    "... needing a tool to open the tools on my tool - that's a level of recursion I am not necessarily comfortable with" has to be one of my all-time favorite product review zingers. Love it! Altogether, a very helpful and entertaining review. Thanks!

    This is the only UK legal Leatherman I know of that isn't a Squirt, so I'm happy the tools don't lock. I have the S2 and I can't recommend it enough.

    The saw is the key to this multitool. If the saw is something you use then this is the only leatherman that can compete with victorinox. Without this I have to choose between a saw or a pliers, carry a too heavy brick in my pocket or carry a leatherman and a victorinox. There's a bunch of leatherman's for people that don't need the saw, let us saw users have this one (maybe I'm the only one that uses these though, perfect for notches).

      +Mt. Baldwin So do you carry the Victorinox/leatherman combo? I just might after getting a Juice. Juice/ Victorinox Camper edc seems ok to me

    • @SweWince
      @SweWince 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TonyMoleman490 I like the saw as well, its great for other things than sawing when you have it close at hand like scraping with the back side, using ferro rods, carefully scratching mosquito bites (sounds weird but trust me xD). And also specific tasks where a knife would be laborous to do the same thing like cutting thicker plastics, piping etc! Haven't tried the Juice saw though

      I totally agree. Use the saw in the most awkward spots where I would have to go a long way to get the tool. Juice wins

    Got a CS4 for Christmas from the wife in 2004. My very first multi-tool. Carried it everyday in a sheath on my belt for five years, and I loved it. Yes, it is nail nick heavy but the outside tools are easy to get out.
    The inside tools, however, as Nick so beautifully demonstrated, are a bear to open. I actually have a paracord lanyard on my CS4 to help me get those inside screwdriver tools out because otherwise they tear up my fingernails.
    The lifter thing for the corkscrew (I don't know what it's called either) is also a can/bottle opener. And a corkscrew can be used to open wine bottles, of course, but also as a scraper and to untie knots. The Victorinox micro screwdriver tool also fits in the CS4 corkscrew, so you have an extra tool there.
    Overall, a handy little tool that I'm glad I got.

    Nick the reason for the oddly short blade is that they wanted to make the tool compliant with the proposed 2013 TSA rule change that would have made short blades that fit within a very narrow set of parameters legal to carry on planes (those rules also guided the design of the Spyderco Roadie). The rule change was scrapped but Leatherman decided to stick with the redesign/refresh of the line. I have one of the original CS4's. It has a weird spear point/drop point blade that looks oddly thin compared to the body of the tool.

    Since it is summer and I wear shorts for work I use my Leatherman Squirt PS4 every day... Mostly opening boxes with the file, cutting plastic with the knife, and sometimes removing splinters with whatever it takes... When I go back to pant weather, I'm going to pick up a Juice... Seems like a nice medium choice......

  • @ComUnSas
    @ComUnSas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    - The separate Leatherman bit driver *does* fit the Juice Phillips head
    - The non-locking knife makes a Juice one of the few decent sized, quality multi-tools you can safely EDC in environments or countries with restrictive knife laws
    - I've just noticed that my Juice S2 has 'scallops' cut into the handles which make nail access to the smaller tools relatively easy. The CS4 appears to not have similar cut-outs. So, if nail-nicks are a potential concern maybe consider an S2, or drinking more milk and taking a zinc supplement
    - Yes, the pricing is bonkers

    • @ComUnSas
      @ComUnSas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      PS you can add slightly more functionality to the corkscrew by fitting it with a Victorinox mini screwdriver, which does fit nicely

    • @NickShabazz
      @NickShabazz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +ComUnSas How does one pop that Phillips head out to fit a Leatherman bit in?

    • @ComUnSas
      @ComUnSas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nick Shabazz It's the 'Removable bit driver' you can fit onto the Phillips. It certainly works on my S2. Then you can slot a Leatherman or standard bit into that. You can't fit a bit directly into a Juice. Personally, I've never quite understood carrying a separate dedicated extension and bits with a multitool. I may as well carry a small ratchet rather than an extender. However, these things seem popular.

    • @ComUnSas
      @ComUnSas 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ... fwiw in terms of tool selection, nail-nicky and slip-jointy nature of the Juice line, I've always considered it as Leatherman's alternative to a mid-size Victorinox, rather than a scaled-down Wave, - only with decent pliers and at 2-3x the price. As such I suspect Juices appeal more to European customers than US consumers.

    Great review Nick. Really enjoyed your humour and learning from your depth of knowledge. I am not used to that Can Opener/Cork Screw Assist but I have watched some reviews on it and they were quite positive for use on the cans. The Cork Screw will most likely never be used by me. I am leaning toward the CS4 as an upgrade to my EDC bush kit. I like the lighter weight, smaller size and solid construction. My normal multi tool is the much cheaper and lighter Swiss Army Hiker. The saw is a big plus for me for use in the bush. I may attach a Ferrocerium Rod striker to the lanyard as a way to open those stiff screw drivers. Thanks again Nick.

  • @WigglyWolfProductions
    @WigglyWolfProductions 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I actually switched my CS4 out for an S2, because I never used the corkscrew for any reason, and every tool I am missing is duplicated in something else I carry normally. Also, an interesting counterpoint, if you need some additional bit options, they do sell a removable bit driver set that is designed to fit over the phillips on any of the Leatherman's with a similar driver.

    Thanks for a good review. It can be nice to mount a Victorinox Swiss mini screwdriver in the corkscrew tool, to use on glasses / sunglasses and other small things, you can never get to much tools on Juice CS4! : ) The saw tool is a matter of taste and need, just like any other tool, and not something to view as unnecessary or wrong. I think that they made the blade shorter on purpose for a reason in mind. If someone absolutely must have a longer blade, then choose a different model with longer blade. I agree with you that the tools should be more easy to access!

      and it easy to sharpen, which makes it a nice compliment to a more expensive knife. I like having a short wharny blade that I don't mind gunking up with tape or hitting staples with because it takes 5 minutes to resharpen it.

    Might nick your digits a little, but you...er, nailed your presentation. All due respect, I can't say I fully agree with you on the saw, I love having something robust that'll tear through something besides wood if I need it (and I have on occasion) that I'd worry might otherwise compromise a serrated blade. All that aside, I sincerely love your no non-sense delivery...You could moonlight voice over work for the right spots...trust me. Plus, you made me laugh (out loud mind you) several times. Post apocalyptic hellscape for survivalist wine sommeliers?! LOL. Heck, I know I'd be drinking plenty if I was trying to survive one.

    Nick Shabazz Solid review (as always). I have the CS4 and it's the only Leatherman that I currently own. I like that it has some of the Wave elements, but is a much more forgiving pocket carry. Overall I'm pretty happy with it, but if priced closer to $55-60, it would enter more gem-like territory, at least for my tastes. But the 'magic' CS4 woud have an S35V blade and easier tool access.

    The Juice S2 is the gold standard for EDC multitools imo. Compared to the CS4 you lose a few tools that are not that useful for me anyway (saw, corkscrew) but you also save some weight. On top of that, the tools on the inside are easier to access than on the CS4.

    • @davidwatson3035
      @davidwatson3035 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree, I have the orange Juice S2 and it's really nice when you're not carrying something like the Wave. The only two bad things I can say about the S2 is that to get to the scissors you have to open up the can opener tool, I'd prefer the scissors to be instantly available. The other slight downer is that the side of the case with the orange handle feels too flexible. It has some bend to the scale, too much really. Otherwise it's great. like this Nick's review. My favourite of all time is the Wave though. Love it, especially with the bit set.

      @funghiman8492 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed on the functions and SaWC (Size and Weight Constraints). One way of making it even better for EDC on Leatherman's side is to include a pocket clip, removable or fixed. Or any quick-attachment accessory like the raptor sheath. Carrying the Juice loose in pocket can be annoying at times, even with lanyard.

    • @jacobmanalang8162

      get a tec p7 suspension clip and you have a fantastic and durable pocket clip as well as deep carry. if you want to exchange emails ill send you one to try. its how i carry my juice c2 and i love it.
      also with all these custom kydex makers i dont see why you couldnt either make your own sheath or have one comissioned if you dont mind spending the coinage for it.

    • @likota123

      Thanks for the recommendation, yeah I know of TEC. Some of their other accessories are also nice to have (namely the split ring kits) and I can give it a try when placing my next order on BHQ. My initial point was this can also be done on Leatherman's side to make them sell better. Actually I cried for that every time that I went to Portland and visited their retail store/servicing center, maybe I'm just a little spoiled by the Wingman/Sidekick/Sideclip/Kick style pocket clip.

    One of the reasons I use only Leatherman MTs is that they're modular. For this application the removable bit driver fits on the phillips. The CS lever also opens cans, and bottles. The CS I seldom use too, put a SAK precision driver bit in and more function is had. I too keep my nails clipped short, my pointer and thumb are somewhat longer for utility/scratching purposes.

    I don't particularly agree with counting the saw as a con, I think it's just how you're looking at it. They aren't just for lumberjacks or survivalists, they're for generally handy people. You'd be shocked at how quickly you can trim down a 2x4 with one of these little Leatherman saws.

    Nick we all know that the original and current wave are the industry’s bench mark.. although the original swisstool is a beast of a tool with some pretty unique tools on compared to a leatherman but weighing in at over 10 ozs!! The juice range here in the UK is a big seller because of our stiff rules on locking blades and blade length. See if you can get your hands on the original juice xe6.. it came in purple and grey only.. weighs in around 6ozs but has all the functionality of the original wave including an awl. Plus longer cutting blades than the current juice range..about the same size of large Swiss Army knife I think you’d like it it’s a beautiful thing..

    But what I don't get is that if I for example need a locking tool or a full size tongs, I'm probably in a situation where I should have a small toolset at hand and that I would much prefer a small toolset to the Wave. Such circumstances might be when a car, motorbike, boat engine or something has broken down. The Juice, for me, is a tool that's handy when I don't have the toolset, like when hiking or just edcing. So my question is, why carry a wave when you can keep regular tongs close at hand when you need them and might prefer them, maybe along with a Juice?

  • @nfarrar

    • @peteg22397
      @peteg22397 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nicholas Farrar
      Seems pretty unnecessary to me. Most people will carry a primary blade for cutting, multitool blades are just a 'better than nothing' option. No point having a huge increase in price on the tool, just for better blade steel in a blade most people won't use. Just immediately loses out on value.

    • @nfarrar
      @nfarrar 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I and other disagree. I wouldn't always carry another knife if my multitool knife was of functional design and premium steel. Thats the reason I EDC a Charge TI. It has a useful but small S30V blade. It holds a good edge but I would like a smaller multitool option like the juice with premium steel.

    The Wave is just too large and heavy for pocket EDC for me and I imagine many people. But if you're looking for a pocket sized Leatherman that's beefier than the squirt, the Skeletool is the obvious choice. It's cheaper and lighter than the CS4, has a locking blade and a pocket clip, and you give up a few less useful tools while getting a bit driver with storage for an extra bit.

    the leatherman juice and skeletool are my top 2 edc light use multi tools and run in direct competition with eachother in my carry rotation. i own 3 skeletools though....because bit drivers...and bit extender...
    i have the juice c2 which does not have the saw or scissors.
    i love the plier shape on the c2. even moreso than the skeletool. action is smoother as well. feels better in hand than the skeletool.
    i prefer the bottle opener on the skeletool. the knife on the juice c2 is nicer than the skeletool but the higher end non serrated skeletool has a nice knife with 1 handed opening and locks.
    they really should dump the phillips on the juice for the 2 bit drivers so you can do your glasses and use all the other bit drivers. pocket clip is negated by adding a tec p7 suspension clip or if you go on ebay buy the china clones with an x on them for a buck or less if you buy 10 or more. theyre fantastic. put them on all your keys.
    i dont mind the non locking tools so much. for most uses you can just adjust your angle and grip. theres some angles the skeletool does better.
    nail nick is a very strong gripe.
    the juice cs4 is too thick for my tastes. the c2 is slightly slimmer than the skeletool so i like it a lot. i wouldnt go with the cs4. id opt for the wave as for a few bucks more you do get the better tool. more capability, strength, slightly larger in size.
    damn though if the juice line doesnt look cool.
    i carry the leatherman bits in my 5th pocket/coin pocket with a victorinox cadet daily for work with the skeletool.
    for super light duty i carry a squirt ps4 and a style cs. im not fond of this setup but its tiny and light.
    ill be buying the wave sometime this year to see if my opinions change. i have the surge and its just too much for my edc uses. i only carry it on my off days when ill be in the garage on a belt sheath. i prefer pocket clip but not with that bad boy

    Deciding on the CS4 or the Juice S2 for a EDC. The non locking blade makes it city friendly within the laws. But for work only, I would opt out for a Wave or Skeletool.

  • @bradyblackburn4863
    @bradyblackburn4863 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just don't see the point in this particular tool. If you want a bare bones edc multitool, go for the S2. If you want a much more robust multitool but still want it compact, get the XE6. It's got the saw, serrated blade, file, and awl on top of what the CS4 has. Or, just move up to the Wave/Charge.

      Brady Blackburn I’m a Leatherman fan but this seems to be the one tool that doesn’t really have a point, except making it bigger than the little ones and smaller than a wave. Most SAKs kick it’s arse imho.

    Hey nick what do you think of fallkniven knives, and their steels VG10 and 3G?

    • @rodrigoteresa7944
      @rodrigoteresa7944 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ivan Žeželj Look at CedricAda Gear & Outdoors' tests. They are very consistent and the results should be pretty reliable.
      I'm recommending because Nick doesn't do fixed blade reviews.

    • @NickShabazz
      @NickShabazz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It'd be a fine steel if the tools cost what they did 20 years ago. But as the competition improves for the price, staying still is falling behind.

    I agree with only 2 of you negatives. Mostly the price is too high when compared to the Leatherman line. The changeable bit addition would be nice, but changeable bits are only useful only if you have a place to store the bits. For a pocket tool this item is well designed and very useful. I gave a thumbs down as the review would have been more useful if you had demonstrated your pluses and minuses.

  • @richardthomas9856
    @richardthomas9856 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think Nick goes on and on too much about the supposed defects of the Juice. I guess a locking blade is nice to have but on a small tool such as the juice something you can live without. I have used the saw on the Swiss Champ knife to good effect in camping and field work situations, and it is smaller than the saw on the Juice, so I would hardly consider the saw on the Juice as somehow substandard.

    • @gratengelsker7614
      @gratengelsker7614 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nick Shabazz I watched ur review on it and i really agreed! But Im not sure if maybe should go for a style PS, which has no blade and i guess can be used in public places. Here in Norway no dangerous tools are allowed outside of home, haha.

    • @funghiman8492
      @funghiman8492 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try looking for the old-spec Squirt PS4s with torx pivots (if the tools confiscated at airports ends up in auctions). You can then remove the dangerous blade and replace that with some safer tools.

    • @NickShabazz

      Carter Why? Any comparison is fair so long as you balance out differences in cost.

    • @fsen1999
      @fsen1999 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      in my opinion i think its totally fair, he mentioned how the cs4 is smaller and so therefore can be better for some people, but also mentioned how the price points are very similar and for a tiny bit extra you're getting what he believes is an overall better tool (as long as u can handle the extra size and weight)

    • @Dkguerilla
      @Dkguerilla 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hmm okay, well our opinions differ but that okay.i think a bit unfair because i think the cs4 is more meant for EDC and the wave more for outdoors stuf or something you put in your car. i carry the wave now since i lost my juice s2..and i hate it weight wise. anyhow nick nice vid..i thumbed it up !
