually use N.Tint or/and B.Sienna to get the tones darker.
For the first wash I probably used Yellow Ochre.
@@nvfineartstudio7296 thank you so much for detailed information! I love your work. And I’m planning to take a course online 😊
Awesome explaining..
BTW what paper and brushes are you using?
Thank you! I usually use Arches, Saunders Waterford, Baohong 300 GSM rough (in this video it's Arches). In regards to my brushes, I have a tutorial. Please follow the link: th-cam.com/video/3COEk4w5_w0/w-d-xo.html
Hi Nina, thanks for your help explaining your watercolor process.may I ask what is the rigger brand and number you use for poles and small details?
Hi Bogdan, in this demo I am using Silver Black Velvet #0, but most recently I've been using NEEF needle brush #6 (for a sheet of paper larger than 1/4 imperial I would recommend #8)
@@nvfineartstudio7296 thanks for the response. I really appeciate that. Maybe is irrilevant for you, but you and a few of watercolor artist (like Joseph Zbukvic and Chien Chung-Wei)are my best mentors for tecnique and stuff to use.
Last time i painted I had to struggle a little to make thin long defined lines with an escoda prado nr 8.
So today i ordered some new brushes ( upgradings) and i took your stuff as exemple. Mainly i switched my escoda ultimo mops to GOLD Aquario but i didnt find out what measure of rigger to use. Now i know it was a Neef brush. Thanks again.
Amazing! Thanks for sharing 👏👏👏💐
Thank you Luisa!
Hi Nina, thankyou for your videos, they are extremely helpful. I enjoyed painting along with you on this one. Is this a scene in Northcote?
Hi Peter, I'm so glad to hear that! It's in Camberwell, near Maling Rd :)
Excellent teaching!
Thank you Pedro, I'm glad it's helpful!
Great lesson. Thanks!
Thank you Sherry! Glad it's helpful!
Hi Nina thank you for another of your helpful instructions. Just one question: do you stretch your paper and if so, how do you do it?
Kind regards, Al
Thanks Alaudin! No, not in a traditional way. I spray the back of the paper if it's from a roll and tape it with masking tape to the board. If it's from a flat pack (full sheet or half) I just tape it straight to the board. I don't paint too wet, and even if the paper buckles during the first wash it doesn't bother me. I don't like the traditional stretching, you tend to get too precious and lose spontaneity after all the pre-work you've done to the paper 🤷😉
So great
Thanks again! ☺️
excellent
Thank you!
Thank's for sharing my friend, you are a great
Thank you! It's always a pleasure
