    In my day we used the bow in the collars time it right and they come back so easly I worked derrick for 12 years and like most old hands have said you had to be faster way faster driller never stopped the blocks. One rope to hold it another from the back not the side and would come back way easier ( try running the pull rope from the back of the board cheers also helps if you pull collar over while its being set down) My days were the 1970 to 1995 cheers

      Jack that collar I'm from the center, so it pulled the bails in, then have your snubbing post rope on ready to jack... when that collar hit the table, you'd unlatch and the bails would fall away, then you jacked it back against the diving board as the blocks went by, then gave it a bit of slack and started jacking toward the snubbing post then we swung them out and racked them on the inside of the Derrick, usually 3 stands of 9" and 3 stands of 6", we'd have to climb up and stand on our snubbing and jacking ropes to reach the tail ropes to unlatch and latch the elevators because of how tall the collars were, and usually had to drop our lanyard before we climbed because our lanyards weren't long enough...

      @davidlangley2722 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you’re correct, I would have ropes that would be parallel to the board and ropes that would come from the side, that way I had 2 different directions to lead the collar back to the elevators and you’re also correct on pulling the collar back before it’s set down all the way. There’s so many things he could do different to make it much easier. I’m old school myself started in 74.

      Right on, maybe for wraps if you had a wet DST with live oil on it. Worked collars with a real loose safety belt with one rope on the harness, not all of the extra ropes and cable. Was tripping out of the hole Northeast of Snyder Texas and had 6500 feet stacked back in the Derrick and saw a tornado. I got in my Derrick climber and did a freefall to the floor. It missed us by less than a mile.

    all of us guys from the 70's know this is slow , 1 rope its all on the first press and pull the collars will do the work for you , if the derrick is leaning the wrong way than you have to fight it .

    Different safety practices with the 2 ropes? All I remember was a single with a half wrap...you get one hell of a handshake as a bonus!

      TheMoezilla bells are hard to get moving on a TD cuz of the cylinders, so I tie a rope to hold the collar and let the Driller kick the elevators back out of the way. I can get it swinging a lot easier that way

      Depends how big your derrick is. Worked derricks on 110 nationals, pretty good size derrick. I always used a double wrap pop it back for 6 inch. I never worked with 4inch collars. 8 and 10 inch we used a mule. I see horrendous derrick work on these videos these days. roughnecking in general. I worked on drilling rigs, land and offshore for 10 years. 77-87. Been in a LOT of derricks. From N75-80 nats all the way up to 1625 national. 4 1/2 and 5" mostly. Some 3 1/2 on rare occassion. It all works/handles differently. Worst I ever worked was an OIME that the board was set sooo far back. It just made everything harder. And of course, the best height for a stand is level with the top of your head. Had a job once that they had this problem. A derrickman got hurt one night on another shift when the shuttlecock came down on top of a stand bowed it and it jumped out and hit him in the face. I told 'em to shove it and moved on. Not worth the hassle or the risk. Fuck I hated shit drilling contractors, drillers and tool pushers and did not ever hesitate to tell them to shove it where the sun don't shine. But it's amazing,, some people can make simple jobs hard and others can make hard jobs easy. A good rig, a good TP and driller...good crew...just made life sooo much easier. Bad ones, could make life a living helll and it's best to just get the fuck out there. They hurt/mangle/kill too many people. Call it a day and move on. Just to add I think my best record for round tripping, which we did one day on an 8 hour tour, was 14,700'. 9 6" drill collars, 4 1/2 drill pipe. Drove up on location morning tour had pulled one row. We had it turning to the right just as the evening tour pulled up on location. That's a solid days work. Nat 110 with 2 800hp cats. Lee C Moore 1000 ton derrick.

    I just went back some Forty forty-five years. For those who don't know much about drilling it may seem like "Oh! What's there?", but believe me it is team work and each one right from those on the floor, the one on the brakes to this guy who is fully harnessed it is like Beethoven's symphony.
    However I think although you are on top you still need to have your helmet on. Maybe one small nut from the Derrick top gets loose and falls on your head, all those safety harness won't prevent you from being loaded on the stretcher.
    Thanks for sharing.

    When you’re pulling pipe on a big rig you need to run The pull back rope through the third or fourth finger from the front. This way the pipe pivots back to you and it won’t get away from you so you can pull it back in the alley. I used to tie my pull back rope Back where my Derrick belt was tied 14 fingers and 18 rolws on one side 5 inch. Start out with my belt tied almost in the corner and move it as a Derrick Filled up. Use a clove hitch on your pull back rope so you can keep letting it out

      Worst thing I encountered pulling 8” was when the worm set the stand on the rotary table . Neither I or drill was watching downstairs. I unlatched and was setting it back when I heard “latch it up, worm f.cked up. The stand was like 15 foot above the board . Collar nubbings had 4 foot of play. I wasn’t on the board but I watched a driller still have enough weight to twist out of a collar nubbing. Collar clamps are there for a reason.

You did more work and got paid less, u couldn't make it in the oilfield today.....I made it in your oilfield and I'm still making it in the new one. Stop hating when you've never had to latch pipe in a derreck built for a topdrive(not converted), don't even have to touch elevators on a Kelly rig.

    only advise I would give to this after reading all the bs comments from keyboard warriors is that it's a lot easier to wrap collar rope under instead of over that way when your going in the hole the rope will unspiral and fall off the collar by itself instead of you having to do the work. I won't bash your work because the point is you got the collar back the way you like it. to each their own. 💯

    Week as hell with the extra rope. Sorry, just jack it back with a wrap and a half. H&P flex 3 rig 218 in Barnette shale. And 274 in eagle ford shale. Haven’t been in the patch for a long time now but when I was working derricks, a wrap and a half on 8” DC with a pull rope worked just fine.

    Rather slow, if you are racking DC's manually, Driller sets pin on the table, it fall to the Derrickman, he ties it off securely, Driller picks up carefully, it will swing fast, crew set it down on the collar mat. watch your fingers
