I bought the squier baritone because I wanted a low boi that people could actually buy, AND THEN THE DANG THING SOLD OUT!!! I expressed my woes to Sweetwater and they agreed to line me up with the Gretsch G5260T Electromatic Jet Baritone, but will I like it as much as the Squier? Tune in to find out.

Very true. I have the 3 pickup g5622t I think? A bad ass green with 50’s teardrop centerline hollow body shape.
It’s insane and I only paid 200 for it.
Was a wall hanger some rich dude had and the set screw was loose on volume so he thought it was shot. lol
He wanted 500 cause it was never played and he had case and all the case goodies. His wife just bought as something to look at 😳. Neither played.
I noticed the screw and offered $200 cause I had that much on me. He took it.
Got home, screwdriver tightened set screw…. it and it’s perfect.
      I set it up. Worth 200 😂
But I want this 30 inch. Ideally im a Fender guy. And I love jaguars. I play bass too and tried a squire bass vi but I can’t stand squire ESPECIALLY WHEN GRETSCH electros are so cheap and insanely well made for very little more.
My Tele partcaster warmoth neck is defective. Might just make that into a 63’ baritone lol.
I know they don’t exist but I made mine to match a 60-63 tele. Allparts has b srock necks cheap with dings or ugly spots but only cosmetic blems…
Well I been relicing fenders for 20 years.
A blem at 1/3 the cost to me is almost wanted cause I am gonna blemish it a whole lot more 😆

I have a standard size guitar that I converted into a baritone tuned guitar, as I enjoy the low pitch. I've since converted that guitar back to standard tuning, and have started using the "Poly Capo" block on my HX Stomp to switch to baritone pitch. Works pretty well, can be instantly done, and doesn't change the string length or require another guitar and strings. Technology to the rescue.

I am both a guitar and bass player
Wax chillin in a shop one day and they had all vintage used gear.
We used to jam there a lot; as the owner played everthing.
His son was playing the drums, so I grabbed a Bass VI squire and didn’t realize it was a bass vi till I felt 6 strings. Was the “pawn” version.
Let me just say, I have this thing about Squire. I am a fender freak and can’t stand cheesy fender.
Like I want nitro lacquer vintage spec correct herl truss if it’s gonna be called vintage it should be vintage spec 🤷🏻‍♂️
Anyways…. That thing…. It played like my geddy Lee mij bass.
After we jammed the owner told he to tune it open like I play my guitars and throw Verb on….😮😮😮😮
Dude… it’s a bass and the baddest rhythm guitar ever ever.
I am a rhythm player. This thing through my Shoegaze board was insanity with a rubberneck delay and stereo reverb.
Let’s just say if I could only have one guitar as a bass/guitar player.. a baritone like the bass vi is ideal.
This longer 30” scale is what I’d get though, cause I have a bass and plenty of guitars.
Also, he called this a squire line.
      No.
      Yes, price wise.
But an electromatic and epiphone are in another league - as in better than Squire.
The bass vI and Tele baritone being the standouts as that pawn shop did sound good. And mij squire is nicer than American of today 😆… big overall nothing close to the quality in parts of epiphone and Gretsch.
Let’s just put it this way…
Most squire guys pay 350 for the guitar and swap out like all of it. 🤷🏻‍♂️ making it a 600 or more guitar.
I never think of that with a Gretsch electro or epiphone. Only squires… and I own none. Other that love em ALL say “but… I swapped this this this this …”
Then just buy a Mexican made that are imo better than American these days.
      It’s the new MIJ

  • @PaisleyPatchouli

I have both 27" and 30" scale baritones in my stable and they're very different beasts! Any serious baritoner should look at both scale lengths because they each offer such contrasting possibilities. Fortunately you can still pick up reasonable deals (around $400?) on used Dano baris, which are all 30" scale I think, but the tone of their lipstick pups push them up nicely a bit in the twang dept. That Gretsch sure sounds sweet, and I love the Bigsby (I have one on my bari Tele).
You make a good point mentioning string tension and gauge; the feel and performance of a bari is greatly affected by one's choice of tuning and appropriate string gauge.
My 30" bari is an 8 string that I built on a Bronco bass platform. It's still a 6 course, but the middle two strings have octaves (similar to some Taylor 8 string acoustic baris - you should hear those!). It has an old Dano lipstick at the bridge and a 60s Teisco goldfoil towards the center/neck. Wish I could post a pic...
As you can see, I'm a bit of a bari freak; Squier really needs to get another reasonable and quality baritone offering coming down the pike ASAP.

  • @gringogreen4719
    @gringogreen4719 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ryan. You will want to break out the small flathead screwdriver and play with the screw tops on the pickups. The secret to unlocking more tone out of stock Electromatic pickups is to play with the screw pieces. Not only the pickup height but especially the individual screws. This unchokes the pickup and gets more tonal options. I did this on my Gretschbuckers on my Ibanez Artcore (they were hanging around after I put TV Jones in my 125th Anniversary Electromatic) and it was a total night and day change. You will get more chime and articulation in doing that.
You might also want to try the penny trick on the Bigsby where you swap out the nylon washer for a penny (bonus points if its the same year as the guitar!) Also try stepping on the new spring 30 or so times to wake it up. Hope these help.
I got rid of Gretsch knobs and use Dunlop straplocks. My preferred straplocks.
PS- The pickups are the same footprint as Rickenbacker Toaster Tops or they used to be. My guess is they still are.

Nothing sounds better than a baritone with drippy surf reverb. It's primal. IMHO though, unless you're playing heavy metal, fuzz isn't the best effect to use on a baritone. It destroys the voice in the mix, again,... my opinion. I like hearing the distinct undercurrent of a good rhythm pulsing and driving the sonic landscape. I have a Hagstrom Viking semihollow Baritone in a burst finish. I just love the piano-like chime. Great for dark ambiance. Duane Eddy used it in the early days and a lot of guitarists started to apply baritone to country, surf, spaghetti western soundtracks, and more recently heavy metal. I think it's underutilized in surf music and has more potential for creating a mood under the waves, like a Jules Verne theme track or a new 'Rickover's Dream' (Michael Hedges - RIP)

30" baritones feel huge, can confirm. The old Jazzmaster baritone from Squier that goes for a crazy amount now is a 30" just like the bass VI and feels pretty massive. I waffle back and forth on whether I wanna sell mine for a 27 or 28" bari, especially since I could get a nice one with what I could get for the VM Jazzmaster.
I will say that I tune my JM A to A (which is evidently what they shipped in?) and I like A standard a lot more on the 30" scale than B standard. Either way I am looking forward to Ryan's doom metal album that's all fuzzed out baritone.

I have a Danelectro baritone, and I have tried fender VI stings. It works, as it is also 29-3/4” in scale. The low E is a little flubby, but it works. But overall, these are best tuned to B.

Do you mean the Danelectro baritone is best tuned to “B” all the time, or just when using bass six strings, What can you do with a real baritone grr you can’t do with say a Fender bass six? And vice versa? Do you really Need one of each to avoid compromise? Thanks. Mark in Mass.

@@h.markhorton8188 I find, with this scale length, that tuning to B gets the best of both worlds: you can riff in the guitar and bass realm, but chords still sound pleasing. Those are D’Addario baritone strings I use, personally.
Fender VI strings are just a littler too low. They still work, but I was hoping to get a short scale bass sound, and that wasn’t my experience on the Danelectro. But, you can buy a set and try. I didn’t find the tension to be that different, so I didn’t bother with a set up.

After looking at what was available, and learning that most of those I liked were around the $800 range, I decided to build a Tele bari.Inspired by the Squier, but I got to choose the bridge, pickups, and color.
Combining a used Seafoam CV tele, and a WD music ( Rosewood Tele) neck, - string through, with nice, heavy , brass saddles. For under $450, I'd put it against any high end model going.
Not so long ago, pre Covid, you couldn't find a good baritone neck under 250/300 shipped; this made home conversions more prohibitive. But these days, I see them at $ 150 shipped all the time.
From what I've learned building over a dozen Partscasters, it's all about the quality of the neck, bridges, and pick ups( needn't be expensive, just not cheap garbage), - with tuners that aren't trash.Do the set up right, find a look that appeals to you, - you're all good.
At 28" scale, you can easily get A or G out of it; I've never tuned to E Standard, and am use to heavier strings and lighter tension.

I bought a PRS SE Steve Muchon baritone. It's a really nice sounding and playing instrument, and I paid around $700 for it, which is a lot of money for me. But it's been worth every dime. I didn't want to get on the PRS train, but I did. I, also too, love the Fireballs from Sweetwater.

I'm sure the Squier is a fine instrument (we have a better-than-expected Tele 60's CV), but I thought the Gretsch blew the baritone out of the water. My son saw this and not only bought the Cherry finish Baritone on the spot, but got it from Sweetwater for the first time, so that play worked about as well as the company could have hoped ;-). By the way for anyone interested, a simple call to Sweetwater brought the price on this down to $530, which seemed very reasonable.

I just got one of these earlier this month. So far I love it. It just sounds so powerful. The guitar just vibrates your whole body as you hit those lower notes.
However I noticed a dramatic difference between the volume of the bridge and the neck pickup. I hear the same thing on yours. Normally I’d just raise the neck pickup to get the volume close to the bridge, but those two screws just loosen the pickup, they don’t raise the height.
The only other thing, I wish the tone knob reduced the bass instead of the treble. But that might change if I could raise that neck pickup.

Played this up against a Danelectro Baritone for $200 cheaper, and the Danelectro was a clear winner. The specific guitars I tried were both very similar in build quality (I'd imagine Gretsch is a little more consistent, but I don't know) but the single coils just worked better for the extended range, the Gretsch felt very flat and dull on either pickup. An affordable baritone with a Bigsby is sick though, that's the only thing I really wish the Dano had.

I was stoked with the shape, the slightly wider nut, the Bigsby longest spring you'd use, and etc until it was 30" .
    That's bass guitar territory.
It sounded like a bad bass, no matter the string tension. 27's the magic number. For interest, a subsonic Stratocaster's way better sounding and it can go to even more extremes with pickup selection & combinations.
And, you noticed it sat kind-of uncomfortably even with the bigsby counterweight. A 28 1/2" scale Jaguar baritone is also somewhat out-of-
reach and bass-ey. Go up to an actual 4 string bass and everything - the strings, the tension, the dynamics, are all like they should be imo

  • @stephenmiller1593
    @stephenmiller1593 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I think the volume/tone imbalance between the pickups could be improved by raising/lowering them. Also, I’m hearing a huge string volume difference between the plain & wound strings. For that, angle the pups and adjust the pole pieces.
