I miss Alastair Stewart on our TV, professional, articulate, newsreader, with a nice smile at the end. Cruel lonely disease, so very sorry. Lovely wife, as he said he made a good life partner choice! Kind wishes for the future! 🥰
God bless Alistair Stewart , I hope he gets better a little more each day , & to get his lively wife more support & comfort ! They are both really kind & loving people xxxGod bless them both !! Love Helen xxxxxxx
Dear Sally, dear Alistair, thank you for your decision to go public with your burden. It will encourage others to speek up - be it among friends and family, only. A tremendous step to realize for society, to reset to the positive approaches for you two.
What a lovely man, with an immediately recognisable voice. You both have a tough hill to climb but Alastair you've achieved SO much in your life. More importantly, you made a difference - to people everywhere. Oh, and a WONDERFUL presenter too. You always made me smile, and still do. Feel proud fella. You're much loved.
God bless you Alistair, you are a credit to british broadcasting. I lost both my parents to dementia in the space of four months in early 2023, and I know how hard it is for not only the ones who have it, but their families too. ❤
I think it’s so important to speak about Dementia. My husband had Alzheimer’s and died over five years ago. I miss him so much although I have adjusted now to living alone. It’s a very difficult thing looking after your loved one who is deteriorating with dementia. But you have to make the most of it. That’s part of caring for each other.
sorry to hear that, i know what you went through, my nana had it, and its horrid. Not enough research or support sadly. You do have to make the best of it, and laugh. If you don't you will end up crying. A soon as my nana was diagnosed, i googled it, and read up on it, so i knew what battle me and my mam were in for.
I miss seeing him too. I grew up watching Alastair when he was our local newsreader on the regional news. Day By Day . Not forgetting he was eye candy too. Miss you Alastair. You are the best ! X
First I have heard that Mr Stewart has dementia. One of our best Newsreaders of all time. Up their with Sir Trevor. Horrible disease. My wife has dementia & it breaks my heart some days. The more its publicised the better the public deal with it and hopefully the more is raised to find a cure. Very brave of the 2 of you to share something so private. I resent it everyday !
Your devotion to your wife is laudable and a gift! My wife died young, I remain heartbroken but have never felt surer of the deep meaning behind love. God bless you and your family.
Alistair was one of those newsreaders I could listen to all day long. His enthusiasm and pleasant demeanor together with his commitment to his craft was second to none . Bless you both.
Last year I was at the Touring Car Racing, but who stood behind me this genius of a man, I did say hello and thanked him for the years reading the news, a clever guy….
Brave reporting from Alistair and Sally. For those of us who know dementia in a loved one, know that it is a debilitating and cruel disease with a staircase of decline that robs your loved one of every vestige of the person they once were. Hard to have, and hard to see a loved one with it. My very best wishes to Alistair and Sally.
My love to both of them. I grew up hearing him. Thank you 🫶 I’m a retired Intelligence Officer and I can assure you it’s very hard to move on and retire if you’ve done a job you’ve invested so much into. I get it x
Dementia affects mind and body. Alastair a lovely man who I worked with in Students' Union Bristol over half a century ago! He was always very helpful and practical.
Alastair and Sally , wishing you both every support and happiness. My dad was buried Xmas eve 5 years ago 2018 and my mam then aged 86 moved in with me. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s shortly after that and it has been difficult 😌 Mam celebrated her 92 birthday on 3 October. She’s in great form 😊. My son and his wife are expecting their first baby on the 3rd of January 2025 , it’s a boy and they said they are going to call him Alastair 😊, how about that 😅 no family history connected to the name, but I think it’s a good strong name … it’s hard to cope with what life throws at us , a good sense of humour is 😅😅😅😅 goooood and to have patience, life goes on and it’s important to enjoy everything. God bless 🐭🐱
Dear Alastair,Sally and Family Great to see you with your chickens, stay out and stay busy it certainly helps. We’ve all watched and listened intently to you over many years. Stay happy and well.
One of the "Most" recognisable voices on .TV.........grew up with this voice etc...........Sad to see him like this........Take Care Alastair and family. x x x
God bless you Alastair Stewart, you’re a true telly and newsreader in whole of Britain. I watched it was London Tonight which is the ITV London region and ITN known as ITV News. My dad’s mum Cecilia had dementia where me and my dad went to care home in Hackney to see her in October 10 years ago. Wishing both of you of support and happiness.
My heart goes out to Alastair Stewart and his wife; and all those who suffer with Dementia. I am not an expert, but i have heard and seen what is does. Dementia, the slow, sometimes fast, erosion of the brain. The slow loss of self, of bodily function, until there is nothing left, and then death. Dementia is deadly. There but for the grace of higher powers (the spirits, god ) go i, you, everyone. And it's not just the elderly. Younger people can get it, too.
Thanks to Alastair and Sally for sharing their personal experience, and I wish them all the best. I hope a cure or appropriate treatment is found soon.
Absolutely. My mother is very ill but we always have a laugh and joke it helps us both cope and get through the bad times. Laughter is the best medicine 😂
Alistair Stewart is a man I grew up with,on my TV my favourite Newscaster,I feel for them both ,my father had Lewy bodies Dementia and my mother in law has frontal and mixed Alzheimer’s I cared for my father and now care for my mother in law it’s a sense of humour that gets you through the hard at times but is the most critical..well done Alistair and Sally for making this short documentary it spurs us on our journeys.xxxx
Grew up with Alastair's bulletins in the 80's: a concise & authoritative voice he hasn't lost even now. I wish him and Sally all the support & love on the tricky road ahead.
Sally I feel sad for him,he was so articulate, dementia is so cruel.(please God ,we find a cure soon, not just for dementia sufferers but for their loving carers also.)I feel for you,it must be so terrible,❤️watching the person you love disappear.❤️Chrissy
It's a sign I'm getting older: I thought Alastair Stewart was a current broadcaster. I'm 56. I assumed Alastair was still reading the news. He's a powerful presence. He's there in the public conscience.
A real gentleman.professional ,down to earth kind by looks of things .with a equally understanding caring wife. A illness that really does need investments . To bring this to the fore, front of society...imagine we're we would be in this fight now with this fight , if the government stoped investing interests in other country s ,and how much further we would be to finding a cure.....kind regards To both Alister and Sally .keep active ali.
We have a family member who has frontotemporal dementia and supra-nuclear-palsy which is the condition that contributed to the death of Dudley Moore. It is heartbreaking to witness the decline of someone both mentally and physically from dementia and related conditions. We can only hope that progress will continue to be made in finding a cure or ways to make life easier for sufferers and their loved ones. Alastair was always a favourite journalist of mine, and his face and voice on our TV particularly in coverage of big stories is sadly missed. He presented Police, Camera, Action that dealt with road safety issues. In 2006 I was producing and directing a road safety education film for schools in which we did a crash stunt. I contacted the news team and Alastair to see if they would stage a news broadcast about the crash from the ITV news studio to add authenticity to the film and he agreed without hesitation. A gesture that I will always remember and be grateful for. Take care Alastair and Sally.
I have just lost my uncle to this horrible disease, to see him near the end was truly heart breaking, he would lash out aggressively and swear which wasn't like him at all. I pray that they can find a cure for this.
My husband had it with rheumatoid arthritis 60yrs, mouth ulcers, 15years, stroke 2years before the end ..in last 4 years..in that 4 years, he was in bed most of the time, I washed and dressed and shaved and cut his hair, and had to feed him pureed meals and did it all by myself, he was 85 at time of passing, unfortunately we all have to go from something, the body dies..NEVER FOR ONE MOMENT DID I THINK WOE IS ME, yes I became very tired naturally but tried to make his life comfortable, I knew it would happen,,,WHAT DISTRESSES ME is experiments on animals, this is wicked, it's not white coats and test tubes which is what people in their ignorance think when it comes to research....find another way..
Hi Gabrielle, thank you so much for sharing your story. We are sorry to hear about your husband. We will keep going until every person is free from the heartbreak of dementia. We totally understand your concerns about the research. In the UK it is a legal requirement for new drugs to be tested on animals before using human volunteers. At the moment, around a third of our research involves animals, however we strive to replace the use of animals with non-animal alternative, reduce the number of animals used to the minimum consistent with the scientific objectives and refine the way experiments are carried out, to maximise animal welfare. This includes better housing and care, and improvements to procedures in situations where the use of animals is unavoidable. Thank you for the courage to go public it will help so many others. I think you should go out when invited good friends won't mind at all and social connection is good for both of you. All the very best for the future and thank you so much.
How about the if the lord had made sure he didn’t get this awful disease, the lord ain’t doing nothing because guess what he doesn’t exist, we are simply the same as every other animal on this planet we evolved to be what we are plain and simple.
