You don't increase the speed of the air to play high notes. You increase air compression which will consequently increase the speed of lip vibration.

Why are you mouth breathing Tim. Did you NOT consider that you can use the nose?
Also, "holding " is not tension.

chill dude he is just trying to help, but frankly, mouth breathing is better for brass, it makes less breathing noise and provides better air supply for longer holds, louder notes, high notes, slurs, etc.

@@emilyashton3739 no, mouth breathing is not "better". It disturbs the embouchure. It induces stress response, it doesn't filter and humidify the air (the nose does). The nose is for inhalation and mouth inhalation should only be supplemental when inhalation duration is limited. This is is a rare instance for most music.

Hi Darryl. I'm from the Arnold Jacobs approach on this topic. I use nose breathing sometimes when working on Frink/Caruso but find it's too restrictive when playing actual music. Relaxed breath = relaxed sound. Holding the breath increases tension, even if you're holding for just a short period of time. Heart rate increases, blood pressure increases, etc. That's why I avoid it and teach my students to avoid it too.

@@melbournetrumpetstudio1484 the ONLY time that high inflow is required in music is if the duration available for an inhalation is limited. That is a rare occurrence in most music for trumpet.
The most natural breath is nose inhalation, mouth corners inhalation then should SUPPLEMENT as required IF a high inflow is required.
One does not need to CHOOSE between nose or mouth, the lowest inflow resistance is BOTH. If that is what you are seeking.
In most music there is adequate time for nose inhalation and the breath need not be both large of volume AND short of duration.
Also, I am not suggesting excessively long "holds" of air. The air pressure for the tone must be established by the cessation of the inhalation action. This air pressure is " held" by the tongue for ( Hopefully) a short duration before note release. But that is not necessarily "tension".
