Completely agree. This is also why non-designer executives often are skeptical of the benefits of a DS because sometimes DS teams over engineer it for the needs of the startup
Just like brand guidelines and toolkits, it will always depend on the product or brand's scale, brand book, brand identity guidelines, brand toolkit, brand style guides, and mini style guides.
We don't always have to come up with new solutions and new terms. Not that I disagree with the term, but I feel like the reason it becomes such a force of repulsion is the hidden interest of keeping design systems a thing you have to be a specialist on. We need to do better.
Randomly found this video and I completely agree. Do you have any examples of said desig toolkit? Any figma links? Maybe another video about that? Cheers
I would call it Design System Boilerplate rather Design toolkit, as toolkits are used mostly in the development world. At the end it is still a design system, doesn't matter how small or big it is.
Another great thing about a minimum core set of components is being able to stay on top of variants as you move forward. Accessibility benefits are awesome too.. if you plant the right flags early, you’ll have a foundation where you can have way more control over your own destiny. This level of control is amazing when you’re trying to find product market fit and there’s tons of uncertainty
I'm more talking about how I'm frequently hearing of startups who actively choose to NOT build even a UI Kit because it feels like this big scary thing and all of design twitter is talking about how you don't need a design system. That's silly IMO.
Designers are running out of image and hipster ways to think of design and instead some don’t want to accept that Ai can do all this better than all of us. No one is special anymore so no need to pretend. We all lead as product architects that have to think about the entire spectrum of a product not just a narrow channel like UI kits. LLM’s are here now and the old way of doing things with a slightly re-polished image isn’t going to circumvent that.
I love this video for many reasons. But the fact that there always seem to be a dog napping in the background of the interviews is my favourite. 🐶
literally always 😆
THIS!

ya i think the picture we have in our heads of what a DS looks like is already over engineered 😅
Petition to call it : Design legos!🧩
that perplexity episode really helped me realize that you gotta go slow to go fast. get the boring stuff out of the way initially, then you can go 🏎️
exactly!

Feels like design systems needs to be standardised at least at an atomic and molecular level similar to the accessibility standards currently in use.
DUDE, SERIOUSLY, IT'S TIME TO RETHINK OUR CAREERS... EVERY ASPECT OF IT.
Sometimes I refer to a style guide with my webdesign clients, its a bit less intimidating ;)
Ya especially in web design I think that's way better language

Great content :)
Nice! Glad you like it :)

💯

what is it about designers having sleeping dogs in the background
without fail
