- Winter is a challenge for anyone living the nomadic or off grid lifestyle, especially in Canada where temperatures reach lows of -50. Building a rig that can handle these conditions is not easy, but involving a water system is another thing entirely. This is important to me, because this rig is not just for camping and exploring, this is my full time home. I want to be able to cook, clean, work, shower, use the bathroom and sleep in any temperature, without too much discomfort, and we are getting very close. This was a pretty extreme testing situation, because I don't have plans to spend much time within this temperature range because it is just too dangerous. Never the less, it took -30 to finally sink in enough cold to freeze the pipes. I think that we would have been able to handle this temperature if I bumped the heaters up to level three and opened the cupboard doors, but if we can handle -20, I am happy with that.
It feels great to be back in the rig and traveling around enjoying the outdoors, instead of being cooped up in the shop. I am so thankful to have a shop to work and live in during the winter season, but it makes my life quite depressing. Soon were going to have to tackle a few big jobs on the rig, which will bring us back into the shop, but after that, she'll need some time on the road before starting our summer expedition. Looking forward to some test adventures, and the big summer adventure.

I really appreciate this, thank you. I think my folks were definitely a little concerned when I chose to pursue such odd avenues in my life, but my father always tried to push me away from the logging industry. He was an early predictor of the struggles coming to the industry, and I am very happy to be heading a different direction, though very thankful to have some industry experience to keep the rig going. :)

My friend drives an old VW diesel and he put a push/pull cable in attached to the throttle linkage for high idle during warmups. Pretty simple set up and fully mechanical.

FYI....Dustin, when I lived in cold country, I was told to unplug the block heater before I started the motor.(Ford 6.9) You might ask around and see if there's any truth to this.....Keep up the great work.(:>)
I echo this , love the drone perspective . Curious how you developed that skill ? Just buy a cheap drone to start , it`ll get crashed multiple times , go out and start flying ? I am a total novice but keen to fly one . Any advice you have is welcomed
Dustin as a fellow British Columbian, I think you should have explained the burning slash piles. There must a lot of your viewers with question marks above their head. This said, as usual, your videography is excellent. The drone shots of you driving your rig must have some people convinced that you have an army of helpers. Maybe, one cold winter day when you are looking for ideas, you should reveal some of your videography secrets? Please continue. This old man really appreciates your skill and work.

Good morning! I have lived in Alberta for the last 45 years and this winter reminds me of 1994 where it was mild until January, just like this year. It's nothing new for us. Mild, January and February kick our butts with the cold and snow, and do NOT plant a garden until after May long weekend as there is a good chance we get snow then too!

Pro tip for steak prep: 24 hr dry age. Give the steak a generous crusting of salt and pepper both sides. Or, my favorite, good old Montreal Steak Spice. Place the salted steak on a rack (I use a standard baking cooling rack), on top of a plate so there is some air flow around the steak, then put in the fridge for 24 hours. I like to pan fry the steak to rare in clarified butter or bacon fat to give it a nice crust. Let rest for 5-7 minutes. Enjoy with your favorite beverage. Cheers from the Kootenays 😉
Hey Dustin, love how you are dialing in your rig for the extreme temps. Say, you might want to check out the diesel block heater Timmy over on Truck House Life just installed on his rig. It actually heats and circulates the coolant through the block on his diesel and he seems really happy with it, as he was out in similar conditions. Might be a backup to your block heater/generator solution.

Too bad the same cant be said for his condiment selection...? Wouldn't have even bothered eating anything but bread, without salad dressing, steak sauce/seasoning, and cocktail sauce! What's the point of wasting all that $???
Nice winterizing, those little diesel heaters rock! pro tip - leave your bottom cabinet doors open an inch or so overnight (and while driving) to let the warm air circulate, the lines run close to the walls which of course aren't properly insulated either. Another is to put a gallon or 2 of rv antifreeze in your empty black/grey tanks before you start using them, often the tanks won't freeze, but it will at the valves when you try to empty them. Congrats on adding another season to your adventures.
I would be so happy to see you exploring the Canadian Arctic. There are so many ice roads and remote communities and stunning landscapes that are almost never filmed.

Dustin, I’m no HVAC genius, but I do know that most warm air heaters have cold air returns. Without a return, it’s like blowing into a bottle. Not sure if you already have a return path from your battery area, but if not, you might consider it. I love what you do!
I love your channel. What a way to start the weekend. I live in 108 Mile Ranch and our temperatures are about the same as Williams Lake. I so look forward to the shots that your drone takes, they are always beautiful but todays were breathtaking. You have captured my favourite time of winter when the snow coveres the trees, bushes etc. and the water takes on a chilly side as well.
This does seem to be quite a challenge to get it rolling during the winter… A lot to remember a lot to do. Knowing you Dustin you’re gonna find a way you’re gonna get us back out there and we’re going to see some great winter adventures. A few suggestions...
1) Think about some bluetooth temperature sensors, get ones that have double or triple A batteries versus small watch batteries. You can check the temps from the phone.
2) Not sure the insulation is worth putting on the pipes inside the heated basement compartment.
3) Truma Aqua go hot water heater... It is awesome, it has a recirculating feature that will keep your hot water lines heated. This is also on demand, so you never waste water trying to get hot water to the shower or faucet. The downside, it is propane.
4) Does your camper have an outside faucet? If it does, you should consider installing shutoffs as far into the heated area as possible. I did that on my northern lite rig, otherwise that will freeze. I used to blow the lines out before shutting the faucet off.
Your rig is awesome with that cummins and a manual transmission!

Hi there Dustin, another awesome video. Have you considered tapping in to your engines cooling system to keep your water from freezing? If you t in the heater core lines you can run a loop all the way to the back. Run them tight against the water lines and wrap it in insulation. With a few ball valves you can shut it off in the summer. It worked on my old motor home. Thank you for taking us on another one of your adventures. Stay safe out there my guy.
Thats a great idea. im now thinking of utilizing your idea for in floor radiant heating and perhaps a copper coil base/plate under the battery.
Add another heater core , any one will work , at the end of the loop . A small 12v fan behind that core will push warm air around . Had setup like this on a sailboat , worked well . Insulate ! as much as possible , I may be wrong but did not see insulation in the front pass through space
When I lived in Calgary AB, I endured many extreame cold snaps as low as -40c...my Jeep's block heater saved my hiney TONS of times! Glad you have one for the rig!

Really like that little skidder in your shop. It looks very much like the little John Deere 440C I used to have many years ago. In Northern NH we used to have cold weather like you have. Used to build a little camp fire under it and it'd start like a spring day. Truck looks ready to go to the Arctic.

Wow, this video is a real beauty. I'm from New Zealand and I have seen snow once. I was about 6 years old and the family had to travel about 400kms south to the middle of the North Island. Your photography is absolutely fabulous and paints a lovely picture of how beautiful it is in your neck of the woods. You air on Sunday mornings here and it is an invigorating way to start the day. You could also try opening your interior cupboard doors at night you let heat in by your water lines.

When you start your truck at those temps while it's warming up put your transfer case in neutral and the transmission in gear, it will move the oil in your drivetrain before you move the truck, great video and camper set up.

Not a great idea, the transfercase oil pump runs off the output, you'll be spinning stuff in the transfercase for a while without oil being pumped.

Hey Dustin ! Just a warning that insulating bubble foil you put on the batteries is conductive and will short them you should use something else in the top of them that won't touch the terminals. Love the content!

The crunchy snow, plugging my car in at work or going out every couple of hrs to start it, driving on square tires etc etc. I really struggled through those cold winters but watching you toasty warm, eating a fabulous meal, just seems like the right thing to do. Love that rig! Watched the build last year,awesome. If you can spare the extra weight a cast iron frying pan would improve your stove performance because of the mass. ( minor tweak). I enjoy your travels, stay well and safe travels.

One thing that you might be interested in is Ruuvi temperature sensors. They are Bluetooth sensors that are super easy to install. I live on a boat and installed about six of them, one inside, one outside, one in the compartment where my outside shower waterline runs, one in the engine room etc. They are very easy to use an install and I highly recommend them. With them you could monitor the temperatures around your rig from the mobile app and create alarms, etc. It looks like the shunt you installed is a Victron, they have a device called a Cerbo GX which although pricey is an amazing unit and all the sensors will tie into it and you can see everything on the VRM app. I am not in any way affiliated with Ruuvi, just use them and like them 👍

Another awesome video, Dustin. Looks like you're getting it figured. I do recommend electric battery blankets for the truck. -30 isn't too bad but if you ever hit a night where it goes down to -40 or below (like it does up here at times) the block heater won't do much good because it won't crank over fast enough if the batteries are too cold.

I'm glad you were able to use the deep freeze we experienced all over BC to your advantage! Great way to check out all the winter improvements! When our Dodge diesel truck has to sit for weeks in the Yukon in the winter while we are out at the cabin, we never know if it will start when we go out. We used to use a tiger torch under the oil pan when we had a Chev diesel. Stupidly, Dodge built their more recent trucks with plastic oil pans instead of metal, so we aren't able to use that method anymore. Now, we haul the genie out to plug in the block heater. Trev went out to change the oil in the truck after the -50C stint, when it had warmed up to -22C, something that was supposed to get done months ago, lol! Now at least it has winter oil in it! lol! I haven’t had to resort to the fire under the engine method yet, but my pan is metal so at least I can. Hahaha. Not sure I’m interested in challenging -50 quite yet though. Lol

I have the same diesel heater in my sleeper but mine pulls fuel directly from the tank of the truck. No refilling the small tank. Keep up the great work.

Love your videos Dustin. One tip that might help with the water is installing a blow out fitting on the system. When your done with the water for the night blow out the system and then you should have water in the morning after opening the system back up.

Dustin , I like your truck/Bigfoot setup . Enjoying seeing the remote places you explore , been to a couple and hope to look at more this year . I have a 1999 Bigfoot MH , 7.3 diesel , installed lithiums , solar system . You would not have to use that generator to top up the batteries if you installed a DC-DC device . The alternator charges the lithiums as you drive . I rarely have to turn on my generator . Don`t ever plan to camp in -30 , saw enough of that growing up in AB

Thank you to you and others who do videos about testing what rigs can handle. When I lived at 83 Mile House I used to love the cold weather with the blue skies. However, I now don't miss the -20 to -40 cold. I'm older now and think I'm going to be one who heads south for the winter or stay at least on Vancouver Island. 😀

Australia is also having some weird weather it’s the middle of summer here and it’s cold and rainy not hot and dry like every year they say this year is gonna be the worst we have seen but nope just cold and rainy but we do have a solar maximum coming so power and internet will be gone but I enjoy your videos
I got the opposite up north, it's fething hot and humid.
That's probably due to our good friend the El Nino, after the cold snap here in Canada, its predicted to become above seasonal temps in the northern hemisphere and cold gloomy in the southern hemisphere.

Love your channel! I have almost that exact camper but not as macked out lol. It may help your most recent frozen pipes issue to pull out the drawers under the sink at night so that the heat from the camper can get to them. Keep up the awesome videos!
I think if I left the cupboards open it would have helped a lot. I’ll definitely try to make it a habit in the winter.
@@Destination_Adventurewe do that for our cottage when we are not there. We keep the electric heat at 5C. The kitchen pipes are against an outer wall so we leave the cupboard doors open.
I have a heater that extracts gasoline from my van's gas tank. I rarely have the heater on as I am sleeping when temps will be above -5 C overnight. I use the heater to heat up the space before bed & upon getting up when needed. Any temps below -5 C I will adjust the thermostat so as it keeps the inside temperature at about +5 C. I like it cold!
I also have a 12 volt mattress heater - " you lay on top of the heater". as opposed to a heated quilt. I only use this before bed (& turn it off before sleeping) & occasionally upon awakening. Works really well for me.
I also have a Milwaukee M12 powered Jacket (tight fit so heat transfers well). ( I chose the M12 because I have several M12 batteries - that mostly will have a charge - to swap from one to another of the M12 tool I carry in my rig "drill- fan- light - tire pump & reciprocating saw" If the inside temp is above 5 C I will likely just turn the jacket on & it is more than enough for morning duties - it certainly eliminates the need to turn the heater on for most mornings.. I am more than happy with thIs jacket.
After having slept in the van for a total of 18 month over the last 5 years my getting warm system has evolved to this. Works for me.
Another Winner Dustin. Especially love the drone shot where you look like you are pulling out to pass someone, lol. And the camera shot through the barbed wire fence at ground height as you drove past. I wonder if your Viewers realize you had to stop, place and focus the camera on a spot, walk back to your truck, drive by, stop, walk back and pick up the camera, rinse and repeat so many times, and then edit all that effort and time into five seconds of 'action'. Thank you for your effort and skill; really enjoyable viewing...and yeah, minus 32 down here in 108 that day. Keep 'em comin' eh?
