That’s not really how to safety wire, your kinda just tying it to the bike. For that to work you’d be drilling the hole in the cap and case as before, bring your wire around clockwise to prevent rotation and any movement and passing the wire through your hole and doing a quick spin on the end to prevent drag out.
No. It’s not how it’s done at all 😂😂. I just do it this way for my oil cap because they require it at some tracks when you ride advanced group. And I don’t wanna keep doing it when I have to change my oil 😂😂😂😂😂
Exactly . He should use actual safety wire first. Id use .032" size. And technically it's a negative safety. So 2 "no-gos" at least by aviation standards. It's also sloppy and the pigtail won't work either. But i guess as a tether it's ok?
Everyone so far is incorrect. Safety wire, proper safety wire, holds torque on the fastener esp if it’s unloading. It’s not just for holding parts on, it actually maintains torque. Most tracks require a minimal amount of safety wiring, among them is any fastener or cap containing fluid. Yah, oil caps rarely just come off, but it’s a cap that hides fluid - lock it
There is a difference between a tether and a safety wire. Maybe it's better to let a mechanic change your oil if you lose the cap often enough to need this.
But actual advise to Suzuki riders: Suzuki is criminally cheap when it comes to important stuff like loctite and grease. If it needs to be greased it’s under greased, and if it’s important it probably needs loctite. Yes, on your brand new bike too.

We use this stuff all the time in aviation maintenance (often called lockwire) Only tip I could give to make this lockwire a lot better, would be to hand twist the first three twists so that they’re nice and tight, before pulling the strands tight, and close together then twisting.
All the gsxrs I've owned have never had a problem with anything backing out or even coming loose for that matter. Always done my own work except tires and follow the specs. They are there for a reason.

Gotta safety wire my brake and clutch lever bolts lol. Just lost my clutch lever pivot bolt, good thing the lever still worked without it. Noticed it was loose on the way home from an accident, tightened it with my fingers and thought, that should be alright for the couple mile ride home. Nope, loosened all the way and disappeared by the time I got home. Havent ridden in 5 years, finally got in a financial position to own a bike again so I bought one a couple weeks ago, like 3 rides in, laid my bike down with a rookie mistake, forgot to put the kickstand up leaving the gas station, leaned into a lefthand curve and it wouldnt lean 😂, options were ride straight off the bluff, turn the bars too hard left and flip in front of the bike, or just throw my weight to the left and lay it on the side, so I picked that one
Doesn’t there need to be tension to prevent whatever you are wiring from backing out at all? In your vid you would be able to twist the cap a little bit and on some bolts like the coolant drain bolt leaks are a real possibility. Thoughts?
Yes 100%. At some tracks they would not let you on with something like this. The idea behind safety wire is to have tension on the wire between the 2 points so they don’t loosen. The oil cap for sure wouldn’t be lost the way he did it.
I should try that. Safety wire my oil fill to my hand so I can't forget to put it back in. I waterproofed one boot and had to buy a new cap. Rubber stopper from Home Depot got me home though.
Former aircraft mechanic here. This is a cool idea but You are making a tether not doing safety wire. This type of wire will break with repeated bending, for the use you are trying to do. You should use small gauge wire cable with crimp connectors for making tethers. It will work much better.
I worked in aviation *working on airplanes* Now its a good thought to keep from loosing the oil cap but to keep the bolts from from comming loose you need thread the wire properly with the braid wrapping in the counter clockwise direction of the bolt making sure that its holding the bolt loose so it doesnt want to break loose as well as wrapping around the back side of the bolt and make sure its tight and the braided wire isnt loose when its twisted as well and make sure there arent too many wraps or else itll make the braid loose and not too few twists or else itll be loose as well. but again its a fantastic thought.
One point to mention: when wiring two nuts together braid wire and the guide it around in such way that it would tighten one nut while loosening the other.

The purpose of safety wire is to prevent things from moving/turning. You demonstrated using safety wire as a lanyard. A swaging kit would have been a better choice
If you're gonna safety wire use Malin Co. Stainless wire. Not Galvenized. Malin makes whatever size you need from .25 to .32 to .40 whatever they've typically got it. And make sure to watch a video on an aircraft mechanic doing safety wiring. Takes some practice but don't wanna give new track guys the wrong idea or they won't pass the regulations.
