LYRICS
Licorice tattoo turned a gun metal blue
Scrawled across the shoulders of a dying town
Took the one eyed jacks across the railroad tracks
And the scar on its belly pulled a stranger passing through
He's a juvenile delinquent never learned how to behave
But the cops would never think to look in Burma-Shave
And the road was like a ribbon and the moon was like a bone
He didn't seem to be like any guy she'd ever known
He kind of looked like Farley Granger with his hair slicked back
She says I'm a sucker for a fella in a cowboy hat
How far are you going?
Said Depends on what you mean
He says I'm only stopping here to get some gasoline
I guess I'm going thataway just as long as it's paved
And I guess you'd say I'm on my way to Burma Shave
And with her knees up on the glove compartment
She took out her barrettes and her hair spilled out like root beer
And she popped her gum and arched her back
Hell Marysville ain't nothing but a wide spot in the road
Some nights my heart pounds like thunder
Don't know why it don't explode
Cause everyone in this stinking town's got one foot in the grave
And I'd rather take my chances out in Burma Shave
Presley's what I go by why don't you change the stations
Count the grain elevators in the rearview mirror
She said mister anywhere you point this thing
It got to beat the hell out of the sting
Of going to bed with every dream that dies here every mornin
And so drill me a hole with a barber pole
And I'm jumping my parole just like a fugitive tonight
Why don't you have another swig and pass that car if you're so brave
I wanna get there before the sun comes up in Burma Shave
And the spider web crack and the mustang screamed
The smoke from the tires and the twisted machine
Just a nickel's worth of dreams and every wishbone that they saved
Lie swindled from them on the way to Burma Shave
And the sun hit the derrick and cast a bat wing shadow
Up against the car door on the shotgun side
And when they pulled her from the wreck
You know she still had on her shades
They say that dreams are growing wild
Just this side
Of Burma Shave

#tomwaits #foreignaffairs - เพลง
I think I'll just hang out with all you cool cats here in the comments section and watch videos of Tom from now on.
Tom Waits is up there with Jacques Brel and Kurt Weill as one of the most gifted songwriters and performers of the last hundred years. His work will be revered after most of the "rock gods" are forgotten.
DYLAN
One of the best of all videos I have ever seen of Mr. Waits. If someone isn’t mesmerized by his unique sense of artistry & oddity, such a person just can’t understand what those of that do, actually see when he performs. He is an American treasure……..and just like some art, he ain’t for everyone. But that is OK………more room in the boat for those of us who dig what he does.
I “discovered Tom Waits when I saw him as an actor in the 1986 black and white Jim Jarmush movie “Down by law”. With the equally brilliant Roberto Benigni and John Lurie he made it perfectly clear that I needed to look into these people…. I’m forever thankful!
@@SteinVarjord at the risk of belaboring things, he knows exactly how odd he is. All of his actions appear totally planned………down to the way he lets his cigarette ash become way long……the way he flexes his fingers to exaggerate the joints……..the way he scratches his head like an addict. All of it works.
I have often wondered at what point in his young life as an artist did he realize who he was, and why he needed to be who he was onstage and in interviews.
I also think of how many people - young & old - that he freed to be themselves, regardless of whether they conformed with what most people think is normal.
Mr. Waits stands for more than most of us can ever realize. It transcends his songs.
Hes one of a kind....fantastic
Yes
Been a fan since the early 90s while living by seaside and doing my hippie art thing. Still a fan. Some of his uniqueness does involve drugs. lol. Some may be part of his show but he did his share...and I did my share while enjoying his music.😁
Apart from all his musical, writing and acing genious I think young Tom Waits is the hottest guy that ever lived.
The man knows how to embody the character of a song.
I like the set design. Lots of artists tour with Marshall stacks, light shows, or pyrotechnics. Only Tom Waits tours with a gasoline pump.
A good old-fashioned heavy duty ‘76’ one to boot.. ⛽️ I don’t know if that company is still barely in business any longer. 🤔 ☺️
Anyway it fits the terroir of Tom and this song so very perfectly!
I feel like all old classic rock fans end up listening to tom waits and then they die (or at least stop listening to rock music)
I think you may be on to something…
The Rock to Tom Waits to Jazz and Experimental pipeline…
Now that's how to smoke a cigarette... those young folks don't know nothin'
Fabulous, I need a drink now.
Got mine now!
Up against the car door on the shotgun side.. cool hornsuch s great performer
Always been in a league of his own
And always will be.
+1
I like all kinds of music, but Tom might be my desert island artist... speechless at this genius artistry!
I have the coolest imaginary father ⋆⋆⋆
His rendition of this on Austin City Limits back in maybe 1978 is the best version Ive seen. Its floating around somewhere online...
Yeah, I have that version saved on my Tommy playlist.Playlist.. this one tops it in my opinion. I've seen this one before.. not even sure where
Mother fucker I've listened to this so many times, and I can't even tell you who's a better American poet than Tom. I love so many, but Tom is a feeling that you are there with. Going into Janice like that, he's a treasure that should be taught in school.
My greatest hope and delusion in life is that he'll tour again someday. There's not a force in the world that could keep me from that show.
The way he moves throughout the entire song, while confessing his love of music via the microphone... Just plain amazing every single time.
Tom i love you
Absolutely phenomenal, and nothing like the studio recording lol
Ain’t this a gem💕💕💕
Tom Waits is an entire art form unto himself.
Seventies Tom Waits.
When i tell friend's and family to listen to Tom Waits and they say "he has a bad singing voice" this ia the video i refer them too. This may be the greatest video of any human being singing. Mesmerizing.
A Mr Waits, don't move in next to me, hell my LAWN may die🎬💪✌️😍🤩🇬🇧💯
London loves you 💪🎬✌️
Classy act, Mr Waits. I was totally mesmerized when I saw him live.
Classy act from a classy cat.
Mixed American Metaphors don't get much better than this. Thank you Tom.
Ain’t no one, ever, like Tom Waits….
Some of Us never got off the Bus
& have been very Happy To share the Ride
see i knew this girl in jurssey ty tw
One of the best ever.
If I were to say run into Tom at a bus station in the middle of nowhere at 4am this is kinda what I imagine our conversation would be like. Tom is the coolest, he's cooler than the other side of the pillow baby.
This saxofone is insane
rad
BEYOND RIGHTEOUS !
such a dancer , a poet and such a good actor!
Very nice, got my Foreign Affairs CD just a few weeks ago and now getting a live recording here

I wish I could buy him a drink and just chat with him . A great. Human being .p
Unmatched sensuality.
Tom Waits is forever my biggest music crush. absolutely no one else quite like this incredible man.
Well said.
The day my momma died I played On The Nickel on repeat. It was the only painkiller that worked.
He is a storyteller, and he tells 'em so well you have to believe them.
I uploaded a video with the full transcript of this live version
Great version, well suited to those Gauloises smoking poetry loving Parisians, but my favourite live performance was the one were he phrased 'Burma-shave' with the doppler like effect of a Buick speeding by on a two lane blacktop.
This man IS a National Treasure
The greatest poet
One of those videos where I upvote before it barely got started
You always were and always will be just the best mate.
An amazing talent , unequalled in every way .
Truly a one of a kind artist.... Cool factor is very high! Transcends time.
Bellellissimo..
When gas was leaded and cigarettes were a dime
Absolutely aWeSoMe❣️
"When the hell are we gonna get to Burma Shave anyway? And my father would say "Be cool". Christ this is priceless .

I like the Rembrandt-esque lighting here
Great theater and music!
Great song, great performance.
Tom is still the king to me!
thank you! was only a few months old then...gives me a TASTE....
He knows how to tell a story, and he does it so incredibly well - I got tearful by this.
Amazing!
Mmmmmmore please.
Beautiful.
Brilliant!!
and my brother would tell me the falling rock signs were about Falling Rock the Indian.. and I believed him..
That horn is magnificent
Mr Waits, you never cease to amaze and please - cheers Sir! Hope you're keeping safe!
Amamos a Tom!!! Gracias por estas joyas💯
I never realized until seeing this how much Michael Richards probably based a lot of the Kramer character on Waits. Like Waits, but hyper and outgoing instead of brooding.
That may well be true , I'm not here to argue . I'm 69 years old , I was introduced to Mr. Waits artistry about 46 years ago . Giving it all the thought I can , I don't know of any previous performers who might have influenced this performance art !!!
Excellent, merci
Always talented! Always sexy! Makes me wanna ride my motorcycle up to Valley Ford, and play some sweet music.
The Man, The Myth, The Legend.
If art is the province of the artist, then Tom Waits epitomizes that.
Genius...Period
Thanks for all the Magic!!!
Tom waits always a part of my life my father use to play this on 8 track and I never looked back waits rules
7 year itch ....... Cheers

Tom should be releasing achive live concerts like this on CD/vinyl (not just streaming for the cheapskates!!)
Α ρε Τομ θεέ!
Μοναδικός
Scouse my naivety, I was born in London, grewup in Hong Kong, ended up in Aust, a helpless Waits addict, but know not what Burma shave means! Anyone please put me out of my misery!
