Dream Theater is the American Rush. Incredible musicianship across the board and proggy as all hell. Their songs are all masterpieces because they are supreme masters of all they touch.

There is an amazing, yet very sad story behind this song. Mike Portnoy (the drummer) had a lesson one day in one of his classes, and the instructor taught everyone about seizing the day ("carpe diem"). He suggested that everyone give their parents a big hug/kiss, and tell them how much they mean to them when they got home that day, because anything could happen at any time. Mike's mom was leaving on a plane that night, and he made her importance known before she left. The plane crashed and she died. This song is about this whole concept of appreciating and seizing each day. If anyone wants to read Mike's tweet where he details this story, check it out here: dreamtheater.club/questions/question/what-is-a-change-of-seasons-about/

I bet you know my uncle Greg Walker. Major distributor of progressive music. Thanks for doing Dream Theater. I’ve tried to get Greg into them for years, but he love Portnoy the drummer from Dream Theater because he played with Spocks Beard and Neal Morse for so many years. Anyway, cheers!

Funny that you mentiin "Jazz" at one point in the song. In DT's earlier days, especially with initial keyboarder Kevin Moore, there were often parts where the guitar and bass were playing _ostinato_ lines on the lower strings, and they keyboard would overlay them with jazzy extended chord-progressions. Sometimes there'd be a clean or chorused guitar arpeggiating on top.
Sadly, those days are gone, it's mostly _unisono_ riffing now, between the guitar and keys. The reason I love early DT a lot more than recent DT (even though current the keyboarder is arguably much better, technically) is because they were _tastier_ with all those souped-up jazz harmonies. Keys were used for texture and soundscapes, not for "noodling".

Oh man you need to do a full album reaction of their best concept album Metropolis 2: Scenes From a Memory. The whole album tells a cool story that involves hypnosis, past lives, murder, and redemption. It is the first album of theirs to feature their current keys wizard Jordan Rudess. Rudess went to Juliard for classical composition at age 9. That should tell you how monstrous he is, and his hero is Keith Emerson. You might also want to check out the instrumental band Liquid Tension Experiment, which features 3 members of Dream Theater, and the AMAZING Tony Levin on bass/stick. I would do their epic "When the Water Breaks."

Hey Dean, I’m glad your finally giving Dream Theater a go as I think they have a lot to offer . I found your channel searching Rush guitar lessons and have enjoyed them greatly( although that upside down thing throws me off haha)then red discovered you threw Band Maid videos. I searched your channel and correct if I’m wrong but I didn’t see any from Spock’s Beard or Neil Morse side project Trans Atlantic. Being the prog guy I assume you know of them but if not an introduction is a must.
If you don’t know of them then I suggest you try out the album Snow or maybe V by Spock’s beard. I believe this would be-right up your ally

Love dream theatre but feel that this track wanders rather with abrupt changes that speak of some of the parts being mashed rather than woven together. Love every individual bit of it but would have liked a bit more overall structure and more managed connections between the sections. Their musicianship and the quality of the sections are unchallengeable but compared to classic prog like yes or Genesis it is a bit disconnected. A smorgasbord of a piece rather than a casserole.
