    As someone who's only been using blender for a couple of years total (with a few long breaks within that), I was halfway through typing out a comment when you got to Tip 3, which was basically what I was going to write. Picking a pretty complicated project that I had no idea how to complete, then finding tutorials/forum posts/etc to solve each problem I found as I found it. There's still a great deal I don't know about using blender, but I know a hell of a lot more now than I did. Most recently I spent a couple of days on the problem of 'I really want a 'set of drawers/cupboards generator' in geonodes, so I don't have to remake them from scratch whenever I have a project that needs drawers/cupboards', and now I both know more and have a very useful node tree file.
    In addition, finding tutorials that teach an interesting element and saving the project file *with the tutorial/video name*, so I can find it again later.
    Happy new year, and thanks for the videos so far! I have a fair number of your tutorials in my 'blender' playlist, and your procedural roof tile video was particularly useful recently. (I spent a while figuring out how to add half-tiles to the ends to fill the gaps, which helped get my head around indexes a bit better.)

    Hi, do you know if it's possible to do audio ducking inside Blender.
    I'd like to duck the sound of an audio using the output of another audio strip.
    For example, you'd have a voice over cam and some background music audio strip, and I'd like the background to duck when there is talking but come a bit louder when there's nobody talking.
    I can export the whole audio tracks separately and do the ducking in Audacity then import the result back in Blender but this is really cumbersome...

    I found the best way was to dive in and spend a week with it, trying different things and only searching for a video when I had exhausted every possible option to do something i want to do. Trial and error is the best way in my opinion and video and tutorials is a crutch that should only be leaned on when good old fashion trial and error are failing you. I am also a firm believer in learning the Core Blender before adding or enabling a single addon. Knowing how the software works at its core basic will go a long way in making you see how it was setup to work and will make you really appreciate the addons down the road!

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @kevinm3751 I agree people should be trying things out themselves but you need to have a starting point to try and fix issues/find solutions. And if you don't know what that function is called you're going to spend hours or dad's barking up the wrong tree.

    I also learned with Grant Abbitt 👍. I often went through his tutorials and then built the model again without the video. That way I had control over what I had understood and what I had just copied. Or modeled something else similar to see if the tutorial had an effect.
    Notes: If you write things down by hand (!), your brain stores them in a different place than if you write them down on the computer.
    Don't forget to read: e.g. what are “normals” and what exactly do they influence? What is meant by refractive index (IOR)? Not everything is served as a video. And often a precise text is easier to understand than a video because the pace is not set.
    In any case: Thanks for the great viedeo and a happy new year!

The further into the courses you get you are exposed to more developed hands-on exercises.
      The second folder normally has both base and finished Blender files for the exercises as well as a list of useful add-on's.

    Great advice. I'm struggling with Blender and I think it's because I'm used to CAD. Blender takes a different mindset and I'm struggling to get past that. I will doggedly approach a method to create something in Blender, trying to use the approach I would use in CAD and it never works. I doubt I'm alone in this and so maybe a short series of videos addressing how not to use CAD design approaches in Blender would be of interest to others like myself.

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @stuartsimmons956 So look at CAD in a similar way. There is quite a nice middle ground you can achieve in Blender so you can still have a bit of a CAD like workflow depending on what you want to achieve. It will never go as far as the constraints of CAD however.
      What CAD bits do you like? It would be good to get some ideas together for a video that works as a bit of a bridge between the two.

    For me a good advises to add when starting a project might be to have a good plane before opening blender, specially if the project is rather challenging. I Start by first doing some sketch, take some measurement, you can also use references inside blender. It can help to understand what you will need, how to do trim properly and with consistency for example.

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @r.e.m.s I would be a bit of a hypocrite if I said that as I very rarely plan things out on paper, it just doesn't work for me. I do most of my planning and "sketching" in Blender. It's one of the reasons I love the non-destructive modelling aspect of Blender so much as I can change things around later.
      But for lots of people I know it's great advice 👍🏻

      @@ArtisansofVaul I think, I throw away quite a lot of prints as I didn't realize how off-proportion they were before printing, but nothing that a quick rescaling cannot solve :). Since I'm more carefull on this aspect I have less issues.
      For details I have quite some difficulties to start directly on 3D. But to refine the overall flow of the miniature I use simple shapes as cube, sphere or cylinder to block the volume on blender, I don't know if it count as sketching as it is already done before on paper, the good thing is that I can turn arround the model, not something that can be done on a flat sheet of paper.

    Still early days for me as I have been using blender for less than a year. Most of what you had to say made sense to me. I might eventually get around to using some addons but it seems to me that there is a lot to explore in just basic blender and I don't want to depend on something that may break when the next blender version comes around.
    The other thing that strikes me is that there is no need to use the word best here. That does not really make sense to me since blender is so feature rich and people likely have very diverse goals in mind.

    • @ArtisansofVaul
      @ArtisansofVaul  29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @peircedan I use addons a lot and have used Blender for a long time and have only ever had one paid for addon in all that time not get updated, the indie developers are very good at keeping them working. Also if one did stop working that doesn't stop you learning the "basic" Blender version then when you need to. It seems like this option is just holding you back unnecessarily.
      I think I have been using Blender long enough and having tried a range of things that using the word "best" is justified in this instance. I'm quite clear in the video it's an opinion but it's an opinion evidenced by a good amount of experience. You're right people differ but generally if I had someone who has learnt a skill, let's say archery, over a decade and they told me something is the "best" way of doing something I would think they probably had a good point.

    • @peircedan
      @peircedan 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@ArtisansofVaule What held me back was actually a busy schedule and diverse interests. I decided years ago to put off learning blender until I retired. For a long time OpenSCAD was sufficient for my needs. I felt that in retirement I would have time for more. I have been retired a year now and I have been working on blender for about half a year. I spent the first months of retirement finishing off some of the 3D printing projects I wanted to do and just having a good time.
      I have found educators have different styles and I would be reluctant to rank different approaches. I worked with different educators for 37 years so I have seen both dogma from some who think things ought to be done in one particular way and others who are open to a diversity of approaches. This has led me to think it unlikely there is a single best approach.

    I'm coming from Maya and prefer Maya right at this moment and that's probably because that is what I learned in school. However, the price tag on it was not ok. The UI in general is taking a long time to get used to and the shortcuts are going to be forever for me. Maya just seemed so intuitive to me and I am sure Blender is at that same level just I don't know how long it's going to take me to get as used to it as I was in Maya. I have been following tutorials through video formats only because I know how to 3d model, I just need to know what tools are named what in Blender compared to Maya. :P

    I would add: Find a creator of training courses / tutorials that teaches what you wish to learn, add that you are comfortable with; and stick with only them until you develop some confidence in your Blender-ing. Branch out out to other creators in your chosen field after that. Blender is like anything on TH-cam; if you watch enough videos from different creators, they soon start contradicting themselves without an explanation as to why (tris vs quads, for example). This left me confused and disheartened. I found a creator I can work with, and my learning / understanding / confidence iwith Blender has skyrocketed.
