    Using a tree map as a slicer is such a genius idea, here I was using the vertical slicer and using this boxes which you cannot colour as you like it. Thanks !!!

    THIS IS SO GREAT!
    1. Great idea to use the treemap in such a way ✨
    2. Overcomes the limitations of the slicer when trying to drill through! ✨
    Now we can make a "slicer" selection AND THEN drillthrough!
    AMAZING! THANKS, BAS! ✨🙏🏾✨

    This is really impressive... sir you are a genius! I've never considered using other visuals as a filter in this way. Brilliant!

  • @leahmah4700
    @leahmah4700 2 ปีที่แล้ว +87

    This is brilliant BUT why is everything useful such a workaround in Power BI? Do Microsoft actually use it themselves and realize the shortfalls in it? Maybe Microsoft could implement all your suggestions into a simple set of options!

      Totally agree. The stuff Bas teaches us is great but, as he himself says, it is a lot of effort. I really appreciate his videos, though, as I think he is a great trainer.

      In my opinion MS need to dedicate a few months if releases to just QoL changes, bug/annoyance fixes and achieving basic formatting parity with competing BI tools. Instead they will keep rolling out advanced stuff that sells licences but developers on the ground aren't really fussed about. This is a cool solution but one major problem is it won't sync across pages - only actual slicers or filters will do that.

    • @RichardOliver
      @RichardOliver 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@christopherjohnson3755 Ah, yes, good point about the syncing across pages.

    Cool video, thanks. I've done this before, though not with the explicit purpose of replicating a Slicer, but have a couple of thoughts; the reason I've used visuals as Slicers is because they contain context to suggest what filters you want. So with your Tree Map, if you don't use that Measure to force them all the same size, it's still giving you your slicer options, but also showing you which categories are more important. The main issue I've found is that clicking in the visuals resets all the other visuals in a way that it doesn't reset a slicer, so the slicer settings are more prone to being reset by accident. More of an issue if you have multiple visuals slicing a chart, but getting your users to remember to hold down Control when they make their choices is impossible!

    Hi Bas,
    In the current version of Power BI (April 2023), using the bar chart with tabular editor fix as you have demonstrated in this great video, doesn't work smoothly anymore. Or at least, that is to say, on the report I'm applying it too. in Power BI desktop, before this addition: no issues. Afterwards and when clicking on the bar chart items, I get an error message "Something went wrong - An error occurred while rendering the report" with the option to report this issue.
    It's unfortunate I can't get it to work properly because I really liked the flexibility this offered over the standard boring slicers.

    Nice video. I came up with something else. If you want to have a legend next to this chart with same colors but it SHOULD NOT filter chart next to it but other visuals on your page just make this bar chart without any legend. Make a second one with ONLY legend, place it next to chart one and deselect filtering in interactions. That way you will have a legend that works as a slicer but DOES NOT change chart next to it.
