Randomly found your channel when I was watching the PK tutorial video on the Oslo hat and have been enjoying your videos, not gonna lie I got a little giddy when I saw this one was posted! As I move out of the beginner craze of just buying everything and trying to make every fun pattern I see I have been trying to make realistic decisions when I choose my yarn and pattern so this information is super helpful. And your Oslo sweater is stunning that yarn looks so soft and so fluffy 😭😭😭

Yay! I think everyone needs some every day, classic sweaters in their wardrobes and all of these drop shoulders (and raglans) are great options! I love Fiadh so much, it’s such a great color!
Great comparison video! What about adding time required to knit for each design, which one was quickest? I love your end suggestions Caidree, Ozetta, and Aimee Sher are some of my favorite designers. I totally bought the building blocks drop this week 💗.
Great ideas! They all took me about the same amount of time: 1 month. I was really focusing on knitting one per month and was being as monogamous as possible, but it’s doable in about 4 weeks!
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the thorough comparison you provide in this video. I'm not a new knitter, but am new to garments. Knitted a LePouf cardigan (made sizing mistakes so knitting another), and JUST cast on my very first sweater - the Lento. I'm going to come back to this video to pick my next sweater! AND - go watch all your other comparison videos. So, so very informative. (Also in CA - Sacramento area ).

I wasn’t really sure about the differences between ranglan and drop shoulder, and now I not only understand it, but at the beginning I was like” mmh I’m knitting a drop shoulder myself”, and by the end of the video you confirmed it because I saw my WIP on the ravelry bundle😂 (working on the balloon sweater by petite knit) Always a pleasure knitting with you and can’t wait to the next podcast!
Love the comparison! For the sizing tho the petite knit would only fit 49” bust given recommended ease and so on with the others 😊 which is substantially less inclusive
Love this video! So much I need to learn and you explain things so well. I still don’t get how to figure out the knitting math. For example changing needle size and choosing a size because of that 🤔
Thank you! Knitting math can be a bit confusing at first, so I get it! I might take this as a suggestion to make a video on knitting math in the future.
Size inclusion is an interesting issue for me because while I appreciate having large sizes available, I am on the other end of the spectrum and even the smallest size sometimes is too large if I want to have less ease.
Just settling in to watch this video and it occurs to me that you might also want to look into saddle shoulder construction and contiguous construction. Contiguous is my fave (and there are many versions of this technique but Susie Meyers is well known for her designs). Cocoknits Method is one version of this construction.

Hello! Nice to see a knitter and content creator from my area! I'm in San Jacinto CA! I would like your opinion on something that is a constant concern for me, and maybe for you too? Given our shared weather and outdoor temperature concerns, what do you think is the best fiber for sweaters. I would love to wear them more than 2 months out of the year :D
Hey Pattie! To be honest, most of my sweaters so far are in merino wool. I want to start working with more cotton, linen, and other blends to see what I like best in the warmer months too! I’ll make sure to keep the podcast updated as I work with more alternative yarns! ♥️
I get your frustration with pre-blocked vs blocked measurements, particularly when a pattern says to knit up to a certain length. I’m always wondering if they meant measurement as I’m knitting or blocked, because then I have to partially block my WIP? I know we have gauge swatches but those also call out blocked measurements. I just roll the dice and pray.
Really enjoyed the information, although discussing who to support and only supporting those who are all size inclusive I don’t think is right. When you mention Petite Knits, think about that; it’s PETITE Knits. Therefore she’s designing for petite sized people. Just saying.
I understand the size inclusive perspective, however, I disagree with it. This mentality is limiting. I believe by ostracizing designers, and particularly new designers, because their patterns don't go up to a "certain size" from the knitting community, you are hobbling new creators. Realize not everyone has the knowledge or resources to upsize patterns thereby making it even more difficult for new designers to get started.
Hi Laurie, thank you for your comment. I definitely see this perspective, but I actually think there are enough tools and resources available to learn the math needed to grade for larger sizes. I understand that not everyone may be able to afford hiring a tech editor to help with the math, but there are a lot of free resources available, and many designers are open on how they grade for larger sizes. Additionally, if someone is serious about becoming a designer, the earlier they take the time to gain this knowledge, the better. All the patterns I talked about in this video are simple, classic shapes that should be relatively easy to grade for larger sizes. There’s no texture, no colorwork, and no intricate design details that would potentially limit the sizing. From my perspective as well, I want to be transparent about the sizing of patterns I am sharing with a wide audience. I don’t want someone to see a pattern I make that they love and then not be able to make it for themselves bc the pattern is not size inclusive.

I’ve heard from a lot of people that set in sleeves were their least favorite haha, but you should definitely try a drop shoulder!

Which of these sweater patterns might be best to understand for a beginner knitter?
I would say maybe the Dear Duomo or the Clove Sweater! I think those have great descriptions in the patterns!
