I remember the Mariotta one because it was a gold fantasy football play. You get a touchdown pass, a touchdown reception, a point for the reception in PPR leagues and the yardage. He wasn't on my team that year, but I wish he was that week.
Isaac, when you make a “history of” video it really is a *complete” history. Kudos 👊🏼 for the effort that must require! That said, as a punter, I can’t believe you gave Troy Polamalu a “pass” 😬 for screwing up Michael Vick’s self pass touchdown … after what he did to Pat McAfee when Pat had his golden opportunity for a similarly rare kind of punter glory!
1992 a little known QB by the name of Drew Bledsoe caught a pass from himself that was deflected by a d-lineman and subsequently ran it in for a touch down. This was his last year at WSU.
Remember when Mariota made that play, the meme was, “when you throw a TD to yourself” and it showed a picture of Kobe’s head on Marcus’ body it was so funny.
If we are actually talking about the rarest play that can happen in a game, it’s the 1 point safety. It’s happened twice I think in division 1 college football with the kicking team scoring, but it’s never happened with the defending team scoring
A defending team would have a 2-pt safety. By design, a 1-point safety is when the _defense_ has the ball out of the end zone, moves into the end zone and the offense tackles them in the end zone.

One of the great things about your channel are these "history of" for different plays and such. Maybe when you've finished them you can put them all in one video as a handy resource for football fans and those who appreciate the history of the game.
You missed two (at least). In a Monday Night Football game between the Giants and 49ers in 1989, Phil Simms threw a pass to himself, but you won't find it in the stats because it was negated by a penalty - a blitzing Ronnie Lott was bearing down on him, so he threw it again. In another Monday Night Football game in 2020 between the Buccaneers and the Rams, Tom Brady completed a pass to himself, and threw it again for a completion. His catch didn't count because the penalty was declined to bring up 4th down, and the second pass was the only throw that went into the stat book.
I'm still trying to figure out how a QB can be called for clipping while tackling the defender that intercepted your ball. See Super Bowl XL. Also in the same game even with the help of instant replay they still gave Ben Raplessburger a TD when he was clearly down a yard short.
Hey, good video. I don’t know anything about video editing, but is there a way to normalize sound? With these old clips you start narrating at a reasonable rate and THEN SUDDENLY ITS SO LOUD I WANNA SCREAM. Can that be fixed?
one thing i wish was included was Tom Brady in 2021 or 2022 when he got it deflected back to him and he instinctively threw it again, he got a penalty for it but that play still lives rent free in my head lol
I'd love to see a video of the most touches for forward momentum. Kick returns where they literal the ball 12 times to score, double reverse fakes that turn into a pass with a pitch back after the catch, etc.
As a Bills fan I remembered Josh Allen catching a pass, but looking through game logs it was thrown by someone else - November 15 2020, from WR Isaiah McKenzie for a 12 yard TD [the game lost on the Hail Murray. :(]
You got VERY CLOSE on Bobby Hebert's last name! The "H" is silent. His name sounds like this: "Bobby A. Bear". Before that Archie Manning also completed a pass to himself, but I don't remember the year.
Was at the bar with my boys watching that Ravens vs Chiefs playoff game and after that play I definitely got a little nervous thinking it was going to be one of those games for Lamar.. then the rest of the game happened
I love the self pass, when I was in college, I kicked an extra point and the line blocked it straight back to me and I ran it in for 2, idk how rare that play would be, I wish I still had it on film.
The freaky batted self pass completion is fun, but what I'm waiting for is the intentional self pass, something some coach actually put in a playbook an called.
The Ravens game was the only Texans game I missed last season, so I didn't realize Stroud's first official NFL completion was to himself. And I sure didn't realize that the same happened with Favre. As if CJ wasn't already in rare enough company...
Funniest part is this means a QB can be called for illegal touching. The ball would somehow have to caught without getting deflected, but the rule states the QB is only an eligible reciever if he is in the Shotgun. If he is under center he is ineligible
In college football, in the 2015 SEC championship, Treon Harris caught a deflected pass he threw and then tried to throw it again, and was correctly penalized for it
reminded of one time in the NFL where a punt was blocked and the punter kicked it again. Apparently that was Michael Dickson of the Seahawks against the Rams early in the 2021 season, and is allowed as long as the ball had not crossed the LOS He was still on the LOS when he punted the 2nd time, like how being on/behind the line at all makes a 1st pass attempt legal XFL/USFL and UFL allow double forward pass if still behind the LOS, and I suppose that could happen with a deflected pass coming back to you
How about an even rarer one: where the passer catches his own pass *without a deflection?* I doubt there's one example in the entire history of the NFL, where until recently a quarterback under center was not an eligible receiver, so it could be done only after the ineligible receivers gain eligibility via a deflection. If you think a deliberate self-pass is insuperably hard, consider that you can make it as a 2-hand underhand toss. Try it yourself and you'll see you can complete passes to yourself of maybe 20 yards, no problem. NCAA made the QB under center an eligible receiver by the 1950s.
McNabb was one of the most athletic quarterbacks of his era. He would be remembered as such however, he ended up being famous for being murdered by his girlfriend.
You're missing the time Brady caught his own pass (this was when he was on the Buccs I think 2021?). It didn't show up on the stat sheet because he did something that no one else here did - he passed it again. This was a penalty, but because the pass was on 3rd down and completed short of the sticks, the Rams declined the penalty so both the second pass and the reception counted
You can always redefine "rarest play" by putting enough conditions on it. Like, has anyone ever gotten credit for more than one tackle on a given down? Could happen if the first tackle results in a fumble (ball stays live but credited as a tackle).
Could some rules guru confirm - if you regain the ball behind the line of scrimmage, and with no ineligible receivers forward of it, are you allowed to throw forward again? In all the instances in this video, it looked like running was probably the better option anyway.
Just to be precise, the reference to Bobby Hebert mispronounces his name. It is not "Hay-bear" but "A-bear" because Bobby was/is a Cajun - which uses French pronunciation.
Only if you're playing under rules allowing more than one forward pass per down. Most people who've ever played football *have* played under such rules, because the most popular rules set, that of the National Federation of State High School Associations, did allow it from some time in the 1940s until about 15 years ago. See, even if the first pass was batted back to where or behind where it was passed from, it still counts as a forward pass.
If Stroud is only as good as Favre, I think Texans fans should be upset. Stroud had one of the best rookie seasons ever. Favre not only had a rookie so miserable that he got traded for spare change found in the sofa, he's only a Hall of Famer because he held the TD record for a few years. He'll probably hold the INT record for decades, since only Tom Brady and Drew Brees have thrown more passes, so it's going to take some combination of longer seasons, longer careers, and more passes thrown per game before anyone gets close. (And then the meta's also going to have to shift back toward defense, because no long-term starter has anywhere near 3.3% of their passes turn into picks anymore.) If there's one guy I'd pull from the Hall of Fame, it'd be Favre for sure, and that's *before* you consider any legal, moral, or ethical concerns about putting that man in such an esteemed position.
rarest play is a double completed double pass for sure. Need to have a pass, deflection caught by the QB, then another pass that gets caught by a receiver but in a way where the opposing team won't accept the penalty such as a 3rd and 20 where this play happens and the gain is only 8. To my knowledge this has happened exactly once in NFL history by Tom Brady in 2020 against the Rams
It can vary based on your league settings. But you typically get 4 pts for a pass TD, a very small amount of yards, 0-1 points for the catch and another 6 points for catching the TD, and another fraction of a point for receiving yards.
@@InterloperBob I guess the real question I'm asking: Would a QB get all the points for this? In other words: 4 for the pass TD + 6 for catching the TD? (Plus whatever for yards and catch.)

Brady threw a pass to himself while with the bucs. Then he threw it again and so the refs threw a flag since that's a penalty. There was a punter on a thursday night game that punted, it was blocked so he punted again and it was allowed. I really feel like throwing it again as long as you are behind the line, should be allowed. It might be allowed in UFL since they do allow double forward pass
