Braided Rug Dollhouse Tutorial -

- In this tutorial, I'll take you step-by-step through the best way I've found to make a realistic 1:12 scale dollhouse miniature braided rug!
IMPORTANT NOTE: Since filming this, I have learned the importance of using REMOVABLE double-sided tape, and NOT permanent double-sided tape. Look at the labels carefully! In the Scotch brand blue/green label is removable. Red label is NOT. You may destroy the rug trying to get it off the board if you use the permanent tape! Yes, I learned this the hard way :P

Thank you! I watched half of your tutorial on Christmas Eve and braided, (and braided). On Christmas Day I watched the second half and created my rug and it came out perfect. On the day after Christmas I went out and bought the transfer backing and now I have a perfect little rug for my witches house. Thank you for this step by step tutorial.

I found a little pack of small iron-on patches for jeans. The size and shape is about the size of a door mat for a 1:12 scale miniature house. I plan to use your method of braiding, and use the patches as a backing that I can iron on. 🤞🏼

Great tutorial, thank you! Could you please say what weight of thread you're using, and what length you need? Also, what did you do with the safety pin after you attached it to the thread? Thanks so much.
Thanks for watching! I just used the regular DMC embroidery floss and I pick three different colors (so three "hanks" total) and I just braid them entirely, the whole thing--whatever length that turns out to be! I add the safety pin so that I have something to tape to my work surface as an anchor that doesn't interfere with the braiding. After I'm done braiding, I remove the safety pin 🙂 Hope that helps!
@@NasusMiniatures - Thanks! I've made a couple of these now. I see that the paper on Pellon Wonder Under is meant to be removed so that you can press the fabric to a backing. Have you tried that? One lady on you tube places a string under it so that she can lift the string and make it easier to remove the paper. But maybe the rug is not strong enough to remove the paper ... ?
Did you mention how long the braid should be to make a certain size rug?
I just braid the whole length of the DMC hank to make this size of rug. You could always use less of the braid to make a smaller rug 😊
If I wanted to make this in half scale (1:24) would I have to use only 3 strands of floss, instead of 6 for each one, or would it still look ok using the six strands? Absolutely LOVE this tutorial, btw. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! I think that all depends on how thick you want your rug 😋 You could try 3 strands of each colour instead of 6. And naturally, you can also use less of the finished braid and make a smaller diameter rug 🙂
@@NasusMiniatures Right. I was planning on making it smaller in diameter, but wasn't sure if the six strands would make it too thick and look wonky. I suppose I could always do it both ways. If it doesn't look right with 6 I'll just keep going and make a 1:12 scale, then redo it with 3. Thank you for responding. Greatly appreciated.

Hi. Great results, but Im having trouble braiding the thread. Everything's uneven. I think my thread is too thin.

Hi, thanks for watching! I use regular DMC embroidery thread (Walmart, Michaels, etc.) and I don't separate any strands (so I use all six strands). I use three different colours like this for the braid. It's possible that your thread is too thin! Also, uneven tension during braiding may cause some unevenness (like if you braid tighter together for a bit, and then braid more relaxed and spread out later on). Hope that helps! 🙂
@@NasusMiniatures Thanks for tips. I think my problem was a combination of thin thread and uneven braiding (as you described) . I ended up cording the thread (candy-cane stripe) and that looked pretty good. Next up going to try your iron transfer technique. cheers!

I use one full hank of DMC Floss for each colour (if that makes sense) 😊
Were you worried about damage to your clear quilting ruler?
No, it wasn't very expensive. But I've also made dozens of rugs on it since this video and it s still perfectly fine 🙂

These are just regular DMC embroidery threads (six strand). I use all six strands (no seperating) of three different colours 🙂
