  • A Budget Guitar Strat Shootout - SX Strat vs Squier Affinity Stratocaster. Both guitars have their pros and cons and hopefully I covered just about everything for you including how they sound and well they are built. Squier dominates the cheap guitar market but SX (or Essex) is maybe the best cheap guitar you can find. Let me know what you think.

      intheblues hey mate, I think the sx sounded every bit as good especially bridge pick up. I love the fact that you are doing demo's on great value guitars and gear. There's way too many guitar snobs that wont even consider a cheaper brand cause it has the wrong logo on the headstock. I think you prove an awesome point. You can have a very decent instrument these days and it doesn't have to cost thousands. Sure it's nice to have those as well, but I would certainly be a lot more comfortable taking one of these to a gig somewhere than my $3k custom shop tele...

I also chose SX so far! It is the most sound like a normal Fender I found for a just price! If we look on the price in Brazil, SX is the best option comparing against other brands! Mainly because Squier can cost almost 2 or 3 times one SX guitar, sometimes! SX has a really great sound, and playability, and of course the best price! Things like frets not full polished, or country of kind of the wood used, are not so significant in guitars of these price range like Squier and SX, in my opinion.

    I had both guitars in the past and in my view the SX was the better instrument. Both guitars were just over £100 at the time, if I remember correctly the SX was £120 and the Squier £110. It could be luck of the draw with each particular guitar, or the fact that my SX was an older model with the "proper" shaped headstock and perhaps those were better quality (I thought so anyway). Whatever it was, the SX only needed a few tweaks to become a good guitar (and not just for the price, a good guitar fullstop). The Squire was good, but overall a bit rougher around the edges, more like a guitar you would expect to get for that little money, whereas the SX felt like a more expensive guitar with a real vintage vibe. With a set of better pickups, the SX really was on another level, whereas the Squier would have needed a lot more work to get there. Just my two cents...

    GOOD shoot out Shane!
    MY take, SX & Squier very similar overall.
    However, the SX defintely HOTTER sounding pick ups. A bit 'rude' sounding on neck and middle, whereas the Squier the same pick ups sounded a but more 'refined'!
    Bridge pick ups however, were more noticeable, the Squier being your typical thin/harsh sounding single coil either clean or dirty whereas the SX bridge pick up had some beef to it and wasn't as trebbly or harsh!
    But, both guitars are horses for courses, both great value for money, but I too would go for the SX over the Squier in this case! Might be BETTER to compare the SX to a Classic Vibe model!
    Cheers.

    Great video. I have a SX vintage series Strat that I purchased from a cash converters for €80. The only things I changed were the tuning keys to gotoh 18:1, pick guard and put in a N tune tuner. They are great guitars for the price. If I were to purchase a squire Strat it would set me back €239. In the end it's what works for you. Keep up the great vids.

    I found the Squire was bordering on ice pick highs. Surprisingly the SX had a nice, well rounded tonal range with nice low ends. SX sounded fuller, too. In any case with both guitars, you could easily upgrade a few things and still come in under the cost of the more premium models and have a workhorse.

    They sound about the same, the SX and the Squier Affinity. Since you didn't mention any build-quality issues with either guitar -- other than the minor thing about the fret ends -- I assume here are none to speak of, so the SX would be the much better value. I was impressed that the SX is so much cheaper, at a little over half the price of the Squier. But when I converted the retail price of the Squier (AU$350, per some Aussie online vendors) into Malaysian ringgit, I was surprised: over there, the Affinity series costs what we in Malaysia pay for the Standard series (the next series up) at 0% GST.

Peepz selling them on Craigslist etc are lucky to get half their asking price!! I picked up 2 newish Squier Affinity Strats last year for $60 each! If I'm on the hunt for an inexpensive Strat I'll go for a Fender MIM anyday!! ***Related note: Loved your guitars with no resale value video!! I was playing a Squier 70s vintage modified for quite a while and it was okay. I was very disappointed by a poor factory setup, nasty fret edges, burrs on the top of the frets that added an uncomfortable friction during bends, and a fretboard that had a chunk taken out of it during production and was given a piss poor repair job. I just assumed that's what you got with a cheap $300 guitar. After your SX tele video, I decided to give one a try. It was $130, less than half the price of the Squier, loaded with P90s and when it arrived I was completely blown away. The setup out of the box was perfect, no truss rod adjustments, no string height issues, no buzzing. The frets were wonderfully dressed and the fit and finish are outstanding - I'll put it up against any of the American Teles I've played in the past. Yeah, the headstock is a little wonky but it doesn't matter when it feels this good and the tone with the P90s is monstrous.
    I can admit I had a bias against guitar brands I didn't recognize; just assumed if you wanted a cheaper Strat or LP you went Squier or Epiphone, but SX has open my mind to the fact that other people can make guitars too, and in some cases, even better than the brands you know. Maybe I just got lucky and got a good one, but it has quickly become my favorite and the best guitar I've ever played.
    EDIT: And in all fairness, I DID have to adjust the neck pickup a little bit. It was riding a little high and sounded muddy. Dropped it down and now it sings just as well as the bridge.

    Looked into this after seeing the SX’s on eBay. Have to say I’d largely agree with you, for me I thought the squier had a slight edge on positions 2 and 4 in the out of phase style sounds, but as you say it’s largely personal preference and I’d be tempted to get an SX as a project guitar. I was wondering if you can get hold of the JHS Vintage brand guitars in Australia, I’d be curious to know your thoughts on a few of those. Keep up the great videos mate all the best for 2020 from the UK.

    Very Similar sounds. I think the SX sounded a bit thicker that the Squier in a few of the takes. However on other takes I could not tell much difference. Personally I would have to go with the SX I had an affinity and its nut width being just a bit more narrow than any of my other guitars kind of drove me nuts. I assume they are still doing that anyway.

  • @breevwhyman2985

    i would mention also.......the SX has a skunk stripe neck rear
    .....this usually indicates a better quality neck and better wood. ALso it can be serviced easily with regard to changing a truss rod etc. This is not so easy on a Squire neck because all the fingeboard would need removing.
    Also the rosewood skunk stripe offers stability to the neck.......this will prevent possible warping and such.
    THe neck of a guitar is it's most important part of a guitar.
    Also the SX has the vintage tuners (like you said)........they are likely just better tuners with higher gear ratios. Those to facts above would sway me to the SX.
    Silly....but did you mention the prices also?.....300 oz dollars for each of them?........wow....they are just $99 usa dollars new for the SX in America.

    Great Vid Shane! I like the SX sound better than the Affinity. The Price is also a big consideration for me. I'm really NOT a Strat Guy, more of a Tele Man but the Neck on the Squire is probably 9.5" where the SX is I believe 13 1/4". Since I have small hands I like the smaller radius necks better but that's just me. I think that the SX makes a Great Working Instrument after making some adjustments, minor Fret Work and possibly making a few electronic upgrades like pots and switches. The Price of the SX Guitars here in the States is around $100 - 180 USD. Please keep up the Good Work Shane!! Love your gear Demos and Reviews!

    I’ve got both guitars for 3 months. Both are very well made. Very good guitars. But i don’t like SX pups so much. It is little bit thin and weak and lack of punchiness. I am considering a possible switch with wilkinson alnico v pups. Maybe another brand. I did not decide yet. Plus i don’t like sticky gloss necks. So i grinded it with sandpaper. Now it is perfect for smooth playing. Tuners are ok. Everything else very nice about this guitar. Just need pups change. I love Squier Affinity. It has warm, hot and crisp sound. Great full body crunchy tones. I love it. Neck is naturel satin finish. Zero stickeness. I feel the wood. So comfortable to play. But tone knobs less sensitive than SX. Only negative. But ok. All works. Final thought: I play mostly affinity because of the sound. I don’t like weak sx tone. But with pup change sx will be great!

    That’s crazy money for the Squier. You can get them in the US for $200 and if you live in Texas like I do you don’t have to pay taxes on musical instruments. Just print the paperwork off the internet and fill it out every time you buy anything that has to do with music and you’re tax free.

    Man I'm shocked at the prices of squiers in Australia! A player series strat works out at 598 in English pounds. Jesus christ still your mimum wage is like 18 bucks. Anyhow great comparison vid Shane, your work is steller Keep it up mate. Any chnace you could get a harley benton St and compare them!

      I just ordered an SX strat, $175 Aus dollars, delivered (I live on the Gold Coast). It was so cheap I couldn't resist. I ordered a Wilkinson steel block trem for $60 delivered (from EY, Korea) and I should be good to go (I hope). I have some spare strat pickups and electronics if I need to upgrade so I am hoping to have quite a decent player soon.

    I think they both sound really good. If I were to choose it would definitely be the sx. I just wish they were more available in the US vs paying the large shipping. but yeah they sounded very close. Curious how you feel about the classic vibe vs that sx.. Have you ever done a demo of any "vintage" guitars? that would be cool, ive been totally impressed with them.

      Classic Vibe series cost more than SX Strat. CV has better pickups, both have great quality/ build. SX cost less than CV with a pickups upgrade

    Not sure how to ask you a question other than via the video comment. I’m wondering if you could compare the Artist Strat against the SX and/or Affinity and/or equivalent Yamaha ???
    I’m a 58yo learning guitar on a borrowed classical guitar as a 2020 / covid19 lockdown project, wondering about an electric to move to once I can find my way around a bit better. Thank you, Geoff

    SX guitars are unsung gems and brilliant value for money. For me it just shades it over the Squire but really nothing in it and down to personal preference - the Squire is a little more jangly. Been after an SX Thinline tele for years S/H and one day I will catch one at the right price.

    Until you got to the bridge pup, I rather liked the brighter tone of the Squier with the darker sound of the amp, especially position 2. Sounded very Knofleresque. It all fell apart at the bridge though. The black one sounded thick and rich and the Squier sounded tinny.

      Just what I noticed, the SX seems to not be able to handle too many strings at once but the Squier does, although i'm not sure if that has to do with the "tunning issues" that he was having.

    Ofcourse the SX strat. Last week I couldn't help to visit the only music store here in Philippines and played some couple SX and Epiphones, and I ended up loving the White SX and compare it to the Red Squier, plug in to some unknown brand amp(Stagg?);
    The SX is feels solid, heavy, low action, a nice feel in the neck, the vibrato is legit so smooth and really good punchy funky bridge.
    And the Squier is more of a light weight cheap quality, the vibrato is really cheap hard to push down and easily get out of tune, but still sound good though.
    but I prefer the SX for a budget decent quality Guitar

    SX seems to be what in UK we have under the Vintage or Revelation brands, with similar pricing points to Squire or Epiphone? Same playability and sound pound for pound but with a few "cosmetic" finish tweeks. SX is rare in Europe but much more prevalent on the Pacific Rim.

    Glad to see you showing the Bandit some love man! It’s such a great amp and holds its own against much more expensive ones (hmmm...maybe another shootout??) Oh yeah, this is about the guitars 😉 Sounds like either can get you the twang, quack and would be serviceable to start out on, or make a great base model to build on. Agree the SX maybe has a couple more windings on the pickups and the neck seems a little nicer looking. Great video man! 🤙🏻😎🎸

    if you want a strat with non full size strat body, no good pickups, no laquer on neck then the squier is the thing to buy.

  • @CELproductions
    @CELproductions 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Own the exact same SX left handed Strat. Found the pickups to be surprisingly straty, they do glassy quite well too. I just hated the SX neck. Frets were shockingly sharp and kept lifting from the board. I'm using the SX body as the basis for a partscaster. It's a shame, they got so close to being a good competitor to the squire. Just can't justify the $1000+ price tag on the squire ranger anymore.

  • @gr33rtheartist
    @gr33rtheartist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Both of these are great for modders. I have had both squiers and sx strats and changed out most everything in them.
    Pickups can be a little nasty in both. Electronics are functional, but "cheap" in both.
    Tuners are not too bad. The sx ones overall are pretty good. No real issues with them.
    Both guitars need a decent set up (truss rod, intonation, fret level, action height, nut filing)
    The trems are nasty in both though. You can pick up great strat parts on ebay (wilkinson parts are great value for money and a noticeable step up in quality for both of these guitars, particularly the full steel block tremolos).
    All I would say is the headstocks look more traditional on the squiers so I prefer them for that reason.
