- In this video I walk you through my approach to dealing with axis labels that do not show fully due to lack of space. With a few tricks it is possible to show labels above each bar. This is super helpful especially when you have long item names or would like to incorporate additional information into the labels.

Hi Bas! Just want to say a deep thank you for all the videos you have been posting. I am trying to watch all of them haha, quite challenging but out of each one, you teach me some very nice visualization tricks for the monthly KPI report I am doing and different powerBI tools I designed for operation (I work in logistics). Your out of box thinking is really amazing and something I cannot find elsewhere. Please keep up the good work like always and bear in mind each video you released benefit so much people out in the world that you can’t possibly imagine❤
Awesome post, I used it today to show TotalOutput, ReprintTotal and percentage for each operator in a perfect way...looked awesome!!
Dude, you are a creative genius at Power BI! That was awesome! Congratulations from Brazil!
Again top tier content. You would make an excellent professor with logical, clear, well thought out explanations. I love that you deliberately spend time explaining anything and everything that can go wrong.
so nice to hear that! thanks a lot
This has been a major pain point for me in Powerbi! My solution was to create a crosswalk of shortened/abbreviated category names to get the whole value to fit in a barchart, but I like this solution much better. Its very clean and easier to maintain (ie, in my solution I'd have to watch for new categories appearing to create a new abbreviation).
Thank you for your videos, you always have such creative workarounds to the limitations in PBI.
I have no idea how you do it. So good with DAX and getting everything done. Mind Blowing!
Excellent idea Bas! Lots of attention to detail. This has been my headache for pas 2-3 years.
Now we do all these and boss say “switch to pie chart!” 😆
I tried this today and it went well, thank you Bas.
your videos come at the right time in my feed tons of thanks bas
Finally the old excel features are showing up. Great video, would have loved to see the interaction with other visuals, whether they mess up or not. Probably not, but I just have urge to test. Thanks Bas.
Fantastic lesson. Thank you!
This is absolutely class, have struggled with the space on these charts for years. thanks
Glad it was helpful! 😊
Your wizardry is next level. Thanks Bas!
EDit: Just to add, i produce dashboards for a client that is present in only a handful of sub-categories at most so this method looks clean, concise and adheres to UI/UX principles perfectly. Amazing work.
Thanks for watching
Amazing video. Thanks for sharing this.
It was exactly what I was looking for thank you very much
Thanks for your help, you video are very concrete to learning
This is another level! thanks mate
Gracias, excelente trabajo como siempre.
Top notch content as usual. Thank you 😊
This is a great video. Absolutely wild that this isn't out of the box functionality and requires so many additional hoop-jumps to execute.
Agreed… hopefully soon
Absolutely top notch stuff Bas. Love sll your vids and way you explain all the corner cases. ❤❤
Glad you like it!
Wow! Amazing video
Thank you
As always a great insight, thanks
Excellent work and you are one of the best in dashboard designing and UI. Great work Bas

Bas once again amazing work / tip / trick / magic!!. Thanks a lot this was a this was a headache.
Everyday I learn something new on this channel
Another great video, Thanks a lot, Bas.
Always learning from You.
I appreciate that! thanks for watching Jose
Great technique, thanks for sharing all this knowledge
Glad it was helpful!
It looks surprisingly clean! Neat for when you've got few categories or want to fill extra vertical space
yea exactly as long as you don't have super many items it is worth considering this alternative - thanks for watching again! :D
Simply Awesome, dont find better words to explain
Thank you so much 😀
love this idea! i also use Data bars in matrix visuals to also reach the same point.
If you dont need drillthrough or custom tooltips, the horizontal barchart custom visual is easier for this approach. You can switch from hammer head, lollipop, line... But nice content, very usefull :)
As usual, great content for us from the finest person... keep rocking 😎
😊😎👊 thank you Kumar !!!!
great content as always. Thanks :)
Another great solution to replace the out of the box bar chart with a way better-looking bar chart. Great video, Bas!!
Thanks! 👍
Amazing ! You are giving a new vision your dedication toward Community Unremarkable .Your content take me to next level in power Advance Journey.
However One concern I have checked in power bi service level Custom label not displaying the Labels for this scenario if you have any workaround pls do let me know.
Excellent technique 👌......Thanks for sharing amazing content.
Thank you! Cheers! :D
Amo a este hombre, gracias.
This is super cool Bas.. You are awesome. Thank you...
Glad you like it! thx for watching!!! :D
Excellent presentation. Very clear and easy to understand and follow. My challenge is how can you make the labels dynamic. For example if there was more than 1 field in the bar chart and you used the drill down filter how could you get the the labels to also change.
Not even watched and already I like it. Great work. Gonna watch now :)
Lol 😊 hope u still like it after watching
I literally just thought about this a few hours ago. Thank you!
i'm reading your mind ... or your mine ! :D
Thank you bas, informative video ❤
happy to hear that you got some value from it 😊 thanks for watching
Thank you Bass ! An amazing video again ^^
😎👊😊 thank you for watching it !!!
You are great! Very smart solution!
Thanks Alex! 🙏
Bass! People are going to remember you for millions of years to come pal.
Please make some Udemy courses too.
Folks can benefit a lot from your courses.
thanks a lot! I tried udemy, but was not able to get a lot of exposure on the platform. You can therefore find my courses on datatraining.io/powerbi-training
@@HowtoPowerBI I use a lot of Maven course on Udemy in conjunction with your work here. Such a shame you didn't get traction. I'll absolutely pick up a few of your courses. Muchos gracias for everything you do.
@@HowtoPowerBI you are charging $2750 for a course , it's not affordable if we compare with udemy price it's too huge
@@sandipjabade1 the power bi essentials learning path is 30 usd, maybe that is more interesting to you. The design transformation is not comparable to any udemy course.
Brilliant solution for the Labelling. ❤ Thanks for your Awesome solutions in Power BI
thank you for watchn!!! :D
Boss, Can you make a video on dynamic colum headers in Matrix visual when we are using the Measures as Values in Matrix.
Another great video, thanks Bas for all the great work u do
:D thank you!!! very happy to hear that :D
Fantastic stuff Bas, used this today in a project. I tweaked your measure a bit so It worked with a field parameter. Great stuff
Very educative!
Great tutorial and awesome usage of measures and nuances of Power BI. On the other hand it is crazy that UI change that should be 2 clicks away, natively in Power BI, requires 15 minutes tutorial to implement.
Totally agree
Great job. Thanks for share.
Thanks for watching! 😊
Awesome!
Thank you Bas, no more need on using custom visualizations :)
Awesome :)
Simply, thank you!
😊
Thanks!
This is cool!
However, you can simply add a Category name to the X-axis beside Sales (X-axis will contain both) and keep the Category name in Y-axis then enable Custom label = Category name, and finally enable total label, and with some tweaking it will work
Love you man amazing. Thank you so much. Gold.
😎👊
Great Video! tks!
Glad you liked it! thx!
Are you a wizard? Great idea and so easy to do, thanks!
Simply genius ❤️
:)
Thanks a lot, I was looking for it & it is appeared 😌. Though it seems hard for me but still thanks a lot❤
You can do it!
this is amazing ...
Thanks :)
Very interesting and useful keep it up Bas
Thanks! Glad you think so!
perfect! almost.. looks a little bit different in case of negatives
a brilliant trick 👍🏻
thank you!!!

You are Awesome 👏🏻
😊 thanks for watchn
Love to watch your videos ❤❤
thank you for watching them :D
Yes you can .. use the fx button for the label colors :)
Excellent👌👍
Very helpful, great video. Is it possible to do something similar with a clustered bar chart ?
Congrats Bas! Excellent work. How can we use it with hierarchy on one of the axis (store manager, district manager, country manager)? thank you
This is just amazing as usual from you!! How do you really think and come up with this??? Just awesome, looking forward to hear from you.
:):) thanks a lot, looking at ways to improve the reports and just clicking around (a looot of it)
Thanks Bas! Awesome 😎
😎😊😎👊
oops! this is out of the world, thank you for sharing BAS

Excellent ....!!!
😊
Useful 👍
You are an absolute genius
i wish :D
Simply brilliant! Love from Bharat ❤
thank you!!! :D .. love back from Düsseldorf ;)
Great video. It’s a real shame that Microsoft isn’t investing time and money into improving visuals. This is a very basic feature imo that should come out of the box. If you look at some of the out of the box features that come with datadog (I understand that’s a monitoring tool but it’s still a data visualisation tool) it really highlights how behind Microsoft are in visualisation. I love power bi but it takes too long to create something visually appealing when it doesn’t really need to.
Hi Bas, first of all very nice video. Quick suggestion from your end. If I have a hierarchical bar chart with different data once I drill down how can I make it works? What I have in mind is defining a measure which first check the data and then define the selectedvalue() to be displayed on top to the bar. Something like: If data(1) then selectedvaue(x) else if data(2) then selectedvalue(y) etc. Do you have a way forward. Thanks a lot
Great video Bas! This makes the chart neat. Unfortunately, I got lost @5:55. I can't see these padding and width that you adjusted. I am only seeing 'Space between categories' which is not enough to make the labels look ok 😔
Amazing
😎😊😁
Mastery of a master in dataviz
😊
Great video! Does this also work for stacked charts? Or any solution for those?
This guy seems to amaze me every time
🙏 thanks for the nice comment :)
Hey Bass, any way of getting those labels left aligned?
Hello, love your contents so much as it is really helping me !, in this video though I noticed you have more control over the formatting the bars which I don't have in my power BI desktop even though it is the latest version of Power BI, for instance I also need to play around with the "Inner padding" option under Bars under "Spacing" in the formatting menu but I don't have that one I have just the ability to change the spacing between the bars , do you may be know what might be the reason for that ?
The idea is great. I would like to do the same but using a Stacked Chart. Is this feasible?
Another amazing work. However, the labels do not work properly if I want to see Year To Date bar chart and filter by different month. Can you look into this problem? or there is no way we can do with that?
This was a great tip, I wonder why you didn't put the label inside the bar, I have recently done in one of my Dashboard ?
Amazing! How can I make this work using parameters in my bar chart?
Fantabulous
thank you!!! 😊
