The cube is meant to represent society and how badly it treat anyone who is "different". In the MV IU is deaf while Tae is blind in one eye but since they love each other they don't see those flaws. When we see them through the camera's lens it shows how they see each other - beautiful, perfect and the world is full of life and color because they have that love. Even in the darkest moments having that one person by your side can make it bearable. The ending killed me when IU covers his one good eye and her angelic voice along with the storytelling makes this a real masterpiece and I want to see them in a kdrama together.
I must strongly disagree with your analysis that the MV is about how badly society treats people that are different. In fact, there is nothing in the MV the lyrics or in IU letter posted on the EDAM that remotely even suggest this. In fact just the opposite is the case. Your claim totally changes the foundational principle of IU message. From one where the main focus is Love to one where blame is being assigned and hate is the focus. Your claim as begs the question, if the cubes are destroying only those who are different then where is everybody else? And what difference are the cubes looking for, eye color, hair color, earing, speaking, having to use a wheelchair, and artificial limb. And it so where are the wheelchairs and artificial limbs etc of all these people? None are shown anywhere. In IU's letter about the song she talks only about hate and Love. There is bmno mention of a particular kind of hate or of marginalized people. And the reason is clear. IU is speaking to everyone to love eachother. She is not saying we need to love just these people more, for the issues in society as a whole is doing exactly what you are doing and that is dividing people up and pointing fingers at other people. In fact that is IU's definition of hate. IU is not discriminating on love, she is not saying love this group or that group more she is saying love everyone ALL more. Hate ms objective to to destroy the Bond between people and either bring them to the dark side (to borrow a phrase) where hate and loneliness live. In her lyrics IU is looking for the opposite of loneliness (hate) which is love. She also is dedicating this song to her fans. If her fans are interpreting this song like you have, what would they think IU is saying about them? To be honest your interpretation is offensive and makes hate and differences the major subject and reduces the message of Love for all, love is all, love wins all. Note that hate, nor disability nor differences are ever mentioned in the songs lyrics.
@michaelfoley5295 first of all, you need to relax a bit. For one thing, art including music and music videos are always open to interpretation by the individual. In addition, the original post is describing the video based off of the director’s comments. IU is describing the message of the lyrics dedicated to her fans. In the MV, you see the faceless people animating gestures of yelling, jeering etc. and even in the behind the scenes of this video IU herself commented that she hadn’t been jeered so much since her debut stage. You’re welcome to be as outraged as you’d like, however I am offended by your condescending, mean-spirited reply to the innocuous original post…if your looking for hate, perhaps you should look inward and work at kindness.

Hi, I am back. Good reaction, ty. Wow, now that is some MV! So much feels. Great acting from IU and V. Beautifully shot too. Really well done. I think it is a sweet commentary of their parasocial relationship. My interpretation is IU is IU and V is Uaena (her fans). The cubes are trolls/ media. In the MV, she is deaf/mute, he is partially blind - it may seem there is no fathomable way these two can understand each other. However, whether separated by language (she cannot hear/speak) or distance (he cannot see), they communicate about sweet memories (about macron's and taking pictures) and laugh much like inside jokes between IU and her fans or photos at fan meetings. They both have scars of criticism or scandals over the years. At its end the trolls/ media come to consume another artist and fandom and discard it like a pile of clothes and IU is ready to fight but V (the fans) steps in front of her to defend her and their bond, but they are met with a bitter end. A sad reality every artist must face someday. She shields V's good eye to protect him from the inevitable. I think she understands the way it is but is happy to set out on the journey with her fans anyway. I think of her lyric "Will you courageously set with me? Destroy me slowly and chilly, ruiner"; OR this is just about her and her boyfriend, and her asking for some privacy, not sure haha.😭
The director did say viewers can have their own interpretation. The camcorder serves as a filter and allows imagination to roam freely. Everything is imagination through the camcorder. Reality resumes when you see their wounds and tattered clothes. In the end, the two of them are seen ascending to a better place through the camcorder, while they are eradicated in reality. So sad. So beautiful. So brutally real.
I know that the cube represents discrimination and the camera filter allows them to see each other and their surroundings without flaws, but I like looking at the story in the video at a more face-value level. I like the idea of this being a movie compressed into five minutes. I don't know if you noticed it, but there are clothes hanging all around in the forest that they're running through at the beginning. I like the idea of it just being aliens/technology taking over the world and destroying all of the people. These are two of the last survivors, having already struggled and been injured, and they find a camera that allows them to see the world as it might have been. They expand on that, imagining the people, a feast, and a wedding. Taking a few moments to feel love and joy and just live in the moment. Then, the cube shows up and eventually takes them out, but in the end, their love still won. They had that joyous time together before the cube showed up and they were together in the end. He tried to protect her by fighting the cube and she tried to protect him by covering his good eye. The cube might have destroyed their bodies, but it couldn't destroy their spirits or their love. So, love wins all. That's my personal take on it.
Don't get yourself boxed in with everyone's comments either. Watch it a dozen times and form your own conclusion as to what is happening :) They laid a foundation but one story isn't the only story, there is room to interpret the video in the way that you feel.
"Some say that this is an era of great hatred. It certainly doesn't seem like a time when love is prevalent. In an increasingly gray world with palpable hostility and indifference, Sometimes it feels absurd to hope for victory using invisible love as a weapon. However, from what I have experienced first-hand, hate is always alone even when the momentum is good. On the other hand, even though it runs away, breaks apart, and fades away, love stays together forever. Love has a good chance of winning. It contains the stories of those who try to love until the end in a world that hinders love." from IU's letter In recent Korean society, the value of love has been attacked a lot. Negative views, hatred and jealousy toward loved ones, and belittling through the media or Internet communities. People love less and less. People hide in their private spaces and try not to interact. Society is becoming increasingly broken. I think I tried to put those things into the song.
The cube 'Nemo' represents the discrimination towards marginalized people (symbolized in IU being mute and Taehyung being blind in one eye). They stayed together till the end with their love sustained, free from all oppression and pressure from society. LOVE WINS ALL!
A scene that's easy to miss 1. Why do the main characters mockingly throw VHS tapes at film photos? My interpretation is that the new system destroys the old system. Dilemma between conservatives and progressives, or in order for humanity to progress, the new generation must overcome the resistance of the old generation Therefore, the destruction of traditions or practices is inevitable. 2. Audience booing the visually impaired and hearing impaired people singing about love on stage I think it has a similar meaning to the cube. People do not accept differences and individuality. 3. Wedding dress and tuxedo A trite formality that proves the fruits of love The place they went, disappearing like smoke, is a place where there is no need for clichéd formalities. 4. In the last scene, IU’s right hand was strange, so I looked up Korean sign language. Close your right hand slightly and hit your chest 2~3 times = Dangerous 😭😭
IU is not talking...she is deff,... n V...is 1eye blind...they r not perfect...but love dont mind in whatever condition.....they love each other...till the end...they together....I'm crying in my heart ...really ....like can feel...their feeling...their love...😢

My take: I do think the camera they are holding is literally "the view from the cameras": spotless, perfect. Whereas they are actually flawed humans. But the cube (criticism? netizens?) will go for the flawed ones as if they are less human. So they want to live as perfectly as the perfect view but while being flawed and don't be consumed by the media (news, netizens) = the cube. More than the MV, which is beautifully sad, her voice makes me cry. The melody maybe. Her keyboardist (from Palette show) wrote the song. She did the lyrics.

The idea that this MV is about discrimination or people with disabilities, or even really about the Cube is all WRONG. That story line comes from a guy who wrote an explanation about the MV claiming that IU's Company put out a Guide to the video and also used a recorded interview with the director. However, EDAM did not put out a Guide to the video. IU is the Producer of the video so the entire video is based on her story and vision. So what does IU have to say about the song, MV and story? Well IU did post a letter on the company's website and here is what it says " Some say this is an age of great hate. Surely, love may not be everywhere in these days. Hoping triumph from love, which is invisible, as a weapon in this grey world growing colder with vivid hostility and apathy seems ridiculous at times. However, from my experience, hatred is always alone even when it seems to be running the show. On the other hand, love is unrelentingly together though it maybe falling apart, running and fading away. Love has a chance of winning. Then she adds, "I'm telling a story of those who will struggle for love in a world that comes in the way of Love." She concludes with " this album containing 5 songs, there are 2 songs I am dedicating to the people I love, especially my fans, and Love Wins is one of them." No mention of disabilities or discrimination (which IS NOT a synonym for hate). The main focus by far is on Love. The opposite of Love is Hate. She clearly and correctly States that love isn't a physical thing and therefore thinking that love can be used as a weapon against a physical representation of hate "seem ridiculous". But that is not where love makes it stand. It makes it stand by not allowing hate to separate love from those who are fighting to stay together and love eachother to the end. It is that way that Love wins. Hate always will lose in the end. Once it has destroyed everything that can love and is a threat it always turns on itself and destroys itself. Turning this story into one about disabilities is offensive. Because it totally limits, restricts and separates love and makes the story not about love but hate, the exact opposite of what is intended. IU love is inclusive of every human being, regardless of race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability. There are so many holes in the discrimination/disability claim that it doesn't hold up even under a light scrutiny. For starters, if the cubes are only destroying people with disabilities where are all the rest of the people. Andcwherecare the wheelchairs, crutches artificial limbs etc. We see no e of these things among the pile of personal items left behind. If all these people had disabilities we should see evidence of that, we dont. Are we to suppose that the entire city is being destroy because only disabled people live there or are the cubes destroy everyone to be certain that all disabled people are destroyed? That is ridiculous on it face and does means the same as everyone is to be destroyed. But it is obvious that the cubes, which IU's lyrics call the Ruiner which can also be translated as the Destroyer (not Nemo which is another claim that comes out of this same article) and IU and V are the only ones left at least in this area. We also have no idea of how V's eye was injured or how IU lost her earing and ability to speak, which by the way are all disabilities that are relatively easy to hide. How does a cube know if someone can't ear or speak? Maybe the cubes first disable everyone and then have that as a reason to destroy them. I am of course joking. The cube is used to represent a generalized evil/hate, not a specific one one, which in any event is not what discrimination is. Discrimination is about making choices. We all discriminate everyday of our lives. We decide what we wear, who to hang out with, have lunch with, which song to listen to. Each decision is a discriminating decision. But because you choose one thing over another doesn't mean you HATE the other, if simply means you prefer the one you choose. If you avoid doing something or going somewhere or being around a certain person nor group because say you feel uncomfortable so you chose to avoid those things. It doesn't by definition mean you Hate those things, in fact you may wish that you could do those things. I know I have spend a lot of time on discrimination but the number of times I have seem that claim used as an explanation demonstrates that many people seem to be ignorant of what it is and therefore are willing to accept the claim instead of actually thinking it through. While the Director may have given the Cube a pet name, the storyline doesn't use it. Why would you want to personalize and humanize the object of human destruction? You would not. Even in the credits the cube is called the Cube, not Nemo the Cube which is where a name if one offically existed would be shown. The injuries and/or disabilities that IU and V have are rather than issues or targets for hate, which isnt the real focus of the MV, are used to show the love the two have for eachother. This MV is about love winning by not allowing themselves to be Torn apart or give in to hate. And Hate doesn't win. I wish the people who continue to push this false story line would think it through, see the many faults in it and understand how they are demeaning the true message at Love is All, it is not about some or one group or another. That is what hate is.

Then she adds, "I'm telling a story of those who will struggle for love in a world that comes in the way of Love."
She concludes with " this album containing 5 songs, there are 2 songs I am dedicating to the people I love, especially my fans, and Love Wins is one of them."
No mention of disabilities or discrimination (which IS NOT a synonym for hate).
IU is mute and V is blind in right eye
