    So glad someone else sees Big Puzzle as a masterpiece! Definitely a top 5 song for me! I’m thinking of doing an updated tier list with their new album soon

    As a long time FK's fan, started when Stardust We Are was released, this is a great primer! Good job buddy.
    Looking forward to your Marillion video, HUGE fan.

    I wish Daniel Guildenlow was still in the Flower Kings. Love the songs he sang on.

    I'm new to the Flower Kings so it was a great review for me to dive into their discography. I bought the new album By Royal Decree, throughly enjoyed it. Love your passion for prog music!

    The Sum of No Evil is a personal favorite for me as well and I loved it since it came out. I love, love, love "One More Time" - the line "I'll paint from memory your face, my love" is such a great line. Great video!

    Thanks for the ranking. I'll have to go back to The sum of No Evil. Unfold the Future has always been my go to with by far their best epic TTWSYF. Love your passion as always. . Wish I could have seen them live, maybe I will some day.

    Great show, Nathan, really enjoyed that hour. Need to go back and listen to The Sum Of No Evil since I didn't connect with that at all. I got into them around 2000 and though I've always bought their albums, started to lose interest after Unfold The Future. As you say with a lot of double albums, hard to find the time to really get into the seconds discs. I think my number 1 would be Flower Power just because of the first disc which I love. Took my son to see them when he was about 14 (he's now 34) and they played 45 minutes worth of The Garden of Dreams...fantastic it was too.

    Thanks a lot for taking the time to shoot this video, full of enthusiasm and joy (just like the band you review, hehe). I really like the way you express your opinion and feelings.
    I don't want to go back to your personal rating, but just wanna say that I particularly liked some of your arguments. You're right, "Big Puzzle" is such a classic... and "Monsters & Men" is a fabulous epic... I can't agree with you more. Likewise when you say "how incredible Roine Stolt is on guitar", you couldn't be more right. I've always loved the way he can be the equal of both Steve, Howe and Hackett, David Gilmour and Frank Zappa, on the same album (and even on the same song sometimes!) and still infuse his own style. For me, his guitar playing is one of the major ingredients of the band and, as you say so well, one of the reasons why the band must be considered as one of the leaders of our movement. And while I'm on the subject of the underrated elements of the band, I can't help but agree with you on the reception given to *The Sum of No Evil* when it was released, it was really depressing as you said... The album is really excellent and full of nuances, which makes it better and better with each listen (maybe that's why it's much more respected today). I'm like you, I can't wait for the vinyl versions, especially for this one, hehe.
    A word about *Waiting for Miracles* now. You didn't specify in which format and in which condition you listen to the music most of the time. And I think for this one it makes all the difference. It is indeed an album that benefits enormously from being listened to in its vinyl version (unlike the next two, *Islands* and *By Royal Decree* which are much more convincing in their CD versions, in the first place).
    Sorry about the novel, but you inspired me! Keep up the good work, and I look forward to reading/listening to you ;)

      Thanks for the comment! It is great to see that we share some common thoughts about the band and their music!
      I have Waiting for Miracles on vinyl, but must admit I’ve probably listened to it more on the CD version, so I think I need to pull out the vinyl and listen to it more!
      Thanks so much for watching!

    A great review of all The Flower Kings albums. I'm new to the band so went and got the new one 'By Royal Decree' and I like it very much. I've since picked up 'Banks Of Eden' and that is great too. Love their album artwork, especially the one with the Elephant and Oranges, might get that album next. Superb show Nathan 👍🐘🍊

    I'm one of those people who didn't like Sum of No Evil at the time (and the tour was disastrous) but have really come around to that album, really one of their crowning achievements. But Unfold The Future is my favourite.

    I find it interesting that no two TFK fans seem to have the same list of favorite albums. Mine are Paradox Hotel, Retropolis, and Stardust We Are. Honorable mentions are Banks of Eden and Space Revolver. My favorite song is Garden of Dreams, a masterpiece! Additional minor prog masterpieces are Numbers, Stardust We Are, Devil's Playground, I Am the Sun, and Monsters & Men (the last 6 minutes are sublime). The only two albums that I do not enjoy are The Rainmaker and The Sum of No Evil. Overall, TFK is one of my favorite bands behind Rush, Porcupine Tree, and maybe Pink Floyd.

    • @NathanOnShuffle

      It does seem like every TFK fan has a different list of favorites, and I think that is awesome! Even though your list differs from mine, I respect your choices. I think it just speaks to the overall strength of their catalog.

    Love TFK content anytime!! Already had an idea of your TFK ranking from the live streaming with Notes Reviews guy from months ago. I think it is very difficult to rank TFK albums (the albums are good / special in different ways to me) but I think we have the same top 5!!

    Retropolis is my number one and The Road Back Home is my most played song on my server :) It's great we all love the same music but have completely different experiences, that's what makes it so cool.

    Subbed! It's uncanny how nearly identical our ratings are until we get down to the top 5 or so, and our assessments of the albums are similar too. I'm an old 70's prog guy like your dad, and I was ecstatic when I came online in 1999 and discovered that there was a renaissance of prog! And The Flower Kings shot right to the top of my list. How do you like the two Roine Stolt solo albums, "Hydrophonia" and "Wall Street Voodoo"?

    The other day I watched another youtuber (one of the big prog channels) putting Rainmaker at #2. And that's not all. It seems to me that The Flower Kings divides people more than almost any other band, never seen so many wildly different rankings.

    I've always hesitated on pulling the trigger on a FK album purchase. IMHO, I think they are a bit too prolific and don't filter out mediocre songs that should never have made it past a demo stage. I won't subject myself to spinning a CD and going about my household chores and repairs and have to run back and hit the "Next song" button every third song or so. I find myseld, instead, dialing up amazing songs like "A Love Supreme" and "Stardust We Are" while at my desk paying bills or doing household record keeping and organization. I own both of those CDs. I try not to pirate music off YT, but am not above shopping and trying bands and songs out that way before buying. Having started out collecting music when vinyl was the only option, and when vinyl scratched easily from lifting and placing the stylus down to skip over bad songs, I think that habit has lasted into the CD era. I still shy away from buying anything that does not have a long stretch of back-to-back-to-back great songs.
    The Flower Kings have such a bright and sparkly sound, very unlike any other prog band. It is just flat out happy music when most other bands produce such dark stuff as their main course. I realize it was a labor of love on your part, but it still must have taken lot of time to put this album-ranking video together. Thank You1 The Flower Kings are one of the bands that deserve a much bigger listening audience. I think they would have one if they could ever get that initial push into the public spotlight.

    • @NathanOnShuffle
      @NathanOnShuffle  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I’m trying my best to bring a spotlight to this band I love so much! These videos take a lot more time and effort and don’t tend to get as much attention, but I find it worth it to share it even with a small group.

    • @jonvitrano8394
      @jonvitrano8394 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am the exact opposite. I always listen to albums as a whole. Never skip songs.

    • @Yesquire0
      @Yesquire0 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jonvitrano8394 We are actually perfectly in agreement on this, my caveat being don't buy albums containing both good and bad songs. Just buy the ones with all good songs, so you don't ever have to bother with skipping anything.

    • @NathanOnShuffle
      @NathanOnShuffle  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Part of the point of having a TH-cam channel is hoping people will actually watch the videos, ha! But I get that this is a bit over-long for many that don't care for a deeper dive. Here is my list (I updated the description as well):
      15. The Rainmaker (2001)
      14. Retropolis (1996)
      13. Desolation Rose (2013)
      12. Paradox Hotel (2006)
      11. Waiting For Miracles (2019)
      10. Adam and Eve (2004)
      9. Islands (2020)
      8. By Royal Decree (2022)
      7. Back in the World of Adventures (1995)
      6. Flower Power (1999)
      5. Banks of Eden (2012)
      4. Unfold the Future (2002)
      3. Stardust We Are (1997)
      2. Space Revolver (2000)
      1. The Sum of No Evil (2007)
