How designers can be successful startup founders - Ben Blumenrose (Dive Club S7 | E9)
Ben Blumenrose (x.com/benblumenrose) was one of the earliest designers at Facebook and has spent the last 12 years as a co-founder and Managing Partner of Designer Fund (www.designerfund.com/). That’s allowed him to invest in many of the design founders that you’ve heard from on this shown (like Jorn from Framer (www.dive.club/deep-dives/jorn-van-dijk) or Colin from Visual Electric (www.dive.club/deep-dives/colin-dunn)).
So the goal of this conversation is to tap into Ben’s perspective as a designer turned investor. This episode creates a blueprint for people interested in designing for startups or maybe even building a company of your own.
Some highlights:
- The story of investing in Framer
- How second-time founders think differently
- Understanding your gaps as a design founder
- What it looks like to truly act as an owner at a startup
- What Ben looks for when investing in design founders
- What types of market opportunities Ben is most excited about
- How Ben transformed customer support in his first month at FB
- The things you should be learning on the job before launching a startup
- + a *lot* more

this talk made me question about one of my design values: always aiming for consistency...and we all know for sure that consistency is important but what about...personality? Like individual personality...were humans after all, we want to get our fingerprints in what we make, we are humans designing for other humans. Definitely this approach will made me reformulate my approach to design.

I relate a lot to working on pre-PMF products. I would've been curious to hear more about his learnings from that phase of his career! They say that success is when skill and preparation meet opportunity; we switched to Figma at our previous company a few weeks after the Covid lockdowns and Sketch never caught up. Zoom also greatly benefited usage-wise but couldn't completely capitalize on the moment. I often wonder how much of success relies on recognizing trends well in advance vs. just being at the right place at the right time. In any case, gave VE a quick spin and it feels *much* more natural than MJ. Excited to see how it evolves!

That's what struck me as well. As a non-coding designer, I haven't come across roles that have asked of me to produce a single line of code so I'm quite curious about the types of companies that open up the spectrum of expectations in such ways!
