I’m baffled as to why you see this as common sense. When did it become common knowledge that low head dams are certified death traps? Sure, abide by the warning signs, but this a terrible engineering design to create something that drowns everyone that accidentally crosses it.

Not alot of people know this. If you get sucked under in a hydrolic don't fight it, dive down as far as you can and you will be spit out down stream. I white water raft and Kayak and this happens common, if you know what to do you can survive, most people panic try and fight it and end up exhausted and end up inhaling water and drown.Let it pull you down and swim with the current not against it. You'll pop up down stream. Amatures need not apply when it comes to water safety. Common sense also plays a role in saving your life. Get out when directed so. What a tragedy prayers for the kids.

My wife and I went on a canoeing trip that rented us a canoe, dropped us off 7 miles up the river, the water was low in the summer so we (walked) the majority of our trip before we knew it, it was dark. We expected to see an exit or highlighted place to get out and never seen any. The canoe rental company closed and went home. We """HEARD""" the splashing of the drop off type dam and jumped out just in time. How can you license a business to rent tubes, canoes, and kayaks to tourists where a simple mistake can take someone's life?

The canoe rental place was not down on the water. The exit from the river/creek was a small 6 - 8ft landing with a trail up through the woods 60 - 75 yards to the rental company. Zero signs on the river bank and a 8ft waterfall drop-off 100 yards past the place to exit. My wife and I were in our 20s at the time so we got lucky. The thing is, is your not familiar with the river (it was on a brochure at the welcome center entering the state). They never mentioned a drop off or that the river was low requiring us to carry the canoe for 4 or 5 of the 7 miles. No honor in those people.

Usually the warning signs are attached to a long steel cable over the river, the signs have stern warnings, they are hard to miss. Part of the problem seems to be people think it's someone else's responsibility to ***decide*** to get off the water, once you can see the dam it's difficult or impossible to get out of the river. The newscast I saw stated they didn’t start up the river till shortly after 7:30pm and rescue is assuming they reached the dam after dark, giving they’re with most or all that can’t swim and with no life jackets, and with the adults they’re unsure if alcohol was involved. I’m on the east coast of NC and it starts getting dark here around 8:15pm, it’s a real shame. The news stated some weren’t locals, but from Virginia, but the locals should have known of the dam and it’s dangers and certainly not to go right at dusk, with non-swimmers, with no life jackets for anyone. Do people even consider the consequences of their actions?

You can see this shit WAY ahead of time. It's gotta suck to realize you're running up on a dam in a fucking tube after dark but people need to learn to do a little research before they just say fuck it and hit the water with no inclination as to where they're going. This is a guess. And only that. …. But the trend is. That dangerous things are becomming more appealing because of social media, because the hunt for likes and admiration from others when you can make some kind of documentation. …. The internet is a wonderful thing, but we the human race are not ready for this yet. The last years sadly show us so. More and more things, malevolent and plain stupidity not to mention hate thrives on the internet. ….. whether or not this is the case in this instance i don’t know. But it is comparable with people stepping close to the edge of a cliff to take the perfect selfie. Only to fall down and kill themself.

Usually there is a sign on the bank, overgrown by foliage that everyone misses. This might be a problem with fallen trees in the river but would give someone who made a mistake a chance to survive.

No where on this video did the reporter or the sheriff say the family went tubing at night or did not have a life jacket ...or couldn't swim. Anyone who is saying such things are being paid.
Plus, no family members are on this video to back up those lies.
Also, if the river had signs posted nearby warning the public about the dam; ... then where are the pictures of the signs? I would like to know how big the sign is and what was actually written on the sign and whether the sign was visible at an appropriate height and placed near where tourist could read it. The reporter said there was "a sign" but didn't seem sure whether that was true.

As a safety precaution to those who have abandoned all good common sense, stretch a high visibility cable from bank to bank, mounted to heavily secured concrete posts, about 20 or 30 feet before all low-head dams as a last resort. Run the cable through those large orange balls that you see on cables over highways to warn low flying aircraft. Suspended a couple of feet above the water, with the ability to maintain this constant height above the water level by a flotation system integrated into or near the anchoring concrete posts on the bank. If it saves 1 life, it is worth it!!!
