I just got a Geofon the other day. I noticed that it has quite a low output and if I crank my preamp I can hear the hum of the Geofon. Is this the same behaviour on your?

Hi - great video - thank you! Could you tell me if the Geofon requires line or mic input to an audio device please? I know that phantom is not required but becasue of the XLR connector I am wondering which option to use for recording.
It uses a mic input without phantom power.
So what sets the Geofon aside from piezo/contact mics, besides that maybe it will pick up low frequency more than the piezo?
I think frequency response and sensitivity would be the biggest difference. I would think that piezos are more sensitive with a wider frequency response. I think that’s why they are often used on acoustic string instruments.

Boom boom boom.
The piezo sensor mainly interprets high frequencies due to the high impedance. It can be solved by hi-z preamplifier. The geophone has low frequencies. I don't know what solution to use for interesting sound. I have interesting results with a piezo pickup and DIY preamplifier, but I'm still trying to find a liking in Geofon.

I hear a lot of distortion for example when plucking the strings. Is this the mic itself?
Not sure what is causing distortion. Confirm your gain level.
@@OllieLoops Just listen to the strings being plucked eg at 5:20.
The distortion is very obvious on the transients.

this mic is cool coz it has an extended capturing range, sounds that ppl can't hear tho, coz below the hearing trash hold. so its cool for capturing inaudible processes n than sonificate it with bringing it up to a human range. but in this video u only shows the sources that is could be captured with standard contact mic

I own also this beautiful microphone. But I have totally no idea why I hear everytime a very high pitch noise when I turn on my geofon...
Hmmm. I would recommend reaching out to LOM for tech support. I’m not sure what would cause that issue.
I'm lucky enough to have a couple of these for making stereo recordings. Should probably stress how difficult they are to buy when they come on sale from the manufacturer as they're a small independent company, make sure you join their mailing list and keep an eye out when they're dropping a batch. They usually go within the hour of being on sale.

Yes, they are handmade in small batches. I recommend getting on their email list. They announce when they have a batch ready for sale ahead of time. That’s probably the only way to get one. Or check the used market. Good luck!

This is true. They are handmade in small batches. That’s the difference between LOM and other manufacturers. Something to keep in mind for anyone wanting one of their products is that it requires patience to get it.
