I thought you were an engineer just because of the way you seem so familiar, and at ease, when you describe various components. Very cool that you are self taught.

After thirty years in the industry, I can tell you there are two types of engineer... those who went into it for the paycheck - they tend to be competent but nothing more, and then there are those who went into engineering because they have an innate talent and passion for it. Those are far less common, but worth their weight in gold.

I think an argument can be made that he IS an engineer. Just because he doesn't have a piece of paper saying he is, doesn't mean he's not. But I totally get what you're saying - the world revolves around pieces of paper, oftentimes to the detriment of society.

One of the things I most appreciate about you and the channel is your genuine desire to share and teach. Your videos are clear, concise and well paced. I appreciate you not trying to impress us with video skills; it's about the content. Humble, forthright, and down to earth, you're a breathe of fresh air. Keep up the good work; and if it becomes too much like work, dial it back. Appreciate all you do.

We run across TH-cam channels all day long. Most of them mean..well..not much. Then you run across those that mean the most. Jeremy, I must say, your vids are wonderful. I like your personality, how you speak and how humble you are. Begging is asking for something for nothing. Producing videos is work (I've made a few). Putting your work out there and saying, "Hey, support this if you would like to do so," is providing folks with the OPPORTUNITY to reimburse you for the value you have given. It's a relationship something like public television or public radio. Go for it.

    • @thunderbirdizations
      @thunderbirdizations ปีที่แล้ว

I think the reason he might see it as begging is because he genuinely enjoys teaching, translating, & sharing his knowledge. Some people don’t consider things work if it’s enjoyed and would be done for free

I am a hobby woodworker and love being in the shop. I stumbled upon your channel several years ago and I have watched a lot of your videos. A lot of things that you get excited about I do as well. I am astonished at learning how things work. Now a disclaimer must be made right here, I am not even in the same universe as your intelligence with engineering at all, but I know I can learn. I am not going to be a CAD artist or an engineer at anytime but I do love coming to channels like yours where a person like me who has limited knowledge of the subject coming into it but at the end of the video can leave with a smile because I have learned something new. That to me is what TH-cam should be all about. I just wanted to say that you are a blessing and I appreciate what you do and the time you take to make these videos. This world needs more people like you my friend. God bless you and have a wonderful day.

I agree. At his age I was driven and didn't care about making money. I would spend 24h a day at my job (sometimes but 10h days was not uncommon) to get something done right BUT life hit me hard and I never recovered. I lost my career and after looking at the modern IT field I am glad it is gone (let Asia have it). I still tinker and I love learning something new so I still have his drive but the passion died I think, or should I say life beat it out of me. This guy has a future as he is humble and just a straight up guy.

I've been a CAD Draftsman and Designer for 20 years. I really enjoy the engineering field but it is rough in Houston as most of our jobs are oil and gas related and there is very little work here currently. I'm actually trying to start up a wood workings business to supplement some investing income. Solidworks is great software. If you don't know, many companies will have a home use license where you can use it at home. You will have to speak with your Solidworks rep. I've recently been teaching myself Fusion 360, as it's free. It's a more basic package but I can output to my CNC router I'm about to assemble. Keep on keeping on!

I grew up taking anything I found at the local junk yard and taking it home. My mother would always ask "What are you doing with that ?" My response was always " I'm taking it apart to see what's inside." I saved many parts and reused most. I still do the same. Luckily my wife loves doing the same. I hope that this inspires today's youth to do the same.

It was then that I saw your post on engineering for woodworking and that interests me a whole lot and so I clicked and then subscribed. I thank you for your work, you're literally everything I've been looking for with increasing my wood working skills.

Jeremy, another career path with your skill set would be becoming an operating engineer. It pays well and its a trade that requires constant schooling (learning) and offers a wide variety of daily challenges on the job. It’s a trade where you will never learn it all. It requires a lot of city licenses. I for example have a 3rd grade boiler license, a refrigeration license, electrical license, and schooling in hydraulics, pneumatics and motor controls. I also have plumbing and pipe fitting skills. I can also weld and have a good grasp of power and hand tools, along with computer and people skills, just as you have. . The work environments change with different jobs. For example, before I got in the trade I used to wire houses and condos. But my first job out of school (industrial plant maintenance) was at a meat packing plant. It was chilly damp environment but was a union job with good benefits. The next job was working for hostess cake ( ya the twinkie folks) and I was there for 15 years. Then I worked at a bread plant. Then I had an opportunity to work for my trade school instructor who, after teaching, started his own engineering firm. This job wasn’t union but the pay was better, similar benefits and my first supervisory position. Funny how life offers so many paths. This job was working in high rise buildings. I’ worked in television stations, art museums, a lot of high security office buildings with large computer servers.. I have been in every building on the microsoft campus. Anyway, it was a great career that offered many challenges and rewarding experiences. I don;t think it’s the norm for people to work there whole career in a job they love with so many different challenges to overcome. Now in retirement, I get to tinker and get inspiration from folks like you Jeremy.

Dude, you are the coolest. Self-taught. CAD designer by day, engineer by night. You have natural talent, and that is the root being a good engineer. Love your stuff, keep up the great work. I am a Mech Eng, but need to learn some practical electronics, and you are very helpful.

Thank you for sharing your story jeromey. You truly are the marvelous Wonder on TH-cam. I like your genuineness and how well you can teach what you have learned to others. It's great to see people like you on TH-cam, your ideas your trials or what you're going through with your project. Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next video.

I love this guy. I am 71, did an engineering apprenticeship an age ago, went to a good university and got an engineering degree. After 6 years I quit and went into computing as I didn't think all of that had given me the skills (but I can work a milling machine). We are training people wrong - all you educators of engineers that might stumble on this please give it thought. If we could take Jeremy and clone him many times we might put things right!

Great vid. Even if you aren't going to talk about your Patreon much, you should still put the link in the description of your videos so the people that want it can find it easily and get to it while they are thinking about it.

Videos like this should be required viewing for every kid growing up that's about to enter the adult world. Just keep being who you are and doing what you do. It's making a huge impact that you may never truly understand the magnitude of. Thanks Jeremy.

Jeremy, being raised by parents and grandparents that farmed and raised families during the depression I naturally am a scrounger. Friends know I will take most anything that is free and most likely find a use for or make a buck from it. I like to pass on my knowledge but do not have the gift that you do for sharing. I shunned YT for a long time but now believe it is amazing! Not only the knowledge shared but I believe it is bringing us "common" folks of this world together in a way never before possible! Thanks for sharing a bit of your world with us. Jay

A weird TH-cam reality is that people engage with video content in a non-linear fashion; we see something interesting (often suggested by an algorithm), then go backward and forward in time to find additional material. This morning, I watched your video on engineering considerations for woodworking project (DR FARM). Your process was excellent and is the type of content I am most interested in: problem solving and a focus on principal thinking rather than a basic "how to" video that is limited to one discrete project. All that to say, watching this video after the fact gave me insight into why your video content is so excellent. Your openness and humility to learn something new (the initial engineering internship) is both inspiring and encouraging. Additionally, (as is true of many content creators), your generosity of spirit in sharing what you know and your sincere desire to help others grow is commendable. Keep up the great work, and thank you.

Thankyou Jeremy for your great videos you humble guy. You get me motivated to build my own shop equipment, Built a spindle sander by mounting a drill press upside down in a small table the same height as my table saw. I can lower the spindle and use it as an extension table for saw. Also built x y axis table for router using roller skate wheels for sliders, anyway thanks for the down to earth knowlage you provided looking forward to more.

Keep up the good work and attitude about it. I understand what you mean by having the knowledge of Solidworks , I went back to school after my retirement to learn Solidworks and it's one of the best things that you can do for yourself if you have any engineering ambition's to pursue.

Jeremy, thanks for inviting us all into your life! I think your outlook on Patreon and video making... your purpose... is a very well thought out and balanced one. I think you articulated my thoughts exactly when it comes to paid vs. free and what that purpose really should be.
It might be off-topic for this video, but to put it out there before I forget... I like your ability and drive to hustle, re-purpose, recycle... or however it should be described- to support learning, experimenting with new things, improving, and just generally, “tinkering,” as you put it! I describe the scrounging part to my family as, “I am a collector of fine antiquities and oddities...” but I guess it barely changes the fact that there’s a bunch of “crap” squirreled away, in every spot I have available to me!!
Your washing machine videos prompted me to salvage components from my recent bout with planned obsolescence in appliances. I saved the motor, the electromechanical drive engagement, and the stainless wash tub. That piece fits perfectly on my charcoal grille... Now, I’ve just finished my third batch of jerky. For sixty bucks I have a PID temperature controlled, jerky MACHINE- that’ll make safe, smoked jerky at 1/5 the price of a retail smoker. You never know where this shared activity will lead you! (I had no plans of smoking meat and cheese... seemed like a hassle.)
Anyhow, it was great to hear that your interest and determination landed you a position in engineering! I have a very similar history, hate to see things pitched when they still have purpose, and enjoy the same shop work you do, so it’s like watching a best friend! I really like what I’ve seen so far, and I’m a bit late to the party!
Best of luck going forward, and into 2018 (Have a happy New Year!) I just wanted to say thanks and keep up the great work!

I found your channel really by accident I was looking for a motor to power a project I'm building or better yet in the early design stage ( a duel axis solar tracker) not a state secret 😀. Using everyday items that you find anywhere and most of all cheap and affordable that anyone with basic skills could build. I'm a electrician by trade and found your channel extremely helpful. Trust me
your explanation of motors is spot on, take it from someone who's been in the trade 35plus years. Keep up the good work and
keep it free, sure accept the help but what I notice is some channels it's all about making the money and they forget the reason they posted content was about sharing their knowledge. I will keep watching I like what you do
