I went the self-taught route and even worked in FAANG. I want to add more context, but get the degree. Don't make the same mistake I did. I've been rejected countless times for not having one, even for for jobs that require experience like a Senior Software Engineer. If I could go back and start over, I'd get a degree and focus on the cost and quality of education, and that's it. Don't fall for the prestige BS; only pay what you're comfortable with. You can get an accredited degree for a very reasonable price, along with scholarships, grants, and federal loans to ease the financial burden. After 8 years of professional experience, I"am going to get my Master's in Computer Science with a specialization in Computing Systems. Please don't get fooled by people who claim that they don't have a degree when, in fact, what they mean is they don't have a CS degree (or other relevant degree).
