AFRO PERU: The African Diaspora in Peru

  • The Afro-Peruvian population today numbers up to 3 million people! From the 1500s through to the mid 1800s, the slave trade flourished in Peru.
Have you heard of the 'Secret Slave Tunnels' that run for kilometres under the ground of Peru's former plantations, where enslaved Africans where smuggled in to avoid their masters paying tax? How about San Martin de Porres, the first Afro-descendant Catholic saint in Latin America who was born in Lima? Have you ever visited El Carmen, the famous Afro-Peruvian town where the legendary Ballumbrosio family lives - think of them as the Peruvian folk version of the Jackson Five...except there instead of five, there were 15 siblings! All this and more in this video!

As a Peruvian myself, and afro-descendant as well, I gotta say thanks for your video! I just want to add though, that I´ve never felt discrimination in any sense in my country, but abroad. Some people think that joking is discriminating, but in Peru we are joking like that all the time. Every Peruvian knows that our mixture is our strength, all races reunited have made our culture richer. We are colourful, in every way, no race is stronger nor weaker. It´s just like our food, it´s so tasty, delicious, thanks to the richness of its ingredients, the perfect mix of flavours.

It is wonderful to see the hidden part of Peru that is not well publicized shown in a appreciative light , people in Peru shockingly don't know they are still black Peruvians left, due to intermarriage and new wave of immigrants from other black predominate countries. We are slowly becoming vastly a minority, even with all the contributions to history/arts, it is quietly being pushed to the side to create a Indian/European narrative to Peruvian history .
José Silverio Olaya Balandra was a Afro-Peruvian war hero who was martyred during the Independence of Peru who came from Chorrillos, which many Afro Peruvians lived/hailed from at the time. There is a prominent statue in Plaza mayor that depicts him with Afro-features , but in other forms of media documentaries/history books ( aside from historical texts at the time and at the historian level) they don't mention his Afro roots at all. Which shows the covering up , of the Afro contributions to the country that is now Peru.

The history is far more vast than a lot of people think. Beyond contributions, those people (Afro Peruvians) are descendants of the Aboriginals of Peru. As shown in the book "America Being The Latest and Most Accurate Description of The New World" by John Ogilby 1671 and many other works of the time.

Afro Peruvians need more representation. They need more help and support. Also very true with andean culture being overused. Like there’s more to Peru then the Andean cultures/Incas. Peru is a melting pot of cultures and not just the Andean culture. The Amazonian Peruvian also lack representation and it’s demonstrated by the regions like Loreto being most affected by the coronavirus. Not to mention the Incas never conquered the Amazon as it wasn’t as important to them like the mountains . Not all Peruvians come from the Incas. I applaud your work 👏🏽

In your research, have you seen any proof of Mass Black Migration out of Peru into Ecuador/Bolivia/Colombia?

My US ancestry is from MS and GA. I always knew I had N.A. ancestry. What is shocking is that I have taken several DNA tests and they have all put me in Peru and Mexico.
So, now I'm curious to find out how these people got to GA/MS and why.
Something must have happened to the Afro-Peruvian community to cause them to travel all the way from South America to the United States. From what I can understand this happened around 1840. Do you know of any history in Peru where there was a mass exodus?
Your video was fun and entertaining. Thank you ❤️.
    PS
    I'm AFRICAN-American.

well... I'm afro-mestiza peruvian girl(*mestiza = "mix"ex:europ w/native, asian w/native and europ, etc.) and exactly in 1840, I have not a relevant fact but I have it in 1854 where the President of Peru, Ramon Castilla proclamated the abolishment of slavery since black people had not been free oficially when the Independance of the country(1821) from Spain Monarchy was proclamated. So maybe 1854 could be a date more exactly. Also, after that, the unquiet situation of the country in the social-politics(upsrising for the power, corruption, etc) aspect didn't get over. This could have produced a major fluently the transfer of people from a country to another as inmigrants. Sorry for my bad english. Greetings from Lima city! :)
