    The reason for the nightly Voltage increase is likely caused by a reduced load on the power stations and bad grid management..

      bad grid is my take, from Quebec.... we have so much power we undersell it while overcharging regular people. Our "grid" is stable.... most of the time, depending where you live

      What if higher voltage causes electronics that are on to consume more electricity at night? Current remains almost the same while voltage rises. For example 300 watts TV consumes 230 volts at 1.3 amps/current during day time, the same TV at night consumes 338 watts with 260 volts at 1.3 amps/current.

    • @somanyfnbananas2774
      @somanyfnbananas2774 5 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Most modern electronics use switch mode power supplies (like the LED corn bulb and the phone charger in the video). Even if you increase the voltage the power stays about the same as it needs less current. If the voltage goes way too high they might fail, yes, but even the mentioned 260V won't do that.

      It would still be less than 10 volts increase at night, not 30 volts or more. Its probably power companies who increase voltage at night doing it to charge more money in electric bill.

    • @mysock351C
      @mysock351C 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but normally there will be a tap changing system to buck the voltage as the load lightens on the transformer. The opposite happens as the load increases, it begins to boost the voltage to compensate for losses. If the tap changer fails, then there is no more regulation.

  • @jacobrawles8687
    @jacobrawles8687 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The raise in voltage over night is most likely from less load on the power grid threw the night, not the power company turning up the voltage.

    The filament in the incandescent was probably being damaged faster than normal under the high voltage, but the LEF probably uses a step down transformer before the voltage is converted to DC, this means no matter the AC voltage as long as it doesn’t physically damage the coils the light will work normally, which is why 419 volts destroyed it.

    Reduced load on the utility transformer perhaps. I don't see it as much at my current residence, but at the old house from a neighbourhood built in the early 60s in Florida, during the afternoon in the Summer the voltage would be in the range of 117V, but in the very early mornings it could go as high as 126V on a nominal 120V system. Using a Tripp-Lite UPS that will display voltage whenever it is plugged in.

    Rhey dont rise the voltage. The voltage rises and falls depending on load. Plus there is almost no grid management so when in the night the load is very small voltage rises. And when the load is high the voltage falls(to about 200volts).

  • @tuxrandom
    @tuxrandom 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    260 Volts shouldn't be a problem at all because most 220V devices are designed with the British 240V grid in mind, which has a voltage tolerance range of +/-10% of the nominal voltage, i. e. a maximum input voltage of 264V. And most power supplies use 400V electrolytic capacitors which should be safe at least up to ~280V AC input voltage.

      andygozzo72 385V should still be on the safe side with 385/sqrt(2) giving about 272 Volts AC. But maybe the insulation has broken down some due to age.

    I think you need 2000 volts out of an microwave transformer to destroy the blender motor

    • @soundspark

      Blender motor demands several amps of current at normal voltage; would it just blow up the transformer?

    Why I have surge protectors in my house. They use metal oxide varistors and gas discharge tubes to short voltage spikes and surges to ground and trip the breakers.
    Those offer limited protection against small surges like from a distant lightning strike.
    If you have problems with constant overvoltages like 300V instead of the normal 220/230 you need to get an overvoltage relay that will disconnect the power.

    A transformers voltage is dependant on the amount of load applied. Less load current the higher the terminal voltage, more load current pulls the voltage down. Utility transformers have an Automatic 'Tap Changer' fitted to regulate the voltage depending on load applied.
    It would appear the supply company haven't repaired the one that supplies your house.
    There will be less load on the transformer at night when people are in bed than during the evening when more appliances are being used.

    No one increases voltage at night 😂 ita due to low load at the grid where line capacitance dominates and gives a increased voltage exactly what happends at a leading pf. You will observe this effect in underground wiring system used for supplying power.

    This is why circuit breakers are a thing. Its easier to replace blown-out fuses in case of a power spike, than all of your house's electronics.

    • @pootispiker2866
      @pootispiker2866 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is not what circuit bekers or fuses were ever meant to protect. The breakers are there to protect the building's wiring and only the building's wiring.
