I’m here 4 years late, but Audley is such an inspiration. The chops and the tone just blow my mind. I hope you read this Audley. Buddy, you are inspiring a lot of guitarists.
Those 2 COL records are amazing. Been hoping Audley would do a project of his own ever since. Thanks so much for this interview. I hope he knows that Cry of Love was a very important band to a lot of people.
Very well said, I just came across this interview three years later. I have loved Cry of Love since the early 90's and still have them on heavy rotation today. I never did get to see them live. One of my biggest regrets.
I discovered Cry of Love in 2024. How did I never hear them? Audley Freed is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard!! Can't get enough of their 2 awesome albums. Why didn't "Sunday Morning Flood" do better? It shows how really awesome he is!!
I’m from Muscle Shoals Alabama and joined the Marine Corps back in the early 90s. While stationed in Okinawa, I was looking for some new music at the PX when I stumbled across Cry Of Love “Brother” CD. It looked cool and had the Hendrix connection so I took a chance and was totally blown away by the awesome songs on it. And then, even better, I was reading through the liner notes and found out that it had been recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound! Here I was on the other side of the world and had just bought a taste of home! I’ve been a fan of Audley ever since 👍🏻
Same here. Did 2 Mediterranean 6 month cruises during the Gulf War in 93 and 94. Cry of Love and Jon Butcher’s Barefoot Servants, and Sass Jordan’s Racine record got me through those rough times being away from home. Those records have never been out of rotation for me. Audley is in my top 5 players of all time.
At the 17:00 mark he states that Kelly's voice "really galvanized things for us". I can attest to the truth of that statement. In the fall of '81 I was playing in a band in Franklin NC. We had a singer and he was OK, but not great. One day our drummer failed to show up at practice and we happened to have a few observers hanging about and one of them piped up and said "Why don't you let my friend here play the drums? He's really good." So we did. "really good" was an understatement. He was light years better than our regular drummer and he had a double bass Ludwig setup that he could use to boot. "Oh yeah, he can sing to!" they said, so we set up a mic for him. And that's when we had our galvanizing moment. He was superb, and his name was Kelly Holland.
Cry Of Love/King's X, in a little long island strip of stores... one of the best shows ever. was a humbucker/hard rock/VH guy, and no one made me want a single coil strat until I saw this show. Audley, changed my life that night
The fact it took me OVER 3 YEARS to listen to this amazing interview with the great Audley Freed, goes to show just how incredibly busy my life ( both personal/family and working ) has become. I'm almost ashamed, how did I miss this for all of this time? Oh well, better late than never. I can clearly remember when I first heard Peace Pipe on the radio, and several other songs by COL. At the time, I was gigging hard in a local cover band I had co-founded, and I proclaimed to anyone who would listen that this "new band" Cry of Love was THE band of that time. I absolutely loved them, and especially Audley's killer guitar work. We immediately began performing Peace Pipe and Bad Thing in the local clubs in my area. The people really appreciated it too.
Your solo in Saving Grace is my #1 solo of all time. Melodic and bluesy. Perfect! Thanks for the music. And yes it mattered to me and still does to me til now.
"Fire in the Tall Grass was my fave Cry of Love tune. It took an amazing guitarist like Audley to replace Mark in TBC...Two of the most under rated guitarists - Audley Freed and Alex Lifeson. Thanx.
What a Great Player Audley is and a guy who’s in it for the Music and that’s all that matters,(As we know)and that’s why he’s so respected among his peers and a Top Fella to go with it , God Bless him and his family 🌞❤️⭐️🙏 .. Really Enjoyed this Interview and Learned about some other music that might have passed me by . Thank you Both for that 👍🏻🌞❤️⭐️
I’ll say this. I’m 22 in college and a lot of these stories and awesome players like mr freed makes you wanna continue the dream and keep the real rock alive. Mr audley I’ve sent 3 of my friends those 2 albums in the past month or two and we are still rocking to it. I’ve seen your live stuff and wish I could use a jubilee or xtc live. Bars are a little different with rock n roll now days. But hell yeah thanks for the inspiration
He's definitely one of my Top 5 favorite guitar players. 'Brother' is definitely in my Top 10 favorite albums. Love his playing on 'Diamonds and Debris' too. Great down-to-earth guy. Thanks !!
Audley Freed is for me, the poster on the wall guy . The melodies , the licks , the song writing .. Love his stuff.. Been a fan since Brother. That cd has never left my play list.. Been playing guitar for 40 years and I been playing his licks all my life .. Killer stuff... Last week ,just about bought his Senn Pamona blond telecaster he had.. Covid 19 put a stop to that .... ba .. any way... be safe .. Love your music Audley...And thank you for sharing your life stories..
A long way from Harry’s Guitar shop in Raleigh where Audley gave lessons… He was not only a great teacher but an all around great guy. I was blessed to be a very young player in that magic time in the 90’s when John Custer came back to Raleigh and made everything seem possible. There were so so many great bands here during that time that time, too many to list here, that ran the gambit of styles from the classic southern rock of COL to the ridiculous funk of Dag to the heavy evolution of COC or the industrial metal of Jam Pain Society. You can still hear the influence of that time period in music today… but none of the players of that time period has made Raleigh more proud than Audley…
i cant beleive this only got 800 views! audley freed is a guitar genius, ive been a fan since black crowes times and he is my favourite guitar on the planet! Mr Fredd, i salute you! Cheers from BRasil!
I've had the pleasure of seeing Audley play with the Crowes, ATCF, NEM, and Gov't Mule, and he's an amazing player. The CoL records are amazing. It's so cool to finally get some insight into his life in music. Great stuff. I saw him play with Jimmy and the Crowes, but also at the Vegas shows on that tour when Jimmy didn't play, and he handled those Zeppelin songs better than Page.
Saw them live in Boston with Kelly which was killer, and the album with Robert singing, Diamonds & Debris, is criminally underrated. Smoking guitarist of our generation....
When I saw his first run of shows with the Crowes Chris would say “Freeed your mind and your ass WILL follow❤️ Much love you’re a stone killer on guitar and a wonderfully righteous sounding Duude
Wow, great interview Craig. I think this might be my favorite one that you've done, man. In addition to being such a tasteful player, he seems like such a genuinely kind person with a great head on his shoulders. I also love how he's not afraid to be a"normal" person, and have other interests besides just playing around the clock. He seems secure enough with who he is as a person to realize that being a well-rounded person and having a balanced life actually enriches you as a human being and doesn't mean that you don't have a good work ethic. In fact taking a much-needed break at times can actually energize you and make you a better player than you were before! 👍 That's something that I myself have had to learn the past few years as well. Great job as usual man!
Audley is one guy I REALLY like and his playing is stellar that is one guy I would really like to hang out with for a day to see what I could learn. CRIMINALLY UNDER RATED!
My band started out near Raleigh NC just as COL was disbanding. We played Highway Jones. Dry grass. Revelation. Gotta love me. At every sound check we played one of those songs and started the countdown to see how long before the sound guy would tell us that he was COL’s sound guy😂😂. They must have had 50 sound guys 😂😂
I’ll never forget watching KWS open for the Crows/Page show in Detroit and was blown away, but when I seen Audley was playing with the Crows I lost my shit! I’ll never forget that show
This was a great interview. Audley has had a very interesting career and life. He is such a great guy. I'm glad to be from and live in Eastern NC also. I live not too far from one of his Cry Of Love band mates, Jason Patterson.
Love the story about One More From the Road. That was a huge album back in the day and Skynyrd was a huge influence on a lot of budding musicians. I'd never heard of Audley until I saw One More for the Fans. My first thought was, "who is this guy!? He's nailing these guitar parts!"
I spoke to Audley at a number of gov't mule shows between 98 and 04. What a sweet, humble man and an absolute monster guitar player. What a resume this man has.
Had never heard of Audley until I saw the Lynrd Skynrd tribute at the Fox in Atlanta. Was completely in awe of this guy who was nailing it lick for lick. Fast forward these years later and I now live in Nashville. Just hope I end up crossing paths at some point so I can thank him for his music.
Audley and his wife live in Nashville and they play (before COVID anyway) small local venues occasionally. They'll put a band together and have a tribute night playing nothing but Neil Young or Warren Zevon "B-Sides" for instance. Keep an eye open and they shouldn't be too hard to find as things open back up.
Wow, Audley Freed is such a great, and powerful guitar player that has ever hit the stage. In '93, '94 when I first heard COL I was just so excited about what I was hearing, just floored me. Such chemistry between those guys, the loss of Kelly was the end of the band imo, and thats not taking anything away from the other guys, cause to me all of them were "the cream of the crop" but Kelly was such a great singer, and it would be like Bad Co and no Paul Rogers...aint happening. Cry of love, Storyville, and Arc Angels, we're all so damn lucky to have experienced these Super bands and their explosive music in our life time, thank you Audley😎🎸
The kinda guy you're happy to see him do well--modest, kind, and intelligent in addition to being a wicked talent. I'm not from that area but a buddy was a drummer in Raleigh back in the 80s and there was some great talent there--PKM (Pee Wee Kenny and Mike) and Dag. They all should've got more than they did. It's awesome to see Audley playing with Peter Stroud, who seems like the other nicest guy in the world who's just outrageously good.
Great interview. I heard Piece Pipe on German radio and was blown away. Took a moment to find out what the band was. Couldn't get the CD. Told my drummer, who was going to a CD / vinyl fair, to look for this album. He got it. But. He called me and said, 'I keep it'. And I said 'What??' And he said 'That is such a cool album, no way I am letting go of it, sorry.' Anyway, got hold of it later on, still love it, and Piece Pipe is one of my alltime fave songs. All time. And I got thousands of CDs to chose from. Gee, I think I'll listen to it again right now. Cheers!
Thanks Audley, from one North Carolinian to another, one NC guitar player to another, who moved to Nashville in 1993, had to move back to NC in 1998, for the death of a Father, cried when I had to leave Nashville, and can't return because the price of an apartment, much less a house, is way above middle class income.
I'm new here. You've got some of the best guests and interviews on earth here. I had a Cry Of Love sticker on the back of my '83 Explorer at the neck joint. It blended perfectly with the natural finish. I lost that guitar in the pawn shop to pay rent! I really f$#@ED up. Haha.
Loved this guy's playing on everything from CoL after hearing them on UK radio in 1993 through Crowes to Sheryl Crow stuff, amazing player with great feel for the songs.
Audley has always been humble, private, good friend and a perfect gentleman. I’ve grown up in politics and music world. Bad things could have happened to me, but my Mother, a lot of musicians and people in the business kept me safe. Uncle Gregg especially ♥️ Miss him, too…
55 mins in he mentions my friend Kenny Soule a great drummer I've worked with and that's how I met Audley. Kennt was in a band called Dag from North Carolina.
COL might be in my top 10 bands of all time. And Diamonds is in my top 10 “albums” of all time. Great interview. May be the best band nobody knows about.
That band at the beginning,,, he and Robert quit,,,,, Sidewinder! Saw them many times. I met Audley in Williamsburg VA (w Sheryl Crow) and he told me,,,,,, "we will always have the Magic Attic in Myrtle Beach". Audley is the coolest nicest dude you could imagine.
Thank you so much for this wonderful interview, Audley Freed is, by far, my most important modern guitar influence since the early '90 (Cry Of Love). I costantly try to find material about him (I'm a professional guitar player from North Italy) and few days ago i discover this. Thank you so much again for your precious and incredible work at EveryoneLovesGuitar and sorry for my poor poor english. Alberto
@@EveryoneLovesGuitar no, thanks for interviewing Audley and getting his story. I feel like Diamonds and Debris is such a musical achievement. It takes a special kind of talent to write and play music of that sophistication that still is as rock n roll as it is. It is so elegant and badass at the same time. Audleys playing is so tonefull and soulfull. How I would love to see a reunion of that lineup.
Dude! Did you know my great guitarist Brother in Law Doug Phelps from Ahoskie? He was a great Deer hunter cook. That dude could listen to a song and after the third refinement NAIL the tune.
I have been listening to Cry of Love since the beginning and their 2 cds never leave my car. They are absolute classics . I got to see them in LA at a small club. What an amazing show. Audley and Kelly were fantastic. Great memories 👌. Too bad the Crowes and Chris Robinson didn't let him contribute more. He would have made them better.
I was so excited to hear he had joined the Black Crowes but when I heard them I couldn't hear Audley. Thought it was a criminal waste of an amazing players talent.
Funny how the studio version of No Quarter was down a half step due to Page slowing the tape for the final mix.......because most of the rest of that Album ( Houses of the Holy ), Page actually sped the tape UP a half or whole step so that Plant's vocals were heard at a higher pitch in the finished album. Because by that time, Plant had literally destroyed his vocal chords from all of the past heavy touring in support of the first 3 or 4 albums. I saw a documentary about it. When ya carefully analyze just how powerful Plant's voice was during the early years of Zeppelin, and then take into account all of the insane touring schedules across the world ( particularly here in the U.S. ), it's a miracle he had any voice left at all, for the rest of his career. Matter of fact, way back then, Plant was in dire need of surgery to his vocal chords, yet he kept putting it off due to the heavy touring schedules.
Back in the day when Brother was released, grunge (🤮) was in full swing and the sheeple were swallowing what the record companies were cramming down their throats. Not me though. I played in bands in the mid and late 80’s and early 90’s that focused on hard rock being such an Eddie Van Halen fan. My genesis in guitar actually was classic rock and more importantly, the southern rock and blues rock classics like ZZ Top, Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, the Outlaws, Blackfoot etc. But when I heard Peace Pipe on the radio with those killer vocals, classic sounding yet ripping guitar riffs and tone, solid, in the pocket drumming and that kicking, grooving bass, I was in Heaven. I was brought back to my beginnings! I bought the CD and as a guitar player myself, dove right in to Audley’s tasty riffs, ripping tone and songwriting. Been a huge fan ever since and he has inspired me to always learn and push my own boundaries on what I could do on my guitar.
I’m here 4 years late, but Audley is such an inspiration. The chops and the tone just blow my mind. I hope you read this Audley. Buddy, you are inspiring a lot of guitarists.

saw COL open for Paul Rodgers in 93 in Cleveland. They blew me away. Big fan since
At the 17:00 mark he states that Kelly's voice "really galvanized things for us". I can attest to the truth of that statement. In the fall of '81 I was playing in a band in Franklin NC. saw 'Cry of love' 20 yrs. ago. excellent!
Thanks Audley,
from one North Carolinian to another, one NC guitar player to another, who moved to Nashville in 1993, had to move back to NC in 1998, for the death of a Father, cried when I had to leave Nashville, and can't return because the price of an apartment, much less a house, is way above middle class income.
where do the waitresses and janitors live?
I’ve discovered many awesome guitarist through your podcast. You get the most interesting , under the radar guitarist . Love Audrey.
Cool, thanks Scott!
Met him a couple times, mutual friends, worked with RK for a couple years around 04ish. Awesome guy, great interview......
Thanks fordaez, Rock on! 🎸🙌🏻🔥🎶
The Lead he did on Peace Pipe was one of the few I wanted to learn note for note....what a cool lead!
Yeah. Discovered him when I bought a record CRY OF LOVE. And of course his tenure in BLACK CROWES was cool
Brother is a bad ass album. In my top ten to this day.
Cry of love Brother album is the best 90´s album!
Haha.
Thanks Brubaker's Flatcakes, glad you're enjoying the show... and we've all been there :-) Rock on! 🎸🙌🏻🔥🎶
Loved this guy's playing on everything from CoL after hearing them on UK radio in 1993 through Crowes to Sheryl Crow stuff, amazing player with great feel for the songs.
One of the nicest guys if I’ve ever known! My buddy.
I agree! Thanks for listening :-)
Audley has always been humble, private, good friend and a perfect gentleman. I’ve grown up in politics and music world. Bad things could have happened to me, but my Mother, a lot of musicians and people in the business kept me safe. Uncle Gregg especially ♥️ Miss him, too…
I've played the Wash Pub in Nashville in front of 12 people as well. Good times.
Saw Cry of Love so many times. A great rock and roll band. Period.
one of my fav guitarists!
Me too Andy Southern Rose Music - thanks for listening! subscribe: elg.fun/subscribe
@@EveryoneLovesGuitar he's a great guy too!
cool interview. Audley Freed seems like such a cool dude. Cry of Love should have been monster huge. Still listen to both CDs all the time. Awesome.
Couldn't agree more!
55 mins in he mentions my friend Kenny Soule a great drummer I've worked with and that's how I met Audley. Kennt was in a band called Dag from North Carolina.
He was also in a band called PKM! He was the K (for Kenny) in the name
That regional cover band they didn't put a name to was Sidewinder! I saw and met Audley during that period in Raleigh NC.
Great show! Love Audley
THAT STRAT HE PLAYED ON PEACE PIPE CRY OF lOVE AND HIS TONE LIVE WAS INCREDIBLE
Hopefully John Custer's presentation was a part of that tone .
Absolutely
COL might be in my top 10 bands of all time. And Diamonds is in my top 10 “albums” of all time. Great interview. May be the best band nobody knows about.
Yes, I agree John Braun - thanks for listening! subscribe: elg.fun/subscribe
The Cry Of Love record Brother, one of the top rock records of the 90's, full stop.
Yes, I agree teecuz bruh - thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
so so so cool
What a wonderful interview!!!!!! Awesome......
Thank you for listening Glen Guldbeck Music! 🎉🔥😇 subscribe: elg.fun/subscribe
He's just as nice as he is talented...love this man!
yes he is...
Alberto
Glad you enjoyed it! Your English and the spirit of what you want to say is perfect my friend! Thank you for listening Alberto Biroli! 🎉🔥😇
Great conversation - Respect.
Thanks jamesianp, Rock on! 🎸🙌🏻🔥🎶 subscribe: elg.fun/subscribe
One of my favorite guitar players ever and a HUGE influence on my playing! Great interview!
Thanks Tom, yeah he's awesome
Diamonds And Debris is up there with any of the classic rock albums of all time. Its a crime that it wasn't promoted properly.
Yes, I agree jupiter moongauge - thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
Yes, I agree stratmagic - thanks for listening 💥 🎶 🎸 !
I was so excited to hear he had joined the Black Crowes but when I heard them I couldn't hear Audley. Thought it was a criminal waste of an amazing players talent.
Y'all both are full of it. Killer guys!!
Thank you for listening joseph sullivan! 🎉🔥😇
Yes sir them guys rule over all
Beautiful Dude! Tonemeister for sure! Bad to the Bone!
Audley is.......THE MAN
Would love to hear Audrey in person. He is a killer guitar.
Wow! Had to jump out and go listen to No Quarter with Grohl and Haynes. Great cover and I really loved Audley’s “air Theramin” on the breakdown.
Right on ironikaika, thanks for listening! 🎸💥🙌🏻 subscribe: elg.fun/subscribe

Love Audley's musicality
Right on Uwe Reith, thanks for listening! 🎸💥🙌🏻 as always!
Great interview with an important artist
A huge influence on me...Audley Freed..
Pepper Keenan's credited on Brother. Anyone know anything about that? Always wondered....
Loved those CoL shows at the Brewery! That band did not get the respect they deserved!
Audley you're a legend
Great rock and roll bands Sidewinder and Cry of Love
Its too bad the Black Crowes didn't let him play more on some of their records.....he only would have made them better....
As much as I love the Crowes, Audley was too good for them.
He joined after that 1st one he was on was done, but by then it was pissing contest between brothers so no hope
Well apparently they didn't even think Jimmy Page was good enough to write songs with so, there is that.
@@davidpaul6656 Jimmy Page? Who?
Yes!
Audley needs to start up Cry of Love again!!!
I have worn out both of the Cry of Love CD's. Love Audley Freed.
Right on Joey Edwards, thanks for listening! 🎸💥🙌🏻
One of my desert island records would be Cry of Love Brother
Thanks Alan Williams, Rock on! 🎸🙌🏻🔥🎶
Yes, killer stuff - thanks for listening!
You get the best guys on your show!
Thanks Nick!
Yeah when cry of love came I thought the same thing who is this guy and band they kick ass.
Thank you for listening @jodymills3138! 🎉🔥😇
What a cool cat!
