Is it just me or do you love the sound when Jess moves the plants around? The sound of the leaves rustling is beautiful to me. ❤ Jess you and your family have been a huge inspiration to me to continue my journey in my garden and try new varieties and not worry too much. I love your channel and my dream is to homestead as well!

Last year I had squash bugs badly. We always go visit family for two weeks and that’s when the squash bugs come. I ended up taking a small shop vac and sucking them up. It helped a lot.

Hey, Jess... Try growing Algonquin squash (C. Pepo). It is a Native American variety that is resistant to squash bugs. The vines and leaves are a little "prickly", so you definitely need to wear gloves. Best wishes from Kate in Olympia, WA - 6/18/2019.

I never used to see the point of flowers either. I much preferred ‘useful’ plants, but I’m coming to realise that beauty is really important to me and there are a lot of pretty ones that I quite like. And even if I didn’t care for flowers personally, I enjoy seeing the Bees coming to my Garden for snacks, so the flowers stay! 🌻

Love your channel! I watch every day. Just want to add that Iillies are just about my favorite flower I have always had them. Also, I have always have a cat, now I have 2 that just moved in with us. My cats will eat all kinds of grasses, even my spider plants but I have never seen one even sniff the lillies, and they are everywhere, in my garden, down the drive, in the veggie patch, window boxes, and on the deck both front and back. The last kitty I had, Chloe, she lived to over 18 yrs of age. She didn't die of lily poisoning. So, yes, be careful but don't lose sleep over it. Thanks for the many hours of inspiration and courage you have given me for gardening and for life in general. Your devotionals are some of my favorites.

You could also give your cats a cat corner, where you plant cat grass and cat nip to give them a place to want to be more than in your lilies and you could put a scaredy cat plant in the bed of lilies to deter you beautiful cats 😁

I've grown Lillies for decades with cats. Never had an issue. Never. I wouldn't worry too much. Animals are surprisingly good at avoiding what can harm them. ;-)

    • @simplyraeann3711
      @simplyraeann3711 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I agree. We have "stray" neighboring cats and they have been in the Lilly (aka bulb bed) and never had any issue. I would never put Lillies inside because the inside cats get curious and eat them (which is leads to poisoning). But the outside cats have more to be curious about.

Borage is trying to take over my place. Never planted it. But the bees love it so I love it. Never had squash bugs till the last couple years. Hate them. The plants kept producing but were so ugly. And I ĹOVE summer squash plants. Nobody really likes to eat them fresh, so I pickle it. Delicious. I couldn't grow a cucumber last year to save my life. Never had so many bugs EVER. But I have baby cucumbers fruits growing right now and I will do my best to protect them

Is the fencing that you want to cover strong enough to hang a flat-back planter with something already growing in it until the peas start climbing? You won't chance choking anything out then. Also, why do I cry every single time, at the end of each VLOG, you say "I bless you?" What is with that?! Such a precious thing to do and say. Happy tears!

Thank you for this encouraging update. I live just on the other side of the Arkansas border into Oklahoma, about 2.5 hours from y'all, and have been experiencing the same weather. We were a little later getting our plants in this year but they are looking promising so far. I had to comment once I saw you are growing Lemon Squash. I started growing it about 5 years ago and absolutely love it. The squash bug battle is always tough but like you, I can't bring myself to sacrifice any pollinators to chemicals. I grow mine in a tomato cage which makes it a little easier for me to flick those dudes down into a soapy cup. Keep up the good fight! God bless you and your family.

If you increase your predator population, the squash bugs will stay more in check. Consider hanging some bird feeders near by and some people will add a small pond or two (small being around 2-3 feet diameter usually) and place a few frogs and/or geckos. You’ll need to protect them with some large leafy perennials around the pond. Frogs and geckos love squash bugs and caterpillars and aphids. Birds of course love them as well.

Hi jess! I have had had success cutting out the squash bug worm. Have you tried that? When I see the orange “castings” at base of plant I just take a small knife and snake a small slit in stalk and pull out the worm. Cover the hole with dirt and your squash will keep on going. I was skeptical that the squash would survive but the grown established plants just keep on growing!

I have lilies all over my garden and cats all over my property. In my experience, cats never bother with them and I’ve never even had a scare. I’m actually surprised to hear that people have commented with concern, because honestly, SO MANY plants are poisonous in one way or another.
Also, as for the squash bug issue, I’d recommend trying a companion planting of the three sisters method: corn next to the squash tunnels with beans growing up the corn, then marigolds on the inner portion of the tunnel. I’ve never had squash bugs thanks to that method.

This is my first year ever growing anything from seeds because you gave me the encouragement through your videos to do it. So, with that said, my pepper plants (Bell, Sweet Chocolate, Cubanelle, Banana, cayenne, Jalapeno, Anaheim, and tobasco) all look great and are producing. I'm in NC zone 7B. Now I can't tell you why they are doing well but here's what I did... I am growing them in grow bags with a raised bed soil mixed with compost, worm castings, azomite, and Trifecta+ from MIgardener. I feed them with water soluble organic fertilizer once per week.

I know this might sound counterintuitive because squash don't like to be transplanted, but I start my squash, melons, and cucumbers in the greenhouse. That way they are big and strong going out into the garden in the spring. Be warned though, they get HUGE fast! I recommend using good sized pots so you only have top transplant once. You could also make plant covers out of mesh to keep the seedlings protected until they are strong enough to better ward off squash bugs.

I keep a jar of kosher ( my favorite) pickle juice and toss in any extra pepper, cauliflower, herb and carrot bits and pieces in for refrigerator peppers.

Hey girlie, beautiful garden!! A little tip I've tried personally based on another friends recommendation...(I'm 100% committed to Organic methods too, 7A, Central AZ) started last year, put Organic flour on you squash, it stops the squash beetle and grasshoppers, basically it swells in their mouths and stomachs, so they can't continue on the leaves. It doesn't look so pretty though, and it has to be applied when wet to stick. The downfall I thought about, was not being able to absorb the sunlight, but I did NOT notice a stunting of the plants. And... Chia !!! It flowers chest height with gorgeous little happy bright blue flowers, it makes me snoopy dance 😄🤗 lol ! Much love~ 👍💙

Floored by the Hunger Games quote! And I thought Jeremiah was the geek :) You are very inspiring! I got a (late) garden started because of your videos! Even if I don't get any food out of it, I surely get joy! :)

Such a lovely space. I have always felt that I needed to do edibles. And always enough to can or put up. Never have I planted flowers until this year. I always thought that was a waste. I am so proud of my garden this year with the flowers and edibles. It's pretty and functional. Thank you so much for the inspiration.

Your garden is develloping so beautifull. Would suggest to grow morning-glories allong the trellis as a fast growing plant which doesn't bother other plants too much. And a good benefit is: morning-glory attracts lady-bugs.

I look forward to your garden tours. We recently moved this year (to the mountains) and I haven’t quite figured out how I’ll do gardens. So, until I do, I live vicariously through you 😊🍅🥬🥒🌶🥕🌻🌺🌸💚😍

It has been so hot here in Modesto CA, I have been harvesting tomato’s, cucumbers, strawberries an bush beans. I made a giant bowl of fresh salsa with my tomato’s and peppers, yum. It won’t last long.

Everything looks good! My best cucumbers have been my transplanted ones. I have got over 20 cucumbers and serval almost ready. The ones I direct sowed is slow growing. I been making some cucumber refrigerator salad with some of them. Yes so much rain!

You can also spray your tomatoes and roses with milk to prevent fungus. Even spoild milk.

If you let these radish seeds be, you might find them popping up everywhere for the next three years at least. Our garden is as big as yours, we tilled it and have pigs and chickens on there but the radishes still keep coming. Something to keep in mind. I really like the flowers and the butterflies they attract but never again in my vegetable garden. Love these garden tours!

sooo much wisdom and so many great tips thank you so much! I planted zinnias that were called candy cane, but they do not look anythinng like that, they all seem to be groving on a 70's looking theme, LOL...sorta oranges and yellows and creams and tomato reds, very cool, not what I was expecting, but that makes it neat! note to self, only a FEW plants on the trellis, not one at each square! sigh...they are all choking each other, getting some beans but not growing up like yours are....great learning experience..=)

Try spraying your squash plants with a mixture of peppermint oil in water. It won't kill squash bugs but will deter them. We tried it last year on pumpkins and it really seemed to work.

Hey Jess, the "Suburban Homestead" has a really good looking cage he uses to keep deer out. Something like that may be a suitable choice for your memorial garden. I don't feel he is a gifted gardener, but his esthetic is lovely.

Jess maybe you've covered this in a previous video but I haven't seen it - can you share how you meal prep around your harvests?
I just started my first garden and im hopeful for good harvests but i am used to traditional meal planning around getting everything from a grocery store - exactly what I need in the exact quantity. So I'm a bit daunted about using our garden produce!

Both my Dar & Delicatesse cucumbers have been going off like gangbusters. Fermenting some pickles this afternoon. Also have issues w/ squash bugs on my zucchini- the scallop squash doesn’t seem to care. Planting another zucchini and enjoying the volunteer butternut! So grateful for those plants that thrive!
